Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Ferrando, why was the old gypsy woman burned at the stake?

Answer: She allegedly practiced witchcraft.

While the woman was being burned for witchcraft, she tells her daughter, Azucena, to avenge her death. For years, Azucena is tormented by watching her mother die. To avenge her mother, she kidnaps the Count's younger son with the intent of burning him to death. Unfortunately, she burns her own son by mistake and ends up raising the boy known as Manrico.
2. When Leonora sees Count di Luna, who does she mistake him for?

Answer: Her lover Manrico

It was nighttime and she couldn't tell whether or not he was Manrico.
3. When Manrico and Count di Luna fight for the affections of Leonara, Manrico finally has his rival right where he wants him but does not kill him. Why?

Answer: A voice from the Heavens told him not to.

Azucena is disappointed in her "son" Manrico when she finds out that he didn't kill di Luna when he should have. She tells him to do so the next time they are fighting. And all of this is going on while Manrico was trying to figure out who his real mother is when Azucena informs him that she mistakenly burned her own (biological) son to death.
4. After the fight, Leonara believes Manrico to be dead. What does she do next?

Answer: She prepares to take vows to be a nun.

Upon hearing this, both Manrico and Count di Luna stop this from happening but Manrico manages to whisk Leanora away before di Luna could get to her.
5. Meanwhile, Ferrando informs Count di Luna that they have captured a gypsy woman who turns out to be Azucena, the mother of Manrico. What is the suggested punishment?

Answer: Burning at the stake.

This drives Azucena nuts when she's in prison and her flashbacks of her mother's death don't help that much.
6. Manrico hears the news of the capture of his mother and rushes to her aid. What was he about to do beforehand?

Answer: Marry Leonara.

Just as they were about to exchange wedding vows, Manrico's right hand man, Ruiz, informs him that his mother was captured by Count di Luna's army.
7. Manrico's men and Count di Luna's armies go at each other. Unfortunately, Manrico's side loses and he is captured. What is his fate?

Answer: Execution.

Not surprisingly, Leanora doesn't take this very well.
8. In order to save her lover, what does Leanora propose to Count di Luna?

Answer: She will marry him.

Count di Luna is pleased and seals the deal; however, Leanora has other ideas.
9. To escape the fate that she accepted for Manrico's freedom, what does Leanora do?

Answer: She drinks poison.

She drinks poison to avoid having to marry di Luna. Now, if you picked the sleeping potion, you're thinking "Romeo and Juliet".
10. What does Azucena tell Count di Luna at the end of the opera?

Answer: That Manrico is actually his younger brother.

Right after Leanora dies and Manrico is executed, Azucena cries out in joy as her mother's death is now "avenged." She then says to Count di Luna that Manrico was the younger brother that was abducted. The play ends with di Luna distraught over his brother's death.
