Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film is considered to be quite a sophisticated comedy for its day. Which director successfully mixed this sophistication with witty dialogue and a fabulous wardrobe for Miss Day?

Answer: Michael Gordon

Michael Gordon started out as a film editor in the 1940s before becoming a director of low-budget crime thrillers. Eventually he worked his way up to a loftier status as director of "Cyrano de Bergerac" and the western "Texas Across the River". He must have enjoyed working with Doris because he also directed her in "Move Over, Darling", a remake of the 1940 comedy "My Favorite Wife".
2. How do the Doris Day and Rock Hudson characters, Jan Morrow and Brad Allen, first become acquainted?

Answer: over the phone

Jan and Brad share a phone line, often referred to in the 1950s as a party line. The problem with the party line is that Brad is always using it. It's great fun to watch Doris and Rock battle their way to romance.
3. Which actor, best known for playing the role of Felix Unger in "The Odd Couple" on TV, co-starred as Jan's client and Brad's wise-cracking friend and benefactor?

Answer: Tony Randall

This talented actor frequently played the straight role in comedies. He began his career acting in several 1950s TV series before moving into films. In the early '80s Randall played the role of Sidney Shorr in the TV series "Love, Sidney", a groundbreaking role in which he played a middle-aged gay man who takes in an unwed mother.
4. Doris's character in the film, Jan Morrow, makes a living as what?

Answer: interior decorator

One of the funniest scenes comes at the end of the film when Jan "redecorates" Brad's apartment. It was gaudy, over-the-top, and perfect for Brad and his lifestyle.
5. Which character actress played the role of Jan's perpetually tipsy housekeeper?

Answer: Thelma Ritter

Thelma began acting in theater and on radio. Her first movie role, albeit an uncredited one, was in "Miracle on 34th Street". Her role in that film as a mother who can't find the right toy for her child was a memorable one and launched her film career. Several years later she received an Oscar nomination for her role in the Academy-Award winning film "All About Eve".
6. Which producer had a hard time selling the film to theater managers because they didn't believe that audiences wanted to watch romantic comedies?

Answer: Ross Hunter

The film was produced by Ross Hunter and Martin Melcher, Doris's husband at the time. Hunter had a hard time selling his film to movie theater managers because they mistakenly believed that sophisticated romantic comedies were a thing of the past. Hunter proved them wrong.

When he did manage to get his film shown at a New York theater, audiences loved it. "Pillow Talk" was an instant success!
7. What does Brad Allen do for a living?

Answer: composer

Brad is a successful composer. At one point, after discovering who Jan was with a little help from Jonathan (Brad had never actually seen her before), he decides to impersonate a Texan, accent and all, while trying to keep Jan from finding out who he really is.
8. In which East coast city does the movie take place?

Answer: New York City

Both Jan and Brad live and work in New York City. Jan is a successful interior designer with wealthy clients. Brad is a Broadway composer and uses his connections to find eligible women to romance.
9. When Jonathan finds out about Brad's impersonation of a Texan to deliberately deceive Jan, he decides to send Brad to his cabin to write songs, thus getting him out of the way. Where is the cabin located? (Think New England.)

Answer: Connecticut

While Jonathan thinks Brad is retreating alone to the cabin to write music, Brad actually invites Jan to go with him, which she does. Until then she has no idea that Texas Rex is really Brad the playboy. She discovers the truth when she connects the sheet music on the piano with the same song Brad had been singing to his girlfriends on the phone.
10. At the end of the film, Brad tells his friend Jonathan some good news. What is it?

Answer: He is going to be a father.

As the final credits roll, four pillows appear, two in pink and two in blue, indicating the children that Brad and Jan go on to have.
