"The Black Cat" (1934) Trivia Quiz

This is a quiz on another of my favorite Karloff/Lugosi matchings. This was one of those rare roles for Lugosi, that being because he got to play the hero. Special thanks to funtrivia player quaxo for suggesting some of the questions!

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This film was the first film that Bela and Boris worked together in starring roles. They had been in another film together, released the same year, but they both only had cameos. What was the name of this film?

Answer: The Gift of Gab

"The Gift of Gab", also released in 1934, had quite a few guest stars. Bela was an apache dancer that was always asking what time it was and Boris was "the phantom".
2. At the beginning, we meet Peter and Joan Allison, travelling from Budapest to Bishigrad. What kind of train were they taking?

Answer: Orient Express

"Mr. and Mrs. Allison. Car 96, compartment F, Orient Express. Budapest, Bishigrad." This is the very first line of the film. It is here we find out that Peter and Joan are on their honeymoon, about to be on the strangest trip of their lives.
3. What was the mistake that occurred that prompted Vitus Werdegast's meeting with the Allisons?

Answer: The train station double booked the compartment

Just like a train station to do something like that -- it's either that or they're at least an hour late. Vitus suggested that he sleep in the hallway, but Peter said that he could share the compartment. So much for the first day of their honeymoon.
4. How long had it been since Vitus Werdegast had seen his wife?

Answer: 18 years

"18 years ago I left a girl, so like your lovely wife to go to war. Kaiser in country, you know. She was my wife." Poor Werdegast. He has a wife and a young daughter and winds up getting drafted in the first World War. He finds out what happens to her later on.
5. So now, they arrive at the train station and take a bus in which Vitus tells the driver to take them to Poelzig's house. It was raining quite heavily outside, and the driver isn't paying much attention. What happens next?

Answer: the bus crashes

That's what happens when you aren't paying attention. The driver was telling them about the first World War and how all of the country was part of the battlefield. "And up here yonder where engineer Poelzig now lives, was the site of Fort Marmaros. He built his home on its very foundation. Marmaros, the greatest graveyard in the world." After this, the bus crashes.

There's one part of this particular scene where you see Bela dozing off. It's very amusing.
6. We now are in Poelzig's house. Hjalmar (Karloff) doesn't look very excited to see Vitus. Mrs. Allison is asleep and Peter is with her-Vitus and Hjalmar go downstairs. We now learn the truth of why Vitus is there in the first place. Do we find out where Mrs. Werdegast is in this scene?

Answer: No

Unfortunately, Peter comes in and interrupts (to the delight of Hjalmar) and their conversation is never finished.
Hjalmar: "Karen? Why, what do you mean?"
Vitus: "I mean you told Karen I have been killed. I found out that much in Budapest. I mean you always wanted her in the days at Salzburg before the war, always from the first time you saw her. I mean that after you saved your own hide and left us all to die in Marmaros, you went to Karen, induced her to go to America with you. I traced the two of you there, and to Spain, then to South America and finally here. Where is she?"
Hjalmar: "Vitus, you are mad."
Nice friendly conversation, isn't it? Peter comes in at this point.
7. In the same scene, we find out what everybody does for a living. What are the three occupations for the guys?

Answer: psychiatrist, architect, writer

Vitus Werdegast is one of Hungary's greatest psychiatrists, Hjalmar Poelzig is one of Austria's greatest architects and Peter Allison is one of America's greatest writers... of unimportant books. Peter is very modest. He writes mysteries. It is at the end of this scene that Vitus sees a black cat -- the only reference to Poe's work in the entire movie.
8. Later, Joan comes in -- very intrigued at the fact the Vitus is afraid of a cat. She is supposed to be asleep. After Peter takes her up to bed, he is very concerned about that incident. Vitus explains to him that the narcotic he gave her can have that effect on people, saying "the victim becomes in a sense mediumistic". Does Peter agree with that idea?

