Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who played the role of Jesus in "The Last Temptation of Christ"?

Answer: Willem Dafoe

Willem Dafoe was offered the role after Aidan Quinn had to decline the role. Scorsese spoke to Robert Deniro about playing Christ, but he declined. James Caviezel portrayed Christ in "The Passion of the Christ". Luca Lionello played Judas in "The Passion of the Christ". Willem Dafoe is a versatile actor who has established his own experimental theater, The Wooster Group.

He has many films to his credit, and he has received two best actor Academy Award nominations, for "Platoon," and "Shadow of the Vampire".
2. At the beginning of the film, Judas visits Jesus in his carpenter shop and becomes very angry with him. Why is he angry?

Answer: Jesus makes crosses for the Romans and won't join the Jewish cause.

Judas is an ardent rebel who fights against the tyranny of Rome. When he visits Jesus in the carpenter shop, he finds him fashioning a cross for a crucifixion (foreshadowing Jesus' own crucifixion), and Judas accuses Jesus of being disloyal to his fellow Jews.
3. Jesus, his disciples and Mary Magdalene attend the wedding at Cana. A man bars their way and objects to Mary's attending the wedding. What does Jesus tell the man?

Answer: That a wedding is like a feast to which everyone is invited.

The man at the door feels that Mary Magdalene is impure and she should not attend a ceremony which celebrates purity. Jesus confronts the man and tells him that a wedding is like a feast and everyone is invited, here drawing a parallel with the Kingdom of Heaven.
4. There is something different about the way the crucifixion is portrayed in "The Last Temptation of Christ"; different from the way the scene is depicted in other religious films. What is it?

Answer: Christ is nude on the cross.

The film shows Christ shouldering a crossbeam called a patibulum as he walks to the crucifixion site. Although there is debate over whether or not the Romans respected Jewish modesty, some scholars believe that crucifixion victims were completely nude when they were fastened to their crosses. Scorsese shows Jesus nude, but discretely nude.

The scene was done under the blazing, Moroccan sun; there were the traditional two thieves crucified there, and none of the disciples were there, only the women.
5. Many things occur during Christ's vision/dream sequence. In one scene, he enounters Apostle Paul preaching in the marketplace. What point does Jesus make to Paul?

Answer: Jesus argues that he is not the Messiah.

Jesus is much older in this scene and he tries to tell Paul and those assembled that he was never crucified and is not the Messiah. Pilate condemned him and God saved him. Paul counters strongly that he would make Jesus over again, raising him from the dead, and that the Jesus' message matters more than who Jesus is. All the people gathered around, listening to Paul, are unhappy and need to believe that Jesus is the Messiah.

He finishes the conversation with Jesus by saying, "I'm glad I met you because now I can forget all about you."
6. Judas was portrayed by what actor, who has appeared in other Scorsese films?

Answer: Harvey Keitel

Harvey Keitel plays the part of Judas, a very revolutionary Judas who views Jesus' mission as a contest against Rome. His relationship with Jesus is very important in the film, because they clash on ideology. In one important scene, Jesus and Judas have a discussion wherein Jesus tells him that he must betray him so that he can be crucified and the salvation plan can take place. Harvey Keitel has been working with Martin Scorsese for a number of years, first appearing in Scorsese's student production, "Who's That Knocking at My Door?"
He played in Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs", and he received a best actor nomination for "Bugsy".
7. What statement is made at the beginning of the film?

Answer: The film is not an exact recreation of Gospel accounts.

In the opening credits, the statement is made that the film is a departure from Biblical portrayals. There is no claim that the portrayal of Christ's life is an exact recreation of Gospel accounts.
8. In what form does Satan appear to Christ, in various parts of the film?

Answer: All of these

All these are the forms that Satan takes in appearing to Christ. He appears as a raging fire and a lion when Christ is being tempted in the wilderness. He also takes the form of a snake in the same scene. Later, when Christ is taken down from the cross, Satan appears as an angelic young girl. She takes Christ on his vision/dream trip to show him what his life as a man could be.
9. The Resurrection is depicted at the conclusion of the film.

Answer: False

The Resurrection is not depicted in the film. At the conclusion of the movie, Jesus expires on the cross and cries that it is consummated.
10. What happens to Lazarus after Jesus resurrects him from the dead?

Answer: He is killed.

Lazarus, played by Tomas Arana, appears in two scenes -- his resurrection by Jesus and the scene where he is murdered. Paul, then Saul, is depicted as a revolutionary. He comes to visit Lazarus, inquires about what life is like after death. Lazarus answers that it is not all that different, whereupon, Paul retrieves a short sword and murders him.
