This is revealed many times, including within a few songs. He was born the same year as the erection of the Berlin Wall, and lived in East Berlin.

His mother's name was Hedwig Schmidt, and he used her name to use her passport and go to America.

The Croatian coat of arms on the passport is clearly seen, along with the word "putovnica" (Croatian as a word for passport). In the deleted scene (only on the DVD!), it has a whole "Croatia 1997" scene where Yitzhak meets Hedwig, and a scene of Yitzhak running around and counting quietly in Croatian.
