The studio was worried about Pryor's reputation as a cokehead. Cleavon Little was finally cast in the part. Pryor did get a co-screenwriter credit.

The great Sergio Leone wanted Eastwood to reprise his role from 'The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly', but it didn't happen. They got Charles Bronson instead.
