Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do Mary and Rachel find while cleaning in the attic?

Answer: A plaque saying goodbye to Sr. Constance

The girls find a large plaque with all the sisters' photos and the title 'Farewell to Sr. Constance' and assume she is leaving the order since Mary has always said she is a flawless beauty. Rachel thinks she was trapped into being a nun and her lover has finally found her and they are going away together. Mary seems upset over this statement and wants to finish their cleaning. Later Mary encounters Sr. Constance in the hallway and asks her how she can stop being a nun. St. Constance is surprised and explains that it is not a club you resign from and she is not leaving the order but only going to teach children at a leper colony in the Philippines. Mary is dismayed and says "But what if you get it?" and Sr. Constance says then she will pray for the strength to endure. Mary thinks it unfair for her to be sent there since she is so beautiful but Sr. explains that she asked to go because they need teachers and she is very happy about it.

She sends Mary on her way telling her not to be sad, that God is in His heaven and all is right with the world.

More for Mary to think about.
2. There is a death among the sisters; who is it?

Answer: Sr. Ligori, the math teacher

About four weeks before graduation, we see Mary sitting in the window gazing at the night sky. Rachel joins her and she starts to tell Rachel something but stops and they go to bed. The next morning the girls are upset when Rev. Mother comes to wake them and insist the bell never rang.

They are told of a death among the sisters and that it is Sister Ligori; her heart. She says they may pay their respects after her family has left and to dress and be as quiet as possible. Rachel is appalled and asks, "How can she be so cold?"
3. Which of the girls visits the chapel to pay their respects after the deceased Sister's family leaves?

Answer: Mary

When Mary goes to chapel and sees the family leave, she stops from going into the chapel because Rev. Mother comes back to the coffin. She kneels down, caresses the coffin and chokes out, "Well, Ligori, it's the last race at Pimlico." she breaks down. Mary is very affected by this observation and knows Rev. Mother was being stoic when she made the announcement that morning.
4. At the end of their three years at St. Francis there is a compulsory Red Cross Swim Test. Why don't Mary and Rachel pass the test?

Answer: They skipped all the lessons and never learned to swim.

They had been cutting class for three years. Rachel tries to say they had malaria and couldn't take the test but Mary reminds her that you can only catch malaria in the tropics. The test is with a victim and rescuer. Sr. Clarissa calls out "Victim!" and the first girl goes in, then "Rescuer!" and the second goes in. Rachel is the first and does not jump in right away. Sr. is forced to blow her whistle. Rachel starts to flounder in the water, Mary is beside herself and finally yells, "Help! She can't swim! She's drowning!" Sr. says, "That's the idea, in!" Mary jumps in and immediately starts to go under and gasps that she can't swim either. Sr. Clarissa is forced to jump into the water in full habit to save them. Rev. Mother comes on the scene and says, "How's the water, Sister?"
5. During graduation line up, Charlotte begins to faint again. What does Sr. Constance do?

Answer: Uses smelling salts

Graduation line up is stressful for Charlotte. As she starts to sway, one of the girls says, "Sister, Charlotte is going to faint again." Sr. Constance says, "No she won't," and puts smelling salts under her nose. Charlotte recovers and says she feels much better.
6. What does Reverend Mother say to the girls after their graduation photo is taken?

Answer: "You all look remarkably beautiful."

The girls are all in lovely long, white gowns. Their hair is all in up swept styles, they are carrying bouquets of red flowers and all smiling. After the group photo, Rev. Mother gazes at them and tells them they are all remarkably beautiful.
7. Which two girls decide to join the order?

Answer: Sheila and Mary

Reverend Mother traditionally makes the announcement when the girls are lined up for graduation. Congratulations come from all the other girls except Rachel, who is shocked at hearing Mary's name and keeps saying "No. No."
8. At the train station, who tries to persuade Rachel to not be angry and speak to Mary?

Answer: Reverend Mother

Reverend Mother speaks to Rachel at the train station. She cannot convince her to speak to Mary. Rachel insists she was tricked. Rev. Mother tells her that she should know how strong Mary is and how she could never be persuaded and it was her choice. Rev. Mother would rather have one who chooses than 100 who yield. Rev. Mother tries to dissuade her from doubting Mary's decision but is unsuccessful.
9. Does Rachel finally talk to Mary after graduation?

Answer: Yes

At first Rachel refuses to speak to her but at the train station, she relents and does. Mary says, "Rache! Oh, Rache please!" then they share everything. Rachel asks why Mary didn't tell her and Mary says she tried to a dozen times. She convinces Rachel she made her own mind up and really wants to stay.

She says her uncle was shocked at her decision also. Rachel asks if she can write to her and is assured she is able to write and remain friends.
10. Mary says that someday Rachel may join the order. What does Reverend Mother say in response?

Answer: "If she does, I quit!"

This is the final scene at the train station. Rachel has just waved her final goodbye and boarded the train. As Mary and Rev. Mother walk back to the bus, Mary makes this statement. Rev. Mother answers her with wide eyes and determination. A nice ending to a wonderful, fun story.
