Question 1 of 15
1. I thought I'd make the first one the easiest!

"I've never seen you look like this without a reason
Another promise fallen through, another season
Passes by you
I never took the smile away from anybody's face
And that's some desperate way to look for someone who is still a child."
Hint

Question 2 of 15
2. See if you know this movie-inspired one...

"Hey ma, hey pa
Look at me standing tall
Brother, sister
Look at them bad guys fall."
Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. Personally I like this one's anology about El Dorado and I hope you do too:

"I know there is no need for what's been done
I know there is enough for everyone
Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear
And there's never been a hand
Did we ever have it good?
While we lived in El Dorado
Did we find the gold we should?"
Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. Can you tell me the name of this one?

"I've seen too much of what fighting has done
I've seen too much anger and I've seen it far too young
And talk will come to nothing while the shouting still goes on
But we are only singers and too many songs are sung."
Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. This song is good both live and studio but if you haven't heard the live one yet I strongly recommend it!

"I'm gonna find it
I'm gonna prove it
Show the whole damn world how to use it
When I find it
When I prove it
I know that some damn fool is gonna lose it."
Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. You may not get this one, it's one of the harder ones, but at least you tried so be proud.

"I was waiting, I was watching
Would it ever be before me
And I found that hope and a lucky card
Were all I had to walk with me."
Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. Pity lyrics never let one hear the music or feel the song's atmosphere...

"The eagle soars above the clouds
The deer ran into the hills
And I may walk in cities
Where the wolf once had his fill."
Hint

Question 8 of 15
8. I tried to make this one the hardest to guess by reading the four choices provided.

"I'm grateful for the company
Tired of talking to myself
Don't you look into my eyes
You might see someone else."
Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. Quite a depessing song, nevertheless very enjoyable. I sound contradictory, I know.

"He came like a hero from the factory floor
With the sun and moon as gifts
But the only son you ever saw
Were the two he left you with."
Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. It may be hard to identify this song without its music but have a go anyway.

"Stones will stand together as if searching for the stars
And all come crashing down again before they reach too far
She turned to face the setting sun, I turned to walk away
But then she called my name again and beckoned me to stay.

All this will pass
All things must pass
Just as I tell you here."
Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. I wanted to reproduce more of this song but its title (or titles) would have appeared too often. (Is that a clue?)

"And you may fight or you may run
For what was fast is now undone."
Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. Another song better heard with the music too.

"Who saw the fences falling
Who broke the ploughman's bread
Who heard the winter calling
Who wore the tailors thread."
Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. This song on the other hand is just as good without the music.

"[Song Title] will you show to me
The bond between the land and sea?
For I am new to mystery
I want everything laid out for me."
Hint

Question 14 of 15
14. I hope you haven't found this quiz to be full of Big Country songs you haven't heard before. If so this one's for you...

"Between a father and a son
Between the city and the one
Before the teacher and the test
Before the journey and the rest."
Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. This song is different from all the others in the quiz. Do you know why?

"Isn't it a shame when a man loses all direction
Ain't it just the way to lose your soul
Isn't it a shame when a love won't make a connection
And you've seen love on a better day.

Your wasted dreams your broken heart
Those never ends and started starts
Your star that shone so high and free
The glory days that let you be."
Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I thought I'd make the first one the easiest! "I've never seen you look like this without a reason Another promise fallen through, another season Passes by you I never took the smile away from anybody's face And that's some desperate way to look for someone who is still a child."

Answer: In A Big Country

It was the first BC song I'd ever heard and six years on I still like it. Stuart Adamson the late lead singer still looks admirable on the video.
2. See if you know this movie-inspired one... "Hey ma, hey pa Look at me standing tall Brother, sister Look at them bad guys fall."

Answer: John Wayne's Dream

Another easy one. Unfortunately, I've run out of generosity so the next few questions will require having actually heard the songs.
3. Personally I like this one's anology about El Dorado and I hope you do too: "I know there is no need for what's been done I know there is enough for everyone Frustration brings a heavy hand to bear And there's never been a hand Did we ever have it good? While we lived in El Dorado Did we find the gold we should?"

Answer: Just A Shadow

That is a cleverly written classic, I must say. Pity when it comes to music one doesn't normally pay attention to the lyrics unless the music's so memorable one decides to look up the lyrics. (I find that to be the case, anyway). And Big Country's lyrics normally take a bit of thinking about.
4. Can you tell me the name of this one? "I've seen too much of what fighting has done I've seen too much anger and I've seen it far too young And talk will come to nothing while the shouting still goes on But we are only singers and too many songs are sung."