Answer: No

"Sounds like a lot of supernatural baloney to me", he says. Vitus: "Supernatural - perhaps. Baloney - perhaps not. There are many things under the sun." Peter doesn't exactly agree with Vitus' ideas about a black cat being evil, either.
9. After the guys are shown to their rooms, Vitus discovers that his room is next to Mrs. Allison's and suggests that they switch. At what time does Hjalmar come into the room he thinks Vitus is in?

Answer: 2:00 a.m.

Isn't Vitus such a nice guy? He decided that they should switch so Peter can be close to his wife. Unfortunately, Hjalmar was not aware of this and woke Peter up thinking it was Vitus.
Peter: "Next time I go to Niagara Falls!"
I can't say I blame him.
10. In the next scene, Hjalmar agrees to tell Vitus where his wife is. Vitus and Hjalmar go down in the cellar. They come to a glass pillar -- in it is Vitus' wife. How long after the war did she die?

Answer: 2 years

Hjalmar: "She died, two years after the war."
Vitus: "How?"
Hjalmar: "Of pneumonia."
Vitus is not satisfied with that answer, saying that Hjalmar killed her and has a pistol in his hand to do the same to Hjalmar. Then again we see the black cat, and Vitus panics.
11. Next morning, Vitus goes to Mrs. Allison to see if her injury is healing OK. She does not remember the incident the night before, and has to be re-introduced to Hjalmar. When the two guys go downstairs, they play a game with the stipulation that if Vitus wins, Mr. and Mrs. Allison are free to go. What game is this?

Answer: Chess

This part always confused me. Why would you play chess for someone's life? Russian Roulette would make more sense to me. Anyway, Vitus loses the game causing Peter and Joan Allison to be Hjalmar's prisoners. Peter tries to use the phone to call for help, but it was dead -- the same was the case with the car.
12. In the next part of the scene, two gentlemen from the Gendarmery come and ask the details of the accident. (This is my favorite part.) When Peter tells them where he and Joan were going, the one cop gets very exicted, saying it's his hometown. He tells them to go to this town, while the other cop wants them to go to HIS hometown. What two towns were they speaking of?

Answer: Gombos and Pistian

These guys were hilarious. The shorter one, played by Albert Conti, was so obviously Italian it made it funnier. Notice how Bela is trying to keep a straight face. It was a great scene that broke up the tense atmosphere beautifully.
13. In the next scene, Vitus goes to see Joan in her room. He tells her of Hjalmar's plans in a ritual to Satan. Shortly after he leaves the room, who comes in?

Answer: Karen

Karen, Vitus' daughter, comes into Joan's room after her black cat. Joan somehow knew that she was Vitus' daughter and not his wife. Anyway, Hjalmar is listening at the door. He has no intention of letting Vitus reunite with his daughter. As soon as Joan tells Karen that her father is alive, Hjalmar comes into the room and takes her to another room to kill her.
14. The following scene, Hjalmar performs his Satanic ritual. A lady faints and causes a disturbance. Vitus and his servant take Joan and bring her to the way out. She asks where Peter and Karen are -- Vitus is shocked to hear that his daughter is alive. Unfortunately, Vitus discovers her dead body. When Hjalmar comes down to the basement, he and Vitus have a brawl. How does Vitus "punish" Hjalmar for killing his wife and daughter?

Answer: skins him alive

Vitus: "Do you know what I'm going to do to you now? No? Have you ever seen an animal skinned, Hjalmar? That's what I'm going to do to you now -- flail the skin from your body, slowly, bit by bit!" Eeek! Peter comes in to rescue Joan and thinks Vitus is trying to prevent Joan from escaping and shoots him. Vitus then hits the red switch -- "the red switch ignites the dynamite".
15. During the course of the film, how many people die in Hjalmar's house?

Answer: 5

Vitus, Hjalmar, Karen (Vitus' daughter), Thalmal and Hjalmar's servant. We assume that all those that were guests at the ritual left the house, and we don't count the previous victims that are in the glass pillars. I hope that you enjoyed the quiz, I had a lot of fun making it -- this is one of my favorite movies.
