Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For what year was "The Crying Game" nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture?

Answer: 1992

The winner for 1992 was Clint Eastwood's "Unforgiven". "The Crying Game" did win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay that year. It was also nominated for Best Director (also won by Eastwood), Best Editing, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actor.
2. Which of these actors played the lead role of Fergus?

Answer: Stephen Rea

Rea received a well deserved Oscar nomination for Best Actor, but there was a lot of competition that year. Denzel Washington was excellent as "Malcom X", and Al Pacino was long overdue for a win, which he received, for "Scent of a Woman".
3. Miranda Richardson was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the villainous Jude.

Answer: False

Miranda Richardson was nominated that year, but it was for her supporting role in "Damage". Marisa Tomei won that year for her hilarious "My Cousin Vinnie" performance. Richardson should have been nominated for Best Actress for this film. (Emma Thompson won for "Howard's End".) In 2003, when the American Film Institute listed its "100 Greatest Heroes and Villains", many people thought Jude should have been on the list.
4. The haunting musical score for "The Crying Game" was composed by Anne Dudley. She later won an Oscar for her score of a comedy that was also Oscar nominated for Best Picture and starred Robert Carlyle. Which film was it?

Answer: The Full Monty

The other films listed were also nominated for Best Picture, but "The Full Monty" was the only one Dudley scored, and the only one with Robert Carlyle. Anne Dudley was an original member of the 1980s UK group, the Art of Noise. (The closest thing to their sound in the United States would be Herbie Hancock.)
5. The versatile British actor who played Col, the bartender at The Metro, went on to win a 2001 Academy Award. For what film did he win it?

Answer: Iris

Jim Broadbent played Col. In 2001's "Iris", he played the husband of philosophical writer Iris Murdock (played by Judi Dench). He has also played the father in "Bridget Jones's Diary", Mr. Boo in "Little Voice", and Harold Zidler, the master showman in "Moulin Rouge!" If you want to see him in a lead role, check out "Topsy-Turvy".
6. Jaye Davidson, who played Dil, appeared in just one more film after "The Crying Game". Which of these films was it?

Answer: Stargate

In this film, Jaye got to turn the tables and play the villain. Jaye's character was actually just a person who happened to be possessed by an evil Sun God, Ra. Jaye did not want to do "Stargate" but must have followed Elizabeth Taylor's "Cleopatra" example and agreed to do it only for $1 million. Having earned an Oscar nomination for a great film debut, Jaye is now back at work in the fashion industry in London.
7. Which of the characters was featured on the movie's posters and newspaper ads?

Answer: Jude

The poster was a black and white shot of Miranda Richardson's character in a "femme fatale" pose holding a revolver. It may have gotten people to the theatre who normally wouldn't have gone to see the film. The tagline read, "Play at your own risk."
8. Who is the talented Irish filmmaker who wrote the screenplay and directed the movie?

Answer: Neil Jordan

The other three directors listed are all from Australia or New Zealand. Jordan made his directorial debut in 1982 with his film "Angel". He cast fellow Irishman Stephen Rea in that film, and the two have worked together on many films since then. As stated previously, Jordan won an Oscar for writing the screenplay as well.
9. Because of the success of "The Crying Game", this director was given the opportunity to helm the high profile screen adaptation of the first book in a series of gothic horror novels by an author with a huge cult following. What was the name of that movie?

Answer: Interview with the Vampire

Anne Rice wrote the novel back in 1976, so the pressure was on seventeen years later when filming began. Like many of her fans, Rice balked at the casting of Tom Cruise as LeStat. However, once the film was completed, she took out a full page ad praising it. "Interview with the Vampire" grossed over $100 million, but it did not overshadow Neil Jordan's prior crowning achievement, "The Crying Game".
10. Which studio released "The Crying Game"?

Answer: Miramax

This was before Miramax was bought by Disney, so TCG actually was an independent film. With a modest budget, it grossed over $62 million. In addition, this unforgettable film put everyone involved on the Hollywood map.

Thanks for playing! Hope you enjoyed these quizzes almost as much as the movie.
