The Beatles performed "Chains" regularly in their live shows and decided to record the tune on their debut album. George Harrison sang lead with Lennon and McCartney providing close harmonies. George Martin produced the session.
British music critics were not keen on the tune and it was not released as a single from their album.
"Introducing The Beatles" was the first album released by the Beatles in the United States. In the UK their debut album was titled "Please Please Me". Both albums included "Chains".
In 1963 "Sugar and Spice" was the first US chart entry by The Searchers. The following year "Just One Look" was the first US single charted by The Hollies. In the same year Manfred Mann's first entry into the US charts, "Do Wah Diddy Diddy", hit Number One.

"Don't Bring Me Down" made the Top Ten in the UK but peaked at Number 12 in the US during the summer of 1966. The Animals preferred to record and perform songs in the Rhythm and Blues and Blues genres but enjoyed chart success with songs by Brill Building songwriters such as Goffin and King.

By the time "Don't Bring Me Down" was recorded Dave Rowberry had replaced Animals' organist Alan price. His organ riff combined with Chas Chandler's bass line were the focal point of the arrangement for "Don't Bring Me Down". "It's My Life" was written by fellow Brill Building songwriters Roger Atkins and Carl D'Errico. Bennie Benjamin, Gloria Caldwell and Sol Marcus composed "Don't Let Me be Misunderstood".

Shirley Owens, lead singer for the group, was reluctant to record the song because she thought it was more of a Country tune than a Pop song. Despite the banning of the song by some stations because of the suggestive lyrics "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" topped the charts. Since the original release the song has been covered by over 25 artists from Lesley Gore to Amy Winehouse as either "Will You Love Me Tomorrow" or "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow".
