Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The film opens with which character walking across muddy fields?

Answer: Elizabeth Bennet

Elizabeth arrives home to hear the news of Mr Bingley's arrival at Netherfield House. Longbourn is portrayed as a chaotic household, always full of too many giggling girls, with only Mr Bennet's study a refuge from the silliness.
2. What happens when Mr Bingley and his party arrive at Sir William Lucas's ball?

Answer: Everyone goes silent and turns to look.

Mr Darcy is suitably forbidding when he first appears and Mr Bingley is all smiles. Sir William Lucas introduces Mrs Bennet and three of her daughters to Mr Bingley and his friend. Mr Bingley dances with Jane but Mr Darcy does not dance at all - he has not the talent of conversing with strangers! In the film, only one of Mr Bingley's sisters is with him - Mr and Mrs Hurst do not appear at all.
3. How does Jane travel to Netherfield?

Answer: On horseback

Mrs Bennet refuses to let her have the carriage, in the hope that it will rain later and Jane be forced to stay the night. She is more than satisfied when Jane catches a cold and Lizzy takes it upon herself to walk to Netherfield to nurse her sister.
4. How many truly accomplished women does Darcy claim to know?

Answer: Half a dozen

When he tells Elizabeth the qualities he considers necessary for a woman to be described as accomplished, she wonders at him knowing any at all. And then she giggles. Keira Knightley giggles a lot in this film. I'm not sure Jane Austen envisaged her that way!
5. When Lizzy visits Charlotte and Mr Collins, they are invited to dine at Rosings Park. How many people are at the table that night?

Answer: 7

Mr and Mrs Collins, Lizzy, Lady Catherine and Anne de Bourgh, Mr Darcy and Colonel Fitzwilliam. In the book, they are accompanied by Charlotte's younger sister, Maria. Lady Catherine organises the seating arrangements to prevent Mr and Mrs Collins sitting by each other, and so allows Darcy to sit beside Lizzy.
6. How does Lizzy receive Darcy's letter of explanation?

Answer: He gives it to her at the Parsonage.

Lizzy seems to be unaware of Mr Darcy when he comes into the room, because her head is so full of all the things he's said to her earlier. The letter is crucial in helping her to overcome her prejudices and see him in a new light.
7. Which Derbyshire stately home portrayed Pemberley in the film?

Answer: Chatsworth

Chatsworth House is in Derbyshire and is the home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire. It is a truly stunning house with beautiful grounds. One of the most interesting features is a beautifully painted trompe l'oeil violin, apparently hanging on the back of a door which deceives everyone the first time they see it.
8. Lizzy's youngest sister, Lydia, is played by a young American actress. Which one?

Answer: Jena Malone

Lydia is only fifteen years old - Jena was 20 when she played the role. However, the film did capture a lot of the silliness of teenage girls much better than previous adaptations. Though it's still hard to see what Wickham ever saw in her.
9. Two great British actresses played Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Mrs Bennet. Who were these legends?

Answer: Judi Dench and Brenda Blethyn

Brenda Blethyn gives a more sympathetic portrayal of the irritating Mrs Bennet than some. We don't see a lot of Judi Dench since Lady Catherine's role is somewhat diminished in the film, although she does appear in one of the most bizarre scenes when she visits Elizabeth, apparently in the middle of the night.

She still comments on the garden, even though she actually sees Lizzy in the parlour. Anyone know why?
10. 'If any young gentlemen should come for Mary or Kitty, send them in. I am quite at leisure.' Who says this, the last line in the British version of the film?

Answer: Mr Bennet

Poor Mr Bennet, left with his two dullest daughters and his irritating wife. Still, things could be worse. One of them could have married Mr Collins.
