Rob married model, Marisol Maldonado in 1999. Rob has a son named Maison Avery from a previous relatitionship. The two were introduced in Montreal after a Matchbox Twenty concert by a mutual friend. The first time they met each other, they both knew they would be married.

They talked on the phone for months, because Rob was in Europe at the time, and went on their first date at a music festival in Boston. Rob and Marisol were married on October 2, 1999 in Rob's manager's California home.
