Pinocchio is led astray by Honest John and winds up being sold to Stromboli, an Italian man who travels the world, performing puppet shows. Having a string-less wooden puppet proves to be a big hit, so Stromboli locks Pinocchio up in a cage, so that Pinocchio can't leave.

The Blue Fairy comes to visit Pinocchio while Pinocchio is locked in the cage. She asks him "why didn't you go to school?" and he lies, five times, although the fourth time, it is hardly noticeable that his nose grows. The Blue Fairy then tells him that "a lie keeps growing and growing until it's as plain as the nose on your face", and soon lets him out.
