Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I wasn't dropping no eaves sir, honest". Where was this famous Samwise quote spoken in "The Fellowship of the Ring"?

Answer: Bag End

After Bilbo left the Shire and entrusted the ring to Frodo, Gandalf went on a journey to find information about Isildur and the ring of power. Upon his return, Frodo and Gandalf figured out that Bilbo's ring was the One Ring of Sauron. During a discussion about the end of the world and other events in the ring's history, a rustling was heard in Frodo's garden. Out came Samwise Gamgee who was "gardening" at the moment and overheard the conversation.

In Bag End, Sam pleaded to Gandalf not to harm him or turn him into anything unnatural since after all, he "wasn't dropping no eaves".
2. In "The Two Towers", after Gollum said, "What's 'taters' precious? What's 'taters', eh?", Sam responded, "PO-TA-TOES!" and then what?

Answer: "Boil em', mash em', stick em' , in a stew."

Gollum has two personalities, Smeagol, who is the good side, and Gollum, which is the side poisoned by the power of Sauron and the One Ring. After Smeagol overpowered Gollum and got rid of the evil side, he found some "conies" or rabbits, which he provided as food to his master, Frodo.

He tried to get Frodo to eat the rabbits raw but his master was only sickened by the thought. Siding with Frodo, Sam pulled out his pot and cooked a stew with them. Wishing he had some potatoes to make his stew taste better, he said this famous food related line.
3. "Your bodyguard?", to which Sam replied, "His gardener." Who asked him this question in "The Two Towers"?

Answer: Faramir

Sam was always protective of his Mr. Frodo so, when threatened, he would bring out his sword without fear. In Faramir's secret hideout behind the waterfall, this question was asked. As protector, Sam would have been seen as a bodyguard, but with the answer of "his gardener", Faramir is meant to believe that gardeners are of high rank in the Shire.

This conversation between the hobbits and Faramir led to a new ally who not only warned Frodo and Sam about the danger that their guide, Gollum, a corrupted creature, was leading them to, but also informed Gandalf and Pippin that Frodo and Sam were still alive later when Faramir went back to Gondor, his home city.
4. Where did Sam say this line in "FOTR"? "I know. And I'm coming with you."

Answer: The river Anduin

At the end of "The Fellowship of the Ring", the Uruk-hai attacked the fellowship in the woods next to the River Anduin. After finding Frodo, Aragorn let him go off on his own as the Uruk-hai approached them. Frodo ran to the river to continue his journey on his own so he could no longer harm any of his friends.

But Sam, knowing what Frodo would do as he was his best friend, went to the River Anduin to join Frodo on his journey. Already in a Lothlorien boat and deep into the river, he told Sam to stop but Sam came into the water despite the fact that he could not swim.

After Sam almost drowned, Frodo left on his journey and Sam came with him.
5. "I think I'm getting the hang of this." "This" is referring to Sam getting the hang of fighting with a dagger in "FOTR".

Answer: False

In Balin's tomb, in the Mines of Moria, the fellowship was attacked by an army of orcs and a cave troll. Gandalf, Aragorn and Boromir were fighting with swords, Legolas with a bow and arrows, Frodo with Sting, and Pippin and Merry with daggers, but Sam was left to fight with a saucepan. Using this pan, he was able to defend himself as well as he could without any real weapon. Sam took out a couple of orcs and with the help of all the other members of the fellowship, the cave troll. All the other enemies were delayed long enough for them to retreat through the eastern door to the second hall, and towards Bridge of Khazad-dum.
6. "If I take one more step, it'll be the farthest away from home I've ever been." When Sam said this line to Frodo in "FOTR", whose crop were they heading into?

Answer: Farmer Maggot

At the beginning of their journey, at the edge of Farmer Maggot's crop, Samwise felt afraid of continuing into the unknown, where he has never been. Reassuring him, Frodo replied, "Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to." And so, the two continued into the crop where they met the first of the additions to the Fellowship, Merry and Pippin, trying to steal carrots and other vegetables.

They ran into each other and all together they ran from Farmer Maggot, fell of a small cliff, got off the road, and met their first enemy from Mordor.
7. In "The Two Towers", Samwise Gamgee said this line to Frodo Baggins: "There's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."

Answer: True

After being captured by Faramir, Frodo and Sam were brought to Osgiliath which was in the middle of an attack. Frodo heard the calling of the Ring and moved away from their hiding spot and towards a Nazgul. Samwise came just in time and stopped Frodo from handing the Ring over to it. With evil inside him, Frodo almost killed Sam for stopping him.

"It's me. It's your Sam. Don't you remember your Sam?" Frodo dropped Sting on the floor realizing who it was. "I can't do this Sam." And thus, Sam began his speech that gave Frodo the will to continue. "I know. It's all wrong. By rights, we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end... because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was... when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing... this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you... that meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories... had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going... because they were holding on to something. ... That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo, and it's worth fighting for."
8. "Thank You M'Lady... Have you run out of those nice shiny daggers?" Who was given the "shiny daggers" that Samwise Gamgee was referring to in "FOTR"?

Answer: Merry and Pippin

At the end of their stay in Lothlorien, the members of the fellowship were given different items from the lady of light, Galadriel. Legolas was given a new bow, Frodo was given the light of Eärendil, Gimli was given three locks of golden hair from Galadriel's golden head, Merry and Pippin were given shiny daggers, and Sam was given real elvish rope.

It wasn't the best gift out of those that were given to the fellowship in his opinion, but the rope showed its usefulness while in Emyn Muil. While climbing down a high edge using the rope tied to a rock with one of Sam's knots, the rope detached with ease proving its elvish qualities.
9. "Come, Mr. Frodo! I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." To what did Samwise refer to as "it"?

Answer: The One Ring

In the final steps of their journey, Frodo and Sam were climbing up Mt. Doom, the fiery pit into which Frodo must cast the One Ring of Power to destroy evil in Middle-Earth. The Ring of Power yearned to return to his master, Sauron, and being in Mordor made the ring heavier than ever as it was trying to make Frodo and Sam give up.

It got Frodo lying on the side of Mt. Doom tired and in pain, unable to walk another foot. With built up strength after traveling so far, Samwise Gamgee carried Frodo up the side of the mountain. On the way they met Gollum, who tried to take away the ring but Sam was the stronger fighter and protected his best friend, allowing Mr. Frodo to get to the edge of the flaming lava into which he had to throw the one thing that he became so attached to.
10. Adding to Frodo's list of things he could now see after destroying the One Ring, Sam said these things: "_________ dancing. She had ribbons in her hair. If ever I was to marry someone... it would have been her." Who did Sam see?

Answer: Rosie Cotton

Surrounded by gallons of lava flowing down its slope, Frodo and Samwise sat on the side of Mt. Doom after destroying the One Ring of Power. Frodo, no longer affected my the burden he was carrying throughout the adventure, was able to see what he had missed since he left home. "I can see the Shire.

The Brandywine River. Bag End. The lights in the Party tree." Contributing to the list, Sam added "Rosie Cotton", wishing that he could marry her. His wish came true after their return to the Shire. Rosie and Samwise had 13 children: Elanor, Frodo, Rose, Merry, Pippin, Goldilocks, Hamfast, Daisy, Primrose, Bilbo, Ruby, Robin, and Tolman.
