John claimed Kyle must be rescued since he was the key to the future, but General Ashdown was adamant that he not go on that mission. John and Kate spoke in one scene, when John informed her he had to go fight Skynet as part of the Resistance. She asked him what to tell the men once they learned he had left. John simply stated he would be back and that was all the team needed to know.

Once, Kyle and Marcus sat down to rest up and Marcus wanted to know what he was eating. Kyle mentioned it was a coyote which had been dead for two days and at least tasted somewhat better than a three day old one. Shortly after this, Kyle and Marcus continued fleeing from nearby enemies.

While John Connor and General Ashdown argued in one scene, Barnes and other officers listened into their conversation. At one point, General Ashdown switched off the communications device so Barnes would be unable to talk to him. Barnes attempted to reach General Ashdown but realized he had lost the connection.

Marcus appeared before Dr. Serena Kogan and expressed how he was conflicted between her wanting to kill John Connor and his starting to respect the man. Dr. Kogan advised Marcus to remember he was programmed to kill John. Marcus removed a wire which programmed him to destroy John and told Dr. Kogan he would help John.

During a battle, Marcus helped John fight off some terminators but then he aimed his gun at Marcus. He threatened to shoot Marcus until he mentioned that he could help him locate Kyle Reese. John accepted Marcus's help to find Kyle even while believing he was still not to be trusted.

At the film's conclusion, John had a voiceover where he gave a speech about how the recent battle against the machines was just one victory of many the Resistance had to win, in order to defeat the terminators. John remarked on Skynet's machine being strong but still capable of being eliminated by the Resistance. He then mentioned the fact everyone was in charge of making their own fate.