Answer: One Great Thing

If you ticked one of the wrong titles don't feel bad, I still get them mixed up with "One Great Thing" because they all have such similar themes!
5. This song is good both live and studio but if you haven't heard the live one yet I strongly recommend it! "I'm gonna find it I'm gonna prove it Show the whole damn world how to use it When I find it When I prove it I know that some damn fool is gonna lose it."

Answer: River Of Hope

As Stuart said at a BBC concert "Sometimes the human race is given absolutely marvellous gifts, and we take those gifts and squander them, just because we're human beings. This is all about that."
6. You may not get this one, it's one of the harder ones, but at least you tried so be proud. "I was waiting, I was watching Would it ever be before me And I found that hope and a lucky card Were all I had to walk with me."

Answer: East Of Eden

Another song where the music was quite good and memorable and so later I decided to look up its lyrics. (Though I'm still not entirely sure what they're about!)
7. Pity lyrics never let one hear the music or feel the song's atmosphere... "The eagle soars above the clouds The deer ran into the hills And I may walk in cities Where the wolf once had his fill."

Answer: Eiledon

A very nice song with some nice music. I originally thought "Eiledon" was the name of a girl, or a name for the eagle in the song, or even a place in Scotland. But in fact it means something entirely different. I did some internet research and found the following:

First, there is Eildon, a historically notable "beauty spot" whose ancient inhabitants opposed the Roman occupation... Second, there is the word "eidolon" which suggests something which is seen but not quite real. This word can connote something dark and ominous, as in Poe's verse (and in Stuart's warning that "reckoning is drawing near"), but can also mean an ideal, an imaginary thing which is yearned for by the writer. By combining these two distinct words -- Eildon and eidolon -- into "Eiledon", Stuart creates his own ideal "place to call my own". Eiledon is an imaginary place, but it still provides "strength... to see the future through."

It sounds plausible enough.
8. I tried to make this one the hardest to guess by reading the four choices provided. "I'm grateful for the company Tired of talking to myself Don't you look into my eyes You might see someone else."

Answer: Fragile Thing

Stuart and Eddi Reader sing "Love is a small and fragile thing." And sometimes I'm inclined to agree!
9. Quite a depessing song, nevertheless very enjoyable. I sound contradictory, I know. "He came like a hero from the factory floor With the sun and moon as gifts But the only son you ever saw Were the two he left you with."

Answer: Chance

I guess this is Stuart and co's way off saying be careful whom you love. If a baby is suddenly on the way, will your newfound "hero" stick around?
10. It may be hard to identify this song without its music but have a go anyway. "Stones will stand together as if searching for the stars And all come crashing down again before they reach too far She turned to face the setting sun, I turned to walk away But then she called my name again and beckoned me to stay. All this will pass All things must pass Just as I tell you here."

Answer: The Seer

Kate Bush sings in this song as a backing vocalist.
11. I wanted to reproduce more of this song but its title (or titles) would have appeared too often. (Is that a clue?) "And you may fight or you may run For what was fast is now undone."

Answer: 13 Valleys (Broken Heart)

Their other song "The Longest Day" is very similar to "Broken Heart". I recommend both if you haven't heard them before. The former was written for a movie with the same name.
12. Another song better heard with the music too. "Who saw the fences falling Who broke the ploughman's bread Who heard the winter calling Who wore the tailors thread."

Answer: Harvest Home

I'm not entirely sure what this song's about, but it's beat and music are so good I just had to include it in my quiz!
13. This song on the other hand is just as good without the music. "[Song Title] will you show to me The bond between the land and sea? For I am new to mystery I want everything laid out for me."

Answer: Teacher

If I'd said the song title in the lyrics it would give the answer away...
14. I hope you haven't found this quiz to be full of Big Country songs you haven't heard before. If so this one's for you... "Between a father and a son Between the city and the one Before the teacher and the test Before the journey and the rest."

Answer: Fields of Fire

This song was written about the Falklands Islands War.
15. This song is different from all the others in the quiz. Do you know why? "Isn't it a shame when a man loses all direction Ain't it just the way to lose your soul Isn't it a shame when a love won't make a connection And you've seen love on a better day. Your wasted dreams your broken heart Those never ends and started starts Your star that shone so high and free The glory days that let you be."

Answer: Dreamboy

Sung by Tony Butler the bassist (that's what's different), at the Stuart Adamson Tribute concert. Needless to say Stuart could not sing it, he'd hanged himself in Hawaii in late 2001.
We all wish him well and godspeed and thank him for the songs.
