Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of the gypsy fortune teller who passed on the werewolf curse to Larry Talbot, in the the 1941 Universal classic "The Wolf Man"?

Answer: Bela

'Even a man who is pure of heart and says his prayers by night, can become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms, and the autumn moon is bright'. The wolfbane was in bloom, and the autumn moon was shining bright, but Larry Talbot, Gwen, and Jenny had no idea that an outing to see a gypsy fortune teller would lead to death and tragedy in "The Wolf Man". One of the movie's best scenes was when Bela gazed at Jenny's palm and saw a pentagran which marked her as his next victim. Bela found peace at last when Larry killed Jenny's attacker with a cane topped with a silver wolf's head, but Larry was bitten, and his nightmare had just begun. Bela the gypsy was played by the great Bela Lugosi.

His mother, Maleva, was played by Maria Ouspenskayna. Larry Talbot was played by Lon Chaney, Jr. Claude Rains played Larry's father, Lord John Talbot. Gwen was played by Evenlyn Ankers, and Fay Helms was Jenny.
2. A werewolf was among the weekend guests at Tom Newcliffe's country estate, and he planned on bagging the beast--if he lived long enough to figure out which guest it was! Who played houseguest Dr. Christopher Lundgren in the 1974 werewolf film "The Beast Must Die"?

Answer: Peter Cushing

Wealthy businessman and crack hunter Tom Newcliffe knew a werewolf was on the loose, so he invited all the suspects to a weekend houseparty on his estate, which was loaded with state-of-the-art security equipment. As soon as Newcliffe figured out who the werewolf was, he intended to bag the world's most unusual prey--if he lived, that is. Peter Cushing (1913-1994) played guest Dr. Christopher Lundgren. Cushing, due to his successful twenty-year association with Hammer Films, was one of the "Kings of Horror".

His first Hammer film was "The Curse of Frankenstein" (1957). Some of his other films appearances were in the 1958 film "Dracula" (as Dr. Van Helsing), "The Hound of the Baskervilles" (1959), "The Evil of Frankenstein" (1964), and "The Gorgon" (1964).

The cast of "The Beast Must Die" included Calvin Lockhart, Marlene Clark, Charles Gray, Claran Madden, Tom Chadbon, and Michael Gambon.
3. In what 1981 werewolf movie did television news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) get mixed up with a colony of werewolves?

Answer: The Howling

Karen White had been traumatized by an encounter of the close-up kind with a serial killer, so her psychiatrist, the charming Dr. Waggner, sent to her recoup at his retreat called The Colony. Poor Karen's restful stay turned into a living nightmare when she found out the village was a haven for werewolves, and the doctor was the leader of the pack in "The Howling". Dee Wallace played Karen White. R. William Neil was her husband, Christopher Stone. Patrick Macnee played head werewolf honcho Dr. George Waggner, and Dennis Dugan was Chris.

Other cast members included film veterans Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine, and Slim Pickens. "The Howling" was directed by Joe Dante and based on the novel by Gary Brandner.
4. A pack of evil wolf-beasts were hiding out in the urban sprawl and preying on the homeless in thriller "Wolfen" (1981). Who played Dewey Wilson, the New York City cop determined to battle the beasts?

Answer: Albert Finney

What better place for wolf-beasts to set up residence than in the urban jungle of New York City, where there was a smorgasbord of homeless for them to prey on? Albert Finney played Dewey Wilson, the police inspector who ran into more than he bargained for when he began investigating a bizarre series of murders.

The cast of "Wolfen" also included Diane Verona, Edward James Olmos, Gregory Hines, and Tom Noonan.
5. A bad moon was on the rise when two young Americans, David Kessler and Jack Goodman, left the Slaughtered Lamb pub and headed across the English moors in "An American Werewolf In London" (1981). Who played David Kessler, the survivor of the werewolf attack on the moors?

Answer: David Naughton

David Kessler and Jack Goodman were attacked out on the moors by a werewolf. David survived the attack, but Jack was killed. David woke up in a London hospital and soon was being haunted by his dead, limbo-bound friend, Jack, warning him of the consequences of the next full moon. Was David losing his mind, or was he really in danger of becoming "An American Werewolf In London"? The cast included David Naughton as David Kessler, Jenny Agutter as Nurse Alex Price, Griffin Dunne as Jack Goodman, and John Woodvine as Dr. Hirsch. John Landis directed and wrote the screenplay for "An American Werewolf In London". Actor David Naughton's other film appearances include "Separate Ways" (1981), "Steel and Lace" (1991), and "Amityville: A New Generation" (1993).
6. Stephen King wrote the screenplay for what 1985 scary movie, which starred Corey Haim as Marty Coslaw, a wheelchair-bound boy being stalked by a werewolf, and Gary Busey as his Uncle Red?

