Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After arriving at the scene of the first murder, someone told me the crime involved passion. Who played me?

Answer: Morgan Freeman

Freeman, born on June 1st, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, was cast as William Somerset. Somerset arrived at the scene of a crime in which someone had been killed due to domestic violence. A colleague confirmed that whoever committed that murder did so out of passion. Detective Lieutenant Somerset observed how the walls were splattered with blood and facetiously stated there was "passion" on those walls. Somerset asked the other person if a kid witnessed this murder so the person responded by inquiring as to what would cause Somerset to think that.

This person remarked to Detective Lieutenant Somerset what a joy it would be when his days on the force came to an end, alluding to supposed animosity between him and other cops. Nevertheless, he continued inspecting all areas of the apartment looking for clues aiding him in capturing the culprit. Freeman starred in the films "The Shawshank Redemption", "Glory" and "Batman Begins".
2. Somerset offered to take me out for a drink after our first meeting. Who played me?

Answer: Brad Pitt

Pitt, a native of Shawnee, Oklahoma, played David Mills. Mills, also a Detective, met with Somerset at the initial crime scene and informed him he had been assigned to the same case. Having walked out of the building, Somerset told Detective Mills he was heading for a bar and thought he might want to come along. Detective Mills alerted him to the fact that he was new in the area and had little time to work at transitioning into the local law enforcement's protocol there.

As they walked down the street, Somerset asked Mills what caused him to be transferred to his precinct so Mills simply confirmed that he pressed for the transfer himself. Throughout the movie, Mills and Somerset teamed up to resolve the string of murders happening around town. Pitt appeared in the movies "Interview With the Vampire", "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" and "Fight Club".

In 2009, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Leading Role for "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" but lost to Sean Penn for "Milk".

Other Oscar nominees for Best Actor in a Leading Role that year were Frank Langella for "Frost/Nixon", Mickey Rourke for "The Wrestler" and Richard Jenkins for "The Visitor".
3. Lying in bed, I was awakened by a phone call when viewers first saw me. Who played me?

Answer: Gwyneth Paltrow

Paltrow, born in 1972 in Los Angeles, California, portrayed Tracy Mills. Tracy was asleep with David, her husband, in her first scene when she got annoyed at a phone call for him. He mentioned to Tracy that he had to get going for the day so she advised him to fix up his eye since it was crusty. Tracy and David were seen comforting each other throughout the movie, that is, until tragedy struck.

The serial killer targeted Tracy by cutting off her head, killing her. Paltrow had roles in the films "The Talented Mr. Ripley", "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and "The Royal Tenenbaums".

In 1999, she won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film "Shakespeare in Love". Other Oscar nominees for Best Actress in a Leading Role that year were Cate Blanchett for "Elizabeth", Fernanda Montenegro for "Central Station", Meryl Streep for "One True Thing" and Emily Watson for "Hilary and Jackie".
4. I told Detective Lieutenant Somerset his time on the force would come to an end in six days. Who played me?

Answer: R. Lee Ermey

Ermey landed the role of the Police Captain in "Seven". The Captain noticed David Mills getting into an argument with Mark Swarr, John Doe's lawyer (John Doe was the killer), so he told him to ease up. There was an additional scene in which the Captain got annoyed when a phone call distracted him from doing police work. Once, he informed Detective Lieutenant Somerset how he would be taking retirement in six more days. Ermey had guest starring stints on the TV series "Space: Above and Beyond", "Tales from the Crypt" and "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." He has also starred in a number of films, too. Three notable projects he worked on were "Dead Man Walking", "Full Metal Jacket" and "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (2003).
5. I had a fascination with seven deadly sins that most of my victims died based off them. Who played me?

Answer: Kevin Spacey

Spacey, born on July 26th, 1959 in South Orange, New Jersey, was cast as John Doe. Once the police had John Doe in custody, David Mills had an intense conversation with him about the murders he committed, asking him if he all he did was kill innocents. John responded by describing some of his victims, such as an obese man and a lawyer, as persons holding qualities he considered repulsive and therefore undeserving of being classified as "innocent".

He also claimed he killed a promiscuous woman. During another discussion with David, John admitted to wanting to be in police custody while also making David feel guilty about not catching him until his criminal toll reached five victims.

It must be noted that not all of John's victims ended up dead. Spacey starred in the movies "Superman Returns", "A Time to Kill" and "L.A. Confidential".

In 1996, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie "The Usual Suspects". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were James Cromwell for "Babe", Ed Harris for "Apollo 13", Brad Pitt for "Twelve Monkeys" and Tim Roth for "Rob Roy".
6. Midway through the movie, Tracy invited Detective Lieutenant Somerset to have dinner at her apartment with her and David.

Answer: True

David was at work when Tracy phoned him up. He told her it would be best if she not call him there but she actually wanted to talk to William Somerset. After William got done with their conversation, he told David that Tracy had invited him to have dinner at their apartment that evening.
7. What was the name of the woman who David showed some photos to of her dead husband?

Answer: Mrs. Gould

David and William spoke with Mrs. Gould right after her husband was murdered and showed her some pictures of the crime scene. David expressed his condolences to her while requesting she meticulously look at all pictures to let him know if anything looked out of place. Mrs. Gould initially concluded that nothing seemed strange about the photos.

However, she then realized that a painting in one photo was hung upside down.
8. On what day of the week did the Police Captain brief his officers about a man named Theodore Allen?

Answer: Thursday

The movie was told in a series of days and it was on Thursday when the force got a briefing about Theodore Allen. According to the Police Captain, Mr. Allen had a history of major mental illness, which influenced his criminal behavior. Mr. Allen was said to have had a strict religious education while growing up.

Theodore Allen went by the name of Victor and was involved in drugs, armed robbery and assault. He ended up serving a prison sentence for attempted rape of a minor. It was revealed that his attorney was Mr. Gould, who was the Greed murder victim.
9. While in the car, Somerset told Mills that which philosopher wrote about the seven deadly sins?

Answer: St. Thomas Aquinas

William and David were conversing about the case regarding all the serial murders when David mentioned the name of St. Thomas Aquinas. William confirmed with him that St. Thomas Aquinas wrote a book discussing all of the seven deadly sins. Shortly later, William and David got into a shoot out with the killer, John Doe.
10. William Somerset killed John Doe.

Answer: False

William and David took John Doe out to a location where the final showdown in the movie occurred. John taunted David about how he murdered his wife, Tracy, that morning. This enraged David so much that he shot John Doe multiple times. David was immediately arrested for his crime.
