Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carl Lee Hailey accidentally shot me and this resulted in my leg being amputated. Who played me?

Answer: Chris Cooper

Cooper, born on July 9th, 1951 in Kansas City, Missouri, was cast as Dwayne Looney. Dwayne was the Deputy Sheriff in the county where the film took place and was a victim in a major scene in the movie. Carl Lee Hailey, in a moment of rage, took a gun and shot dead the two men accused of raping his daughter, Tonya. During the shootout, he accidentally shot Deputy Sheriff Looney and this caused his leg to be amputated.

In a later scene, Deputy Looney testified at Carl Lee's trial for murdering the two men and stated how he held no ill will towards Carl Lee for what happened.

He also stated how he had a daughter and likely would have done the same thing had he been in Carl Lee's shoes. Cooper starred in the movies "The Bourne Identity", "American Beauty" and "October Sky".

In 2003, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the movie "Adaptation". Other Oscar nominees for Best Supporting Actor that year were Christopher Walken for "Catch Me If You Can", John C. Reilly for "Chicago", Ed Harris for "The Hours" and Paul Newman for "Road to Perdition".
2. I represented Carl Lee Hailey at his murder trial. Who played me?

Answer: Matthew McConaughey

McConaughey, a native of Uvalde, Texas, portrayed Jake Brigance. Jake was a lawyer and had not practiced law for many years but this did not deter him from formulating a strong game plan to get Carl Lee Hailey acquitted. When Carl Lee provided payment to Jake for his services, Jake informed him that he needed more money as he had to live but Carl Lee stated that was all he had to give him.

Despite this, Jake continued to work on Carl Lee's case with the aid of two other lawyers, Harry Rex Vonner and Lucien Wilbanks. Jake asked the judge to change the venue of the trial, as it was in Mississippi and he felt Carl Lee would be unable to get a fair trial there.

The judge denied his motion and the proceedings took place in Mississippi. In a pivotal moment, Jake gave an impassioned closing argument when he asked the jury to picture in their minds what happened to Carl Lee's daughter and imagine how the community would respond had she been white. McConaughey had roles in the films, "Contact", "Sahara" and "Failure to Launch".
3. I was a law student who helped out Jake with his trial. Who played me?

Answer: Sandra Bullock

Bullock, born in 1964 in Arlington, Virginia, played Ellen Roark. Ellen was a law student who was present the day when Carl Lee Hailey shot Freddie Lee Cobb and Pete Willard, the two men about to go on trial for raping his daughter. Near the beginning of the movie, she went to court one day and assisted Jake so he asked her to continue providing aid to him throughout the trial. Ellen and Jake struck up a nice bond and Jake was impressed with how knowledgeable she was in the legal field. Midway through the movie, Jake was injured during a riot between members of the Ku Klux Klan and the community where the trial was held and Ellen tended to his wound. Near the end of the film, Ellen was stopped for speeding and the officer asked her to step out of the car. Once she did, he and a Ku Klux Klan member attacked Ellen and kidnapped her to the site where they held their meetings.

The very next day, Ellen was rescued by someone posing as a member of the local Ku Klux Klan and taken to the hospital in order to recover from her injuries. Bullock was seen in the films "Hope Floats", "Demolition Man" and "The Proposal".

In 2010, she received an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the film, "The Blind Side". She also informed him that some classmates of their daughter's teased her at school over the way she supported the Hailey family. In one scene, the Brigance's residence was set ablaze by a couple members of the Ku Klux Klan but all of them survived the incident. Judd starred in the movies "High Crimes", "Double Jeopardy" and "Heat".
5. I did not like it when Ellen told me that she wished Carl Lee Hailey had shot me dead as well. Who played me?

Answer: Kiefer Sutherland

Sutherland, a native of London, England, was cast as Freddie Lee Cobb. Freddie was Billy Ray Cobb's brother and he hated how Carl Lee killed him on the day he was set to go to trial for the alleged rape of Carl Lee's daughter. In one scene, Freddie spoke with a friend about how it had been a while since the Ku Klux Klan had a presence in their community.

