Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are two army soldiers and entertainers who go into show business together following the war. They each find the love of their life and help their old commanding officer in the process. What wintry film is this?

Answer: White Christmas (1954)

In "White Christmas", Bing Crosby (1903-77) reprised the song of the same name from the 1942 film for which it was originally written, "Holiday Inn". But he did not play the same character.

In this film, Crosby is Army Captain (and Broadway performer) Bob Wallace who is joined by Danny Kaye (1911-87) playing a Private First Class Phil Davis, who has some musical talent and who hopes to become an entertainer after the war. Together, they sing "White Christmas" to the troops on Christmas Eve. Just as they finish singing, however, there is an attack, and PFC Davis saves Capt. Wallace's life.

Feeling some indebtedness, Wallace agrees to work together with Davis when the war is over, and they become a successful working duo in the music industry, performing and producing. Soon enough, another army buddy writes them about his sisters (played by Rosemary Clooney and Vera Ellen) and their performing act, so they go and seek them out. Relationships with the girls inevitably form, and the story takes some twists and turns, but so do some misunderstandings. In the end, as these things often do in musicals, it all works out.

Oh, the commanding officer mentioned in the question? He owns the hotel that the girls were scheduled to perform at, that happened to be having a tough season due to the lack of snow.
2. A months-long training voyage on a brigantine provides a rigorous experience for the young men learning from the experienced skipper, but their mettle is truly tested when they encounter a sudden storm. Starring Jeff Bridges as the skipper, which disaster movie is this?

Answer: White Squall (1996)

Based on Charles Gieg Jr. and Felix Sutton's 1962 book "The Last Voyage of the Albatross", "White Squall" tells a coming of age story with a twist.

Jeff Bridges (b. 1949) plays the hardnosed skipper of the training sailing ship that takes on a crew of young men as part of a months-long school trip to sail around half the globe. The boys don't all come from a great background, and there are many opportunities for character development before the events of the movie title. In the aftermath of the squall, four people die, including two students, the cook, and the skipper's wife. The skipper is put on trial, but after their training and their growth, the students all show their support for him.
3. Two friends get high and decide to go and get burgers. Misadventures ensue. What is the name of this stoner flick?

Answer: Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004)

"Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle" stars John Cho and Kal Penn as the respective eponymous characters. The film was followed up with a sequel in 2008 ("Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay") and 2011 ("A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas").

In the 2004 film, Harold is a cubicle worker at an investment bank that gets stuck with his coworkers' workload on the weekend, while his friend Kumar comes from a family of doctors (father and older brother) and is trying to find his own path. The pair get together and get high on marijuana, resulting in the inevitable arrival of the munchies. After seeing an ad for White Castle, they make a dogged attempt to find a White Castle while also trying to score more marijuana. Many problems arise, including run-ins with the police, an unlikely surgery, vehicles being stolen, and sexual propositioning. If you haven't seen it, it's a fun ride.
4. Billy Hoyle is an unlikely hustler who finds a rival in street-wise Syd Deane. Can they trust each other enough to work together? What sporting movie is this?

Answer: White Men Can't Jump (1992)

"White Men Can't Jump" stars Woody Harrelson (Billy Hoyle) and Wesley Snipes (Syd Deane) as two streetball hustlers who develop a rivalry and (kind of at the same time) a working relationship, built out of respect for each other's skills. Billy always manages to draw in his opponents by letting them assume he, as a white boy, doesn't have the requisite skills to be a real basketball player.

For their training, the producers hired Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks legend Bob Lanier. Lanier stated that the two actors garnered enough skill to reach the level of Division III college basketball. He also said that Woody Harrelson was the better player between the two.
5. When a woman is found murdered, a social services investigator takes on the task of trying to learn her true identity, only to find herself sucked into the mystery woman's life a little too closely. With Olivia Thirlby in the starring role, what is the name of this thriller?

Answer: White Orchid (2018)

"White Orchid" attempts to bring back the feel of the film noirs of old, and even has Humphrey Bogart's son Stephen as one of the executive producers.

