She was first nominated for her portrayal of Queen Victoria in the title role of "Mrs Brown" in 1997. Her performance as Ursula in "Ladies in Lavender" did not earn her a nomination.

"Dreamgirls" also won the category for the Best Achievement in Sound Mixing. Beyoncé Knowles played the glamorous Deena Jones, but Jennifer Hudson won the award for her portrayal of the plump lead singer Effie White who was relegated to a secondary role by the ambitious Curtis Taylor (Jamie Foxx). Loretta Devine features as a jazz singer. Paula Patton played Claire Kuchever in "Déjà Vu" alongside Denzel Washington.

After five unsuccessful nominations between 1979 and 2001, The Academy made Morricone a special award in 2007 for "his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music."

Alex North who wrote scores for more than 50 films including, "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf" and "Spartacus" and received 15 nominations for Oscars, including one in 1956 for "Unchained Melody" (made famous by The Righteous Brothers and the film "Ghost") was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Oscar in 1986 "In recognition of his brilliant artistry in the creation of memorable music for a host of distinguished motion pictures."
