Her full name at birth was Édith Giovanna Gassion. She was given the name "La Mome Piaf" by Louis Leplee, a nightclub owner who discovered her on the street and gave her her first big break in show business.

"Piaf" was another word for "sparrow" in the Parisian dialect. (The more common word for sparrow in French is "moinneau".)
