Answer: May 5th, 1942

"One day May the fifth, 1942 in the skies above Melbourne there appeared a plane, bearing these eight tired, hungry girls, still in their ragged field uniforms _ _"
2. When Lt. Joan O'Doul is asked what she would like more then anything else in the world, what does she ask for?

Answer: A tomato

"A tomato. A nice big red cool round juicy tomato." In the next scene she is seen eating three of them while her and the other girls tell their story.
3. What port do the nurses leave from as they board the ship to Honolulu?

Answer: San Francisco

The orders are to sail to Honolulu, but due to the attack on Pearl Harbor they are instructed to join a convoy out in the Pacific instead.
4. One night the Japanese attack the convoy. The ship carrying our nurses rescues many marines and one nurse. What was her name?

Answer: Lt. Olivia D'Arcy

The role of Lt. Olivia D'Arcy was played by Veronica Lake. Everyone predicted she would be nominated for an Academy Award for her performance; however, she was passed over.
5. Celebrating Christmas one last time before reaching Bataan, the nurses and soldiers have a party. What gift does Lt. John Summers give Lt. Janet "Davy" Davidson before the festivities start?

Answer: A bar of soap

With it came a note: "In memory of that first wonderful day together when I was so hot and lathered. -John" He was one of the men rescued after the convoy was attacked. Davy had nursed his wounds, and in the process, they had fallen in love.
6. Olivia emotionally tells a shocked Davy why she became a nurse. What was her reason?

Answer: To kill the Japanese

"I'm going to kill Japs! Every bloodstained one I can get my hands on." She had watched her fiance get killed during Pearl Harbor and vowed revenge. She got her chance in Bataan when she volunteered to treat the wounded Japanese prisoners. However, she could not find it in herself to do it.
7. With the Japanese closing in on the hospital base, everyone is forced to evacuate into the jungle. Davy and her nurses are about to leave when Joan rushes back to get something. As a result, their escorts are shot by the approaching Japanese, leaving the women stranded. What item had Joan insisted on going back for?

Answer: Her black nightgown

Insisting it kept her morale up, Joan had worn it every night and could not see leaving it behind.
8. Trapped by the enemy, the nurses fear for their lives. Before anyone can stop her, Olivia runs out of the building they have hidden inside. Determined to give the others a chance to escape, what does Olivia do?

Answer: Blows herself up with a grenade as she surrenders to the enemy

One of the most shocking scenes from the movie. Her self-sacrifice enables her fellow nurses to get to a jeep and reach the others in the jungle.
9. What did the nurses call themselves after they reached Hospital Kilometer 163.5 in the jungle?

Answer: The Battling Orphans of Bataan

"No father. No mother. No Uncle Sam, as we wondered where the reinforcements were."

In real life, the nurses became known as the 'Angels of Bataan and Corregidor'. After the war, all the US Army and US Navy nurses from this group received (among other things) the Bronze Star of Valor.
10. Mixed in with the drama of war, some of the nurses unexpectedly find love. Who does Joan end up falling for?

Answer: Kansas

Played by Sonny Tufts, he and his character both played on their college football teams. Tufts, however, was unable to join the army due to a injury he received while playing.
11. After reaching a third hospital base, the Japanese attack once more, leaving many people injured or dead. What happens to Davy during the attack?

Answer: Her hands are badly burned.

As the attack rages on, a bomb is dropped on the surgical building in the camp. Davy rushes in to the burning building and finds fellow nurse Rosemary Larson trapped beneath fiery debris. Davy tries to save her, but it is too late. Rosemary is dead and Davy is injured.
12. When fleeing from the harbor at Mariveles in a row boat, Davy and Ling Chee see lights back on the bank. When Ling Chee asks what the lights mean, what does Davy tell him?

Answer: That it is people flashing S.O.S.

By this time the Japanese had taken control of Bataan, forcing the nurses, soldiers and civilians to evacuate. As they all run for their lives, heading for safety in Corregidor, the Japanese attack by air and ground. Many did not make it.
13. When the first batch of nurses are ordered off Corregidor, to be sent to safety in Australia, what does Joan leave behind for the soldiers in her ward?

Answer: A pen, her watch and letters

She gave one man her pen because he did not have one. The watch was a gift to a soldier who she knew liked it. She left the letters for all the boys so they would "have something interesting to read."
14. The nurses want to allow others to leave in their place, but they are not allowed to make such a sacrifice. They accept that they must leave and head for the boat. However, one woman refuses to get in and leave. Which nurse was it?

Answer: Davy

The week before this forced evacuation, Davy and John (with the help of the chaplain) had been married. Afterwards, he and a small group had left on a secret mission and Davy promised to be there waiting when he returned.

When Capt. "Ma" McGregor tells Davy that he and his men were believed to be dead, she loses it. As Ma fights to control Davy, the Japanese strike with another bomb attack. Overcome by everything, she goes into shock, giving the other nurses a chance to force her on the boat.
15. In the end, what finally brings Davy out of her depression?

Answer: A letter

The letter is from John, letting her know he is safe. He includes the deed to his farm house and tells her he will meet her there after the war. Knowing he is alive, she breaks her silence and says his name.
