Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the beginning of the film, we found out that Erin got which man acquitted of murder charges?

Answer: James Van Hopper

Erin Bruner, a criminal defense lawyer, was approached by the Archdiocese to represent a pastor of theirs named Father Richard Moore. Father Moore had been accused of being negligent in Emily Rose's death, and was charged with negligent homicide. They discussed how they were impressed with how Erin got James Van Hopper acquitted of murder charges since it appeared like she would have lost Van Hopper's case. Erin agreed to defend Father Moore. Midway through the film, Erin saw on a television set in a bar, that Van Hopper was in the news and was suspected of killing someone else.
2. Erin told which relative of Emily's, that her mother was a school teacher and she grew up with little money?

Answer: Emily's mom

Near the beginning of the film, Erin went to talk to Emily's mother, and they spoke about their lives and the case involving Father Richard Moore. Erin mentioned that her father died when she was a little girl, and her mother was a school teacher so they did not have a whole lot of money. Emily's mom said that Emily's dream was to be a teacher and she was heartbroken that Emily could not live that dream since Emily died.
3. In her closing statement, what did Erin say left no room for possibilities?

Answer: Facts

Erin gave her closing statements after the defense rested, and discussed a lot about the difference between facts and possibilities. She brought up some scenarios, regarding how Emily could have died (either by possession or not taking medication for epilepsy), and mentioned they were all possibilities.

She went on to say that facts leave no room for possibilities and that facts led to verdicts. Erin admitted that the only thing she knew for a fact, was that Father Richard Moore loved Emily with all of his heart.

She told the jury that, in her line of work, she had represented many bad people but Father Moore was not one of them, and that they should not send an innocent man to prison.
4. What was the last name of the judge who presided over Father Moore's trial?

Answer: Brewster

Her last name was not mentioned a whole lot, but there were a few scenes when the judge's last name was stated as "Brewster." Also, her name plaque was visible in several scenes throughout the film. Judge Brewster was stern and upright, but she was also fair.

In some scenes, she got annoyed with some actions that Erin Bruner (defense attorney) and Ethan Thomas (prosecuting attorney) took and warned them to behave. At the end of the movie, the jury found Father Moore guilty and recommended that his sentence be time already served (For the entire trial, Father Moore resided in jail since he did not make bail). Judge Brewster asked if there were any objections, from Ms. Bruner and Mr. Thomas, and neither objected so Brewster entered the judgment into the record.

She turned to Father Moore and told him he was guilty but that he was free to go.
5. At the end of the movie, Father Moore went to Emily's grave. Who was with him?

Answer: Erin Bruner

After the trial concluded and court was adjourned, Father Moore and Erin Bruner went to Emily Rose's grave and paid their respects. They discussed how they both were saddened over her death, but that the jury made the right decision to not impose anymore punishment on Father Moore. Erin asked Father Moore if he would go back to his parish and he told her he would not.

When the credits rolled, we found out that Father Moore went into seclusion and refused to appeal the verdict, saying that his punishment was up to God and not a court.
6. Father Moore urged Erin to let him testify at his trial.

Answer: True

Erin told Father Moore that the Archdiocese did not want him to testify since they felt it would put the church in even more jeopardy. However, Father Moore was adamant about telling Emily's story. Erin told the Arch-Diesis that Father Moore wanted to testify and they told her if she put him on the stand, they would fire her. Finally, Erin told Father Moore he could testify since she felt it would help his case, but this did not please the Arch-Diesis.

However, they did not fire Erin as Father Moore's counsel.
7. Which actor portrayed the prosecuting attorney?

Answer: Campbell Scott

Scott, born in 1961 in New York City, landed the part of Ethan Thomas. Ethan was a prosecuting attorney who filed charges against Father Moore. He first met the defense attorney, Erin Bruner, at a bar and told her he would argue that Moore get the death penalty. Erin asked him why he, as a Catholic, wanted to send a man to Death Row, and Ethan said he represented the people.

He argued that what Emily Rose suffered from was psychosis and epilepsy, not possession, and that it was through Father Moore's negligence that she died.

In the end, Ethan technically won the case when the jury came back with a guilty verdict, but he lost when the jury recommended Moore's punishment be time served, and the judge agreed to that disciplinary action. Scott guest starred on the TV series, "Independent Lens", "L.A. Law", and "Family Ties."
8. Father Moore advised Emily to stop taking the drug Gambutrol.

Answer: True

The case against Father Moore focused heavily on whether Father Moore was negligent in Emily's death since he advised her to stop taking a drug called Gambutrol. Gambutrol was a drug that helped with epilepsy, and Emily's doctor prescribed it to see if it would work.

When Emily went to see Father Moore and told him some unpleasant experiences she had had, Father Moore advised her to stop taking Gambutrol since he believed she was not epileptic, but actually possessed by a demonic spirit. Father Moore believed that the Gambutrol interfered with Emily's possession, and that it did more damage since she was not epileptic. An expert witness for the defense, Dr. Adani, taught both anthropology and medicine at Northwestern University, and discussed Gambutrol while on the stand.

She stated that Gambutrol would have interfered with an exorcism on Emily's body, and that Father Moore was right to tell Emily to stop taking the drug. Gambutrol is not a real drug.
9. What was the name of Emily's best male friend?

Answer: Jason

We learned, in the movie, that Emily was great friends with a man named Jason while she was away at college. Jason noticed that Emily behaved erratically and encountered her in a church one day, and saw that she was really sick. In the church, Emily had leaned down, like she was in a position to go under a limbo bar, and spoke in a scary voice. Jason testified, at Father Moore's trial, as to how Emily looked and behaved in her final days. Erin had Jason testify to persuade the jury that Emily's behavior and appearance was very similar to one who was possessed by a demonic spirit, and not of one who had epilepsy.
10. In Erin's first meeting with the prosecuting attorney, the prosecutor told her he would argue for life imprisonment for Father Moore.

Answer: False

Erin met with Ethan Thomas at a bar, and they discussed the case that involved Father Richard Moore. Erin told Ethan that it seemed a little awkward as to how he, Ethan, was a man who went to church and yet here he was about to prosecute a man of God. Ethan reminded Erin that he was a prosecuting attorney and his job was to represent the people.

This was when Ethan told Erin he would argue that Father Richard Moore get the death penalty. Even though the jury found Father Moore guilty, Ethan was upset that they recommended his sentence be time already served, and that Father Moore would not be punished further.