They started another chapter of the group and organized at meetings about how they would respond to what Carl Lee Hailey had done. After Ellen had been kidnapped, Freddie Lee Cobb spoke to her about how he would leave her tied up at their campsite and the sun would eventually burn her to death. Ellen responded by telling him how she felt Carl Lee ought to have also killed him as well, which upset Freddie Lee since he slammed her head into a tree.

At the end of the movie, Freddie expressed disgust when the jury acquitted Carl Lee Hailey of all charges filed against him. Sutherland guest starred on the TV shows "Fallen Angels" and "Amazing Stories".

He is best known for his portrayal of Jack Bauer on the hit prime-time series "24".
6. I prosecuted Carl Lee Hailey for two counts of murder. I lost the case. Who played me?

Answer: Kevin Spacey

Spacey, born in 1959 in South Orange, New Jersey, played Rufus Buckley. Rufus was the District Attorney in the county where Carl Lee Hailey lived and he was first seen in his law office when he expressed disappointment at his law clerk. He was notified of a case which had been brought forth to him on Carl Lee's killing Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard and he eventually filed charges. During the trial, Rufus interviewed multiple people, ranging from eyewitnesses to expert witnesses.

In one memorable scene, he was seen giving a closing argument to the jury when he showed them the gun which Carl Lee Hailey used to murder the two men and how Carl Lee placed justice in the hands of that firearm. Even though he built a strong case, coupled with a sophisticated plea for a guilty verdict, the jury decided in favor of the defense. Spacey had roles in the films "Seven", "Superman Returns" and "L.A. Confidential".

In 1996, he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the film "The Usual Suspects".

Ozzie was the Sheriff in the vicinity where the Hailey family resided and he received a call one day of a reported rape. Sheriff Wells went to a bar to confront Billy Ray Cobb and Pete Willard about it, as they were the ones accused of rape, and Billy Ray called Sheriff Wells a bad name.

He responded by knocking him to the table and then ordered that both men be handcuffed and taken into custody. He was in the courthouse the day when Carl Lee Hailey killed Cobb and Willard.

In one scene, Sheriff Wells was seen handling the media when they attempted to get a statement from Jake Brigance about his representing Carl Lee Hailey. Throughout the movie, Sheriff Wells was seen on multiple occasions in the courtroom when Carl Lee Hailey's trial took place. Dutton guest starred on the TV shows "CSI: NY", "My Name is Earl" and "Without a Trace".
8. I was acquitted of two counts of murder. Who played me?

Answer: Samuel L. Jackson

Jackson, a native of Washington, D.C., played Carl Lee Hailey. Carl Lee was the husband of Gwen Hailey and both of them were saddened when they heard about their daughter, Tonya, being attacked. Carl Lee was arrested for murder after he shot his daughter's alleged attackers dead and was unable to make bail. Throughout the movie, there were a couple of rallies held in support of Carl Lee in which chants of "Free Carl Lee!" were heard.

In a pivotal scene in the movie, Carl Lee took the stand at his trial and answered questions about the day he killed the two men.

When the district attorney asked Carl Lee Hailey if he felt they deserved to die, Carl Lee unapologetically responded that he felt that way and hoped they rotted in the afterlife. At the end of the movie, Carl Lee Hailey was found not guilty of the murders and set free.

After the trial, Jake, his daughter and his wife paid Carl Lee and his family a visit at their home when they threw a barbecue. Jake told him that he wanted his daughter to make friends with Carl Lee's children and Carl Lee simply smiled. Jackson had roles in the films "Lakeview Terrace", "Coach Carter" and "Jurassic Park".

Gwen stood by her husband when he was charged with murder and this was very apparent when she was seen in court during his trial. During Jake Brigance's closing arguments and Carl Lee's testimony, Gwen was seen shedding plenty of tears at the emotional gravitas from both men's words.

At the end of the movie, Gwen and Carl Lee held a barbecue to celebrate his acquittal and the Brigances arrived. Carla introduced her daughter to Gwen and gave her a peach cobbler while Gwen took Jake and Carla's daughter over to meet her children.
