Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song is playing at the beginning of the movie?

Answer: "Don't You (Forget About Me)" by Simple Minds

It's played over the closing credits as well! The song was written for the film and became the band's only US number one hit. It has been covered by artists as varied as Smash Mouth, Billy Idol and New Found Glory.
2. Emilio Estevez, who plays Andy, is the first member of the cast billed in the opening credits - who is the second?

Answer: Paul Gleason

The stars are listed alphabetically! Paul Gleason played Assistant Principal Richard Vernon. He appeared as the same character, in the same library 16 years later in "Not Another Teen Movie!"
3. The film opens with an epigraph that was suggested by Ally Sheedy, who plays Allison. It quotes which iconic celebrity?

Answer: David Bowie

The quote is taken from the song "Changes" and reads:
"...And these children
that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds
are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware
of what they're going through..."

Co-incidentally, Simple Minds took their name from Bowie's "The Jean Genie" - "He's so simple-minded, he can't drive his own module."
4. There is a quote from murderer Barbara Ann Spencer scratched into a wall which inspired a popular song. What is it?

Answer: I Don't Like Mondays

It was the 16-year-old's justification for a shooting spree at Grover Cleveland Elementary School, San Diego. The line was the basis for the song "I Don't Like Mondays" by The Boomtown Rats. Though the song was first performed less than a month after Spencer killed two adults and injured eight children and a police officer, Bob Geldof has stated "It wasn't an attempt to exploit tragedy."
5. We see a noticeboard displaying photos of students who have been Shermer High School's "Man Of The Year". Which of the characters who we meet in the movie has won this prestigious award?

Answer: Carl Reed, the janitor

Satirical! Carl is played by John Kapelos. He took the role over from Rick Moranis, who was playing the character too broadly, and with a Russian accent.

Brian's Father is played by an uncredited John Hughes, who of course wrote and directed the movie.
6. A copy of which best-selling help book can be seen on a guidance counselor's desk?

Answer: Thomas A. Harris' "I'm OK, You're OK"

The book has sold over fifteen million copies to date. David Bowie referenced the book in the song, "Up the Hill Backwards" with the lyric "I'm okay, you're so-so".
7. One of the lockers has a warped door and scorch marks. From information we learn later in the movie, whose locker is this most likely to belong to?

Answer: Brian

We find out a frustrated Brian brought a flare gun to school and it went off in his locker. I wonder if Carl had to clean it up?
8. According to Assistant Principal Richard Vernon, what type of business is ill-advised?

Answer: Monkey business

Vernon comes in hot, laying down the law and intimidating the teens - "My office is right across that hall. Any monkey business is ill-advised." He has no intention of staying in the library to supervise the teens, and later engages in some questionable behaviour of his own!

Molly Ringwald, who played Claire, later engaged in monkey business when she voiced a character in animated series "Code Monkeys". Judd Nelson, who played Bender, worked with an orangutan in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back", but as his character notes, "An orangutan's a member of the great ape family, it's not a monkey."
9. Is Barry Manilow aware that Mr Vernon raids his wardrobe?

Answer: Unknown at this time

When Bender asks the question Mr Vernon does not answer him directly, but states that he will tell him answer to that question next Saturday. We never learn the answer as there is no sequel.

Manilow is a successful singer-songwriter whose hits include "Mandy", "Can't Smile Without You", and "Copacabana (At the Copa)". It is hard to imagine Bender enjoying his music!
10. According to Bender, Alison will not be hungry for lunch if she eats what?

Answer: Her hand

He says this in response to her biting her nails, right before the ten minute mark! Her lunch turns out to be a Pixy Stix and Cap'n Crunch sandwich.