Olivia Thirlby plays Claire a somewhat shy investigator for social services, brought in to the small town of Morro Bay to help solve the murder of a woman who has been decapitated, had her hands cut off and left on a beach. The woman was an outsider to the town, but known to the residents as the exotic and mysterious "Jessica". Claire must determine her real identity, and in the process begins to become obsessed with her, remaking herself into a more seductive woman, trying on Jessica's clothes, and experimenting sexually.
6. After losing his wife to drowning, Johnathan Rivers becomes obsessed with messages from the beyond, heard through electronic voice phenomena (EVP). What supernatural horror flick is this?

Answer: White Noise (2005)

Michael Keaton plays the role of Jonathan Rivers in "White Noise", a horror movie that explores a bit of what is on 'the other side', and it isn't pleasant.

Rivers is approached by Raymond Price (Ian McNeice), who brings him messages that he has recorded of Rivers' dead wife Anna, which he heard while searching for EVP of his own dead son. This revelation of life after death pushes Rivers to become obsessed with EVP and trying to contact Anna. But experimentation with EVP draws the attention of demons, and that's never good.
7. In this updated version of the classic fairy tale, Charlize Theron plays an evil queen who wishes to kill the beautiful, young girl who is prophesied to destroy her.

Answer: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

In addition to Charlize Theron's deliciously evil Queen Ravenna, the cast of "Snow White and the Huntsman" included Kristen Stewart and Chris Hemsworth in the title roles.

As with all "Snow White" adaptations, the story is based on the original Brothers Grimm telling from the 1800s. This 2012 version takes the basics of the story and expands them to include an invading army and a more well-developed legacy of the queen's evil magic. And, of course, there is a lot more fighting action, including from Snow White herself.
8. In an effort to stop a serial kidnapper, two black FBI agents (and brothers) go undercover as rich, white socialites at a fashion event in the Hamptons. What is the name of this comedic cop film?

Answer: White Chicks (2004)

"White Chicks" was a full-on family production with three Wayans brothers involved - Shawn, Marlon and Keenan Ivory. All three brothers came up with the story, contributed to the screenplay and were among the producers. The only areas where they had different roles were the acting (only Shawn and Marlon) and directing (only Keenan Ivory).

The film verges on the completely ridiculous with Shawn and Marlon Wayans dressing in drag and whiteface and actually (in the movie) being mistaken as women. But that's just the first of the comedy of errors when the real sisters that the FBI agents are impersonating show up.
9. A wealthy plantation owner wants to break up a young engaged couple and have the woman for his own. To do this, he employs the skills of an evil voodoo master, played by Bela Lugosi. What early horror film is this?

Answer: White Zombie (1932)

"White Zombie" was based on a 1929 travelogue written by William Seabrook titled "The Magic Island", referring to the island of Haiti. His fascination with the occult (and specifically Haitian Vodou) led to a similar fascination through film and audiences for the same.

In the movie, Bela Lugosi plays the role of 'Murder' Legendre, a voodoo master who controls a group of zombies. And while voodoo and zombies are the means of the storyline, the true root of the evil in the story comes down to one man's lust and desire for what is not his.
10. 'Gator' McClusky is an ex-con who goes undercover for a federal agency to infiltrate a moonshining operation and expose the corrupt sheriff involved. Full of car chases and action, which film is this?

Answer: White Lightning (1973)

Burt Reynolds plays the role of Bobby 'Gator' McClusky, a man in an Arkansas jail for running moonshine. Ned Beatty fills the part of the corrupt Sheriff J.C. Connors.

While in jail, Gator learns that his brother has been murdered, and that Sheriff Connors is responsible. Given an opportunity, Gator agrees to go undercover in the same type of enterprise that got him put away in the first place - running moonshine - in order to get evidence on Sheriff Connors (and earn an early parole). Unfortunately, the plan goes awry when Connors learns that Gator is working for the Feds.
