Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'He said I'll love you 'til I die.'

Answer: 'He Stopped Loving Her Today'

Okay, okay, I know it's a simple one. Just easing you in. This song, sung by George Jones, was voted the greatest country song of all time by the readers of Country Weekly magazine.
2. 'I hear that train a-comin', it's rollin' 'round the bend.'

Answer: 'Folsom Prison Blues'

Johnny Cash's theme song. One of the all-time great country songs.
3. 'Well, the sun's gonna shine in my life once more.'

Answer: 'Love's Gonna Live Here'

One of Buck Owens and the Buckaroos many number one hits of the '60s. In fact, so were all of the other possible answers for this question
4. 'I've got a sad, sad story friend, that I don't like to tell.'

Answer: 'Life To Go'

A classic from Stonewall Jackson, written by George Jones. Other than 'Waterloo', this is probably Stonewall's most well known song.
5. 'You're back in town again, spreading talk around.'

Answer: 'I've Got a New Heartache'

Originally recorded by the man with the voice, Ray Price. Ricky Skaggs covered this in the 80's and made the song a top ten hit.
6. A tough one: 'Hello dear, will the same place be alright?'

Answer: 'Yes Mr. Peters'

An interesting duet sung by Roy Drusky and Priscilla {Mitchell;} the song has a man's lover asking him for a meeting over the phone while he pretends that its his boss asking him to come in to work (to fool his wife). Not the prettiest melody, but it was a big hit for them in 1965.
7. 'There's a storm across the valley, clouds are rollin' in.'

Answer: 'Back Home Again'

Slightly out of place with the other artists in this quiz, John Denver did record this one very traditional song. It was such a big hit that he won the CMA Entertainer of the Year that year, prompting Charlie Rich to burn the card onstage when he had to announce the winner.
8. 'The first thing I remember knowin' was a lonesome whistle blowin'.'

Answer: 'Mama Tried'

A wonderful song by my personal all-time favorite artist, Merle Haggard. He's one of the few singers of prison songs that has actually done real prison time, for armed robbery in the mid-1950s.
9. 'If I see you tomorrow on some street in town, pardon me if I don't say hello.'

Answer: Walk On By

This is THE biggest country hit of all time, staying at number 1 on the country charts for 19 weeks in 1961 and 1962.
10. 'I saw you staring at each other, I saw your eyes begin to glow.'

Answer: 'Old Flame'

A number one hit in 1982 for Alabama, from the 'Feels So Right' album. It's hard to believe how big this band was in the early '80s, but they won award after award and every single they released was a huge hit.
11. 'When you found somebody new, I thought I never would.'

Answer: 'Once a Day'

'Once a Day' is the biggest hit in Connie Smith's career, and while that's not a bad thing, she should be remembered for much, much more. She really was one of the best female voices that country music ever had.
12. 'Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.'

Answer: 'He'll Have To Go'

Kind of a gift question - Jim Reeves is probably best known for this song. He's not one of my favorites, but you can't deny his success. A very smooth voice for all those drippy ballads.
13. 'The sun goes down in Calvin county, neon lights from an old beer sign.'

Answer: 'Paper Rosie'

This was a big hit for Gene Watson around 1980. Always a very traditional country singer, Gene's greatest success was with 'Farewell Party', and that's only fair. When he hits that high note, it'll send shivers down your spine.
14. 'In a bar in Toledo across from the depot, on a barstool she took off her ring.'

Answer: 'Lucille'

This song that made Kenny Rogers a superstar. Kenny was the highest selling country artist of all time with more than 50 million record sales, until Garth Brooks came along.
15. 'I've made a small fortune and you squandered it all.'

Answer: 'Thank God and Greyhound'

A huge hit for Roy Clark in the late 1960s. Best known as the co-host of 'Hee Haw', it's doubtful that he'll be remembered as the great talent that he was. Along with Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, the most innovative and talented guitar player Nashville has ever seen.
16. 'Oh mama I'm excited, I'm almost out of breath.'

Answer: 'Company's Coming'

The song that put Porter Wagoner on the country music map. Although he had many hits of his own, his recording career is known mainly for his many duets with Dolly Parton, who he discovered.
17. 'The people would come from far away and dance all night 'til the break of day.'

Answer: 'Uncle Pen'

A great toe-tapper from the King of Bluegrass music, Bill Monroe. Ricky Skaggs would also have a hit with this song in the mid-'80s. 'Uncle Pen played the fiddle Lord, how it would ring, you could hear it talk you could hear it sing.'
18. 'I can't stand to see a good man gone to waste.'

Answer: '(I Never Go Around) Mirrors'

An absolute classic from Lefty Frizzell. I dare anyone who's feeling sad about a lost love to hear this song and not break down in tears.
19. 'I tried so hard, my dear, to show that you're my every dream.'

Answer: Cold Cold Heart

One of Hank Williams' greatest. Nobody had a bigger impact on country music than this artist, who wrote so many standards we could have a few quizzes on his music alone....
20. 'As I look at the letters that you wrote to me, it's you that I am thinking of.'

Answer: 'Faded Love'

I'm not sure who was the first to record this all-time great tune, but the record that I have was by Pasty Cline.
21. 'When we dance together my world's in disguise.'

Answer: 'Waltz Across Texas'

Anyone who got this wrong better not show their face in the Lone Star state. Ernest Tubb's most renowned song (although I prefer 'The Wild Side of Life.')
22. 'You wined me and dined me when I was your girl.'

Answer: 'The Pill'

When Loretta Lynn recorded this song it was unbelievably risque - these days its downright {tame;} 'Miniskirts, hot pants and a few little fancy frills, yeah I'm makin' up for all those years now that I've got the pill.'
23. 'Oh, I'll twine my mangles and waving black hair.'

Answer: 'Wildwood Flower'

Probably the best-known song from country music's first family, The Carter Family.
24. 'I was out on the west coast tryin' to make a buck, and things didn't work out, I was down on my luck.'

Answer: 'Phantom 309'

A truly cool song from Red Sovine. Like many of his songs, he speaks the lyrics, and since it's about a ghost, that echo and reverb he does is spooky. Love it.
25. 'You know this whole world is full of singers, but just a few are chosen, to tear your heart out when they sing.' This song is called 'Who's Gonna _____ _____ _____?'

Answer: Fill Their Shoes

A tribute, sung by George Jones in 1984, about the great country singers of the past. We could now ask the same question about George.
