Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What actors play the lead characters?

Answer: Ellen Burstyn and Alan Alda

Ellen Burstyn reprised her stage role, and Alan Alda took over the role played by Charles Grodin in the play. In 1975 Burstyn won the Tony Award for Best Actress for her role in "Same Time, Next Year" on Broadway. One of Alda's best known roles is Hawkeye Pierce from the television show "M*A*S*H*".
2. What are the names of the lead characters?

Answer: George and Doris

George is an accountant, and Doris is a housewife. Both of them are married. They meet at a rural seaside inn, wind up in bed and agree to continue to meet every year. The tag line for the movie was "They couldn't have celebrated happier anniversaries if they were married to each other!".
3. Where did George and Doris live at the beginning of the film?

Answer: New Jersey and California

George, an accountant, comes from New Jersey, and later moves to Beverly Hills when his business goes bankrupt. Doris is a housewife who lives in Oakland, California.
4. When Doris goes into labor on one of their weekends, who delivers the baby?

Answer: George

This scene is hilarious because George panics and hyperventilates. In the end, George pulls it together and helps to deliver the baby.
5. Who sings the theme song?

Answer: Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor

"The Last Time I Felt Like This" was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Oscar in 1979, but didn't win either one. It's a lovely song. As the song plays in the background between the scenes, we're shown still photos of the passing years. This is the only song Mathis and Olivor sang together.
6. What are the names of Doris's and George's spouses?

Answer: Harry and Helen

We find out the names of the spouses when they first meet, although George says his wife's name is Phyliss. The next year he admits he lied and says her name is actually Helen. Doris and George tell one good story and one bad story about their spouses every time they meet.
7. When George speaks to Harry on the phone, who does he tell him he is?

Answer: A priest

Harry calls the room and George answers the phone. After telling Harry an endearing story of how much he means to Doris, George tells him he's known her for 20 years and says he is Father O'Hurlehy.
8. What is the song associated with "Same Time, Next Year"?

Answer: The Last Time I Felt Like This

The still black and white photos shown while this song plays are relevant for the years between the scenes. We see pictures of Martin Luther King, Elvis, JFK and Nixon to name a few.

Paul McCartney wrote a song called "Same Time, Next Year", but it was rejected for Marvin Hamlisch's "The Last Time I Felt Like This". This was the only duet Mathis sang with Olivior, who temporarily retired from singing to care for her sick husband.
9. Doris' changes through the years are more profound and obvious than George's. In 1966 what is this change?

Answer: She is a hippie.

Doris comes through the door dressed as a hippie, and George, who is dressed very conservatively, is astounded. We find out Doris decided to go to college at Berkeley, and it has transformed her into a hippie activist. We discover that George's oldest son, Michael, was killed in Vietnam.
10. At the end of the movie, what does George tell Doris?

Answer: He wants to marry her because his wife died.

Doris tells George how Harry has had a heart attack. George tells Doris how his wife has passed away, and that he wants to marry her. If she doesn't marry him, he says he'll marry his wife's friend Connie, so he won't be alone. When Doris says no, George leaves, slamming the door.

He rushes back in a few seconds later to confess that Connie is 87 years old! George tells Doris he'll keep showing up every year until they die.
