In the early 1980's when the first script was made, a refrigerator was the planned prop for the time machine. Later Steven Spielberg decided he didn't want kids trapped inside their refrigerators trying to play time travelling games. I'm personally glad he went with the Delorean, it was much cooler than a refrigerator would have been!
