There were Halloween decorations visible in several scenes before they actually entered the woods. The movie itself was released in 1999.

According to the spooky introduction of the film, the footage was found one year after it was shot. There is no mention about how the footage was found (which would have been quite interesting). One may argue that the "footage" is unintelligible at times, but that was never present in the introduction.

Answer: The Wizard of Oz

He asked Heather which witch was bad: east or west. She replied that the "Wicked Witch of the West was the bad one." Mike replied, "We should go east."

This is when the cohesion of the trio really started to fall apart. They encountered the same log-bridge across the creek that they had crossed at the start of the day, despite the fact that they had been following the creek downstream the entire way. They did not find the run-down house until days later, when their number had been decreased by one.

Answer: She stole a trinket belonging to the Blair Witch.

We don't actually see Heather take the trinket, but Josh blasted her for it later. As he did so, he filmed her, all the while telling her what her "motivation" is, like any good director.

Answer: God

Heather pointed the camera to the dead mouse with ants racing towards it and asked melodramatically "What could've killed this dead mouse? Witchcraft?" John replies "How about God?"

Mike was desperately searching for Josh when he was stricken down at the end of the movie. Heather, who was trying to keep up with Mike, eventually came down to the basement to find Mike staring into the corner, at which point she was stricken down and presumably killed. According to the legend of the serial killer, he brought his prey down to the basement in twos and would force one to stare in the corner while he killed the other. According to legend, he could not handle the second child's eyes watching him as he killed the first.
