Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This DJ's real name is Joel Zimmerman, who hails from the great nation of Canada. He is known for his unique album titles, and released three records in 2009. Originally entering DJ Mag's chart at number 11, his jump in 2009 is reflective of his wide popularity. Which DJ am I referring to, producer of such singles as 'Faxing Berlin,' 'Ghosts N' Stuff,' and 'Strobe'?

Answer: deadmau5

Supposedly, the name 'deadmau5' came from both some computer trouble, and an attempt to join an internet chat room. As the story goes, Joel was using his computer, when it started making weird noises. Not to be deterred by this, he promptly opened the case and discovered that a mouse had climbed inside and subsequently died in there. With the name now in hand, he attempted to join a chat room, but found that the name "deadmouse" was too long. And so, with his truncated user name, he is now a world-renowned DJ. Go figure.
2. Moving southward to the United States, this trance producer originally started off in Germany, but subsequently moved to Miami in the mid 80s. He runs a weekly radio show entitled 'Global DJ Broadcast,' which features a variety of dance music from all around the world. Name this DJ who (albeit rarely) also goes by the name of 'Dakota.'

Answer: Markus Schulz

The Cosmic Gate remix of his 'Sin City' tune in 2009 was probably one of my favorite tracks to come out that year. A few of his older songs that you might know include: 'Fly to Colors,' 'Do You Dream,' and 'Perfect.' He is also the founder of Coldharbour Recordings, and donated a track ('Cranberries') to be used in the production of charity video game "Chime".

Hey, this is trivia, after all.
3. Moving across the Atlantic, this English DJ was born in Southampton in 1980, making him the second youngest DJ on the list (just one year older than Joel Zimmerman). Many of his songs and remixes feature vocals that "stutter," or vocals that cut in and out, leaving short, alternating clips of voice and silence. Name this DJ, whose hits include 'This is That,' 'More Like Anything,' and 'Metropolis.'

Answer: Gareth Emery

Gareth Emery (full name Gareth Thomas Rhys Emery) has gone by the names GTR, Cupa, and Digital Blues; however, he is now (obviously) performing under his original name. He also runs the record label Garuda, and likes to use profanity. Or, at least, from what I can tell from my reading of his posts and stuff.
4. Staying in the UK, this trance trio is probably best known for their weekly podcast, "Trance Around the World". Forming back in 2000, the trio (comprised of Jono, Paavo and Tony) has produced just one album under their original name; however, they have produced a number of albums under their various side projects. Name this wildly successful trance act, which also runs the record label Anjunabeats and all of its subsidiaries.

Answer: Above & Beyond

Above & Beyond actually hadn't technically formed until 2004, but Paavo and Jono were already producing trance music through Anjunabeats, and had been doing so for nearly four years. Subsequently, Tony came along and wanted to do a remix with the two, and Above & Beyond was formed.

They have ties to many other side projects and aliases, with just a few being Tranquility Base, OceanLab, and Tongue of God. Needless to say, they are all prolific musicians.
5. Crossing the English Channel into the Netherlands, we arrive and find a DJ who is still relatively unknown. Born as Sander Ketelaars, he quite recently (2008) won an International Dance Music Award for being the next "breakthrough DJ." Evidently he must be someone of note. Who is this DJ, who has also gone by the aliases of Purple Haze, Filterfunk, and Sandler?

Answer: Sander van Doorn

No, not 'Purple-Haze-the-60s-rock-band,' 'Purple-Haze-as-in-I've-only-released-one-popular-song-Purple-Haze.' Other than what's already stated, there isn't too much about this guy. Maybe someone to watch in the future?
6. Staying within the Netherlands, this wildly successful DJ hosts his own radio show, "A State of Trance." Originally entering college to study law, he subsequently got into the trance music scene. Now he's the frontman for record label Armada, with a number of CDs and tracks being released on the way to boot. Who is this DJ?

Answer: Armin van Buuren

Goodness, is this man popular. With just three albums since about 2003, along with the most listened to trance radio show in the world, and numerous side projects (namely: Gaia), what can stop Armin van Buuren? Not much, it would seem. However, while he may have his hands full releasing compilations and managing music all the time, it doesn't exactly leave a lot of time for personal music production, or just the personal life in general. Strange how he managed to get married, no?
7. This DJ, born as Tijs Michiel Verwest is another incredibly popular producer. He runs a weekly radio show entitled "Club Life," and has released a number of albums, the most famous of which being 'Just Be,' and 'Elements of Life.' Most notably, he played at the opening ceremony for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, being the first DJ to ever do so. Who is this Dutch DJ?

Answer: Tiësto

Releasing the "In Search of Sunrise" compilation CD every year or so, along with playing a number of gigs around the world, producing tracks with rap groups (Three 6 Mafia, I believe), and producing remixes of other, non-traditional tracks cannot be easy. Which makes the fact that he managed to get appointed to the Order of Orange-Nassau (a military and civil decorum) all the more impressive. And he's also the official ambassador for a philanthropic group.
8. And now, for our last DJ in the Netherlands, this man, also known as System F, runs a weekly trance radio show known as 'Corsten's Countdown.' He collaborated with DJ Tiësto under the projects Gouryella and Vimana, and he later founded the record label "Flashover Recordings." Name this Dutch DJ who has encountered massive success within the past few years, potentially selling the greatest number of singles in the UK.

Answer: Ferry Corsten

He has also collaborated with Benny Benassi under the name "FB," and has released a number of albums since 1996 (not as FB, though). He also claims to have pioneered a new direction in the world of EDM (electronic dance music), dubbing his new style as L.E.F., or Loud Electronic Ferocious. Apparently, it's also supposed to bridge all of the styles of EDM into one singular genre.

It's a good idea, yes, but as multi-genre music typically only pertains to a small percentage of the population, it will be interesting to see the longevity of his new style.
9. Moving southward into France, this DJ is one of the oldest in the Top Ten, being 42 years old. Just within 2009, he has collaborated with Akon, will.i.am, Fergie, and many others. His past album releases have included such projects as 'Just a Little More Love,' and 'One Love.' Name this Parisian-born DJ.

Answer: David Guetta

Within the past few years, it would seem as though he's moving more towards the pop scene than anything else (as noted by his collaborations), but he still remains a DJ through-and-through. He's also won a few Grammys, most of which for collaborating. Hey, if it gets you known, then I guess you can't really have a problem with it.
10. Moving eastward, to our final country, and subsequently, DJ, this producer, born as Matthias Paul, has been (and still is) quite a prolific DJ. Releasing three EPs in 1994, he has continued his production to this day. While in recent years he has not necessarily classified his own music as "trance," it has not stopped the juggernaut production house that he's become. Name this German DJ who has released such tracks as 'Nothing But You,' 'Tell Me Why (The Riddle),' and 'Crush.'

Answer: Paul van Dyk

While there may not be much of a distinction between 'trance' and 'electronic dance music' on the surface, it represents a larger paradigm shift as a whole. It's become commonplace now to use basic drum beats or slightly varied synths in pop music, along with all of their other "innovations." Admittedly, one DJ preferring to widen his horizon doesn't reflect the genre as a whole, but it's just something to think about.