Answer: Silver Bullet

A cane topped with a silver wolf's head was certainly a more elegant means of dispatching a werewolf (as seen in the 1941 film "The Wolf Man") but modern tastes seem to favor the convenience of a silver bullet, fired from a handgun or rifle, hence the name "Silver Bullet". Marty knew that a werewolf was on the prowl in Tanker's Mill, because he had barely escaped the beast by firing a sky rocket into its eye. Now the werewolf was out for revenge. Unless he could make his sister, Jane, and his Uncle Red believe that werewolves really did exist, Marty was doomed in "Silver Bullet". Mary Coslaw was Corey Haim, Jane was Megan Fallows, Gary Busey was Uncle Red, and Everett McGill was Rev. Lowe.
7. What 1987 film united all the classic monsters: Dracula, the Gillman, Frankenstein's Monster, the Mummy, and (last but never least) the Wolf Man in a plot to take over the world?

Answer: The Monster Squad

Dracula was back and ready to rule the world, so he called together all his friends, Gillman, Mummy, Frankenstein's Monster, and the Wolf Man, to help him out in "The Monster Squad". The only ones who knew what Dracula and company were up to were a group of monster movie loving kids who called themselves the Monster Squad, but was anybody going to believe them before it was too late? The cast of "The Monster Squad" included Duncan Regehr as Dracula, Tom Noonan as Frankenstein's Monster, Tom Woodruff, Jr. as the Gillman, Michael Reid MacKay as the Mummy, Jack Gwillim as Van Helsing, and Carl Thibault as the Wolf Man.

The werewolf makeup and special effects had certainly come a long way since Jack Pierce hand-glued yak fur onto Lon Chaney, Jr. in the 1941 film "The Wolf Man", but perhaps the audience felt such sympathy for Larry Talbot's wolf character, because they could see still see the man inside the beast.
8. Since the night that publisher Will Randall was bitten by a wolf, his energy level and confidence had soared, but the beast within was taking him over in "Wolf" (1994). Who played Will Randall?

Answer: Jack Nicholson

Over-the-hill publisher, Will Randall, had been strangely energized lately and ready to battle to save his career from his younger rival, Stewart Swinton. Will did not link his new found energy and aggression to the night he was bitten by a wolf, but the beast had begun to take him over. Would beautiful Laura Alden live to regret her friendship with the "Wolf"? The cast of "Wolf" included Jack Nicholson as Will Randall, Michelle Pfeiffer as Laura Alden, James Spader as Stewart Swinton, Kate Nelligan as Charlotte Randall, and Christopher Plummer as Raymond Alden. Three time Best Actor Oscar winner Jack Nicholson is noted for playing unusual and eccentric characters in such films as "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), "The Shining" (1980), "The Witches of Eastwick" (1987), and "As Good As It Gets" (1997), so his successful portrayal of Will Randall came as no surprise to his fans.
9. Who controlled the werewolf, Velkan Valerious, in the 2004 special effects extravaganza "Van Helsing" which starred Hugh Jackman as monster hunter Gabriel Van Helsing?

Answer: Count Dracula

Gabriel Van Helsing, fresh from doing battle with a gigantic Mr. Hyde on top of Notre Dame, was sent to Transylvania to help out Velkan and Anna Valerious, the last of a family sworn never to enter heaven as long as Count Dracula lived. Van Helsing arrived at the village with Carl, his monk sidekick, to find that Velkan was a werewolf under Dracula's control, and Dracula had hatched a plot with Igor, the late Dr. Frannkenstein's lab assistant, to use lightning and the Frankenstein Monster, to give life to hundreds of years' worth of offspring belonging to Dracula and his brides.

The link between Dracula and wolves is by no means new. Dracula actually transformed into a wolf in "Dracula" (1931), and "Evil" turned into a wolf in "Fright Night" (1984).

In "Van Helsing", although Dracula did not transform into a werewolf, he controlled the beasts and also had the only cure stashed in his hidden castle. The cast of "Van Helsing" included Hugh Jackman as Van Helsing, Kate Beckinsale as vampire hunter Anna Valerious, Richard Roxburgh as Dracula, David Wienham as Carl, Shuler Hensey as Frankenstein's Monster, Kevin J. O'Connor as Igor, Will Kemp as Velkan, and Robbie Coltrane as Mr. Hyde.
10. Ellie (Christina Ricci) had watched after her teenage brother Jimmy since their parents' death, but could she save them both from the curse of the werewolf in what 2005 Wes Craven film?

Answer: Cursed

A young woman over-turned her car, after a beast ran out of front of her, on a full moon night, while driving on a lonely stretch of Mulholland Drive. This was not long after a gypsy fortune teller saw a pentagram in her palm. Ellie and Jimmy stopped to help her and the beast returned, killed the woman, and mauled them.

They had both been changing since the incident and realized the beast which attacked them was a werewolf. To save themselves they must find who the werewolf was and kill it before the next full moon in "Cursed". Christina Ricci was Ellie, Jimmy was Jessie Eisenberg, Portia de Rossi was Zela the fortune teller, and Joshua Jackson waa Jake. Thank you for taking my quiz, and remember, werewolves don't really exist...or do they?
