Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did Ghetto Mentality release their first single?

Answer: 1994

"Blowin' Up" was released in 1994, and was the group's first song to recieve radio play. Many of the group's songs were played on stations throughout the US, but were always on Rap-specific/underground shows. They never made the regular rotation.
2. Who, of the following, was NEVER a member of Ghetto Mentality?

Answer: Dazer

Dazer had some guest appearences on the album, but was never a member. Although Daddy Cee and Burt-Locz were the only members at the release of the album, L-Dogg was once a member and recorded on "Hit 'N' Run". His verses were dropped from this song, however, because his style was too "Old School" and the other two members thought it incompatible with the group's style. L-Dogg's intro to the song was preserved, and appeared on a single and the album. L-Dogg continued as part of the group's entourage after his dismissal.
3. On the single "Git Up", L-Dogg's verse was not actually performed by L-Dogg.

Answer: True

L-Dogg was unable to make it to the studio the day it was recorded, so Burt-Locz recorded L-Dogg's verse over Daddy Cee's objections, using voice distorion equipment to make his voice sound like L-Dogg's. When the album was released the next year Daddy Cee got his way, and the deceptive L-Dogg verse was removed from the song.
4. Who was generally considered to be the "front-man" for GM?

Answer: Daddy Cee

Although both Burt-Locz and Daddy Cee shared lead vocals on most of the songs, Daddy Cee did more vocals and generally called the shots when it came to production and what was acceptable song-writing. The group was also started Daddy Cee, who owned the trademark on the name of the group as well. E-Bay and Madd Dogg both had guest appearences on the album.
5. What was the name of the DJ who had a guest appearance on "Playerz Mentality"?

Answer: DJ Sam Smith

Jarom Lee aka DJ Germ produced original music for four of the tracks on the album, but he never appeared as a DJ, only as a producer/composer/programmer/keyboard player.
6. Where were Daddy Cee and Burt-Locz from, respectively?

Answer: Salt Lake City and Los Angeles

Cee was from the Glendale area on the West Side of Salt Lake City, While BL claimed to be from Compton, California. There are many reports, however, that BL was from Lawndale and never lived in Compton but had family there. Regardeless, he was from what is considered to be the LA metro area.
7. What was the name of the indie label on which "Birth Of A Legacy" was released?

Answer: Ten Warriors Records

Daddy Cee was the founder and owner of this label. He started it in 1995 when a radio station refused to play GM's music because they were not "signed". It is said that he later refused to allow that same station to play their music in 1996 when the station came to GM to ask for permission to use one of their songs on a nightly mix show. Ten Warriors was allegedly a combination of the real first names of the two group members: Sefulu, which means "ten" in Samoan, and Chad which means "warrior" in ancient European tongues.

The group was entering negotiation with Wild West Records (a subsidiary of Motown) when they disbanded.
8. When the song "Glendale 2 Midvale" was played on air for the first time ever on KRCL in Salt Lake City, which of the following did NOT happen?

Answer: The song went #1 in the SLC market

"Glendale 2 Midvale" actually out-requested new material from Snoop Dogg and 2 Pac at the station for a two month period. Although a direct link to Midvale's increased crime rate was never established, in 1999 Daddy Cee publicly denounced the song and several like it on the very station it debuted on.

He also apologized to the communities mentioned in and affected by the song. While refusing to take responsibility for the actions of others, he did state that he regretted any negative influence the group's music may have had.
9. When Ghetto Mentality broke up they had to cancel an appearance on "Prime Time Live".

Answer: True

The group was poised for some heavy duty, national exposure. Prior to then they had only been played on smaller stations during specialty shows although in markets as varied as LA, SLC, Kansas, and Washington DC. The group seemed on the verge of total success when Daddy Cee decided to close up shop, fired Burt-Locz, disbanded the record label, and walked away.
10. With the limited national exposure GM had recieved, and the huge national exposure they seemed poised benefit from between scheduled TV appearences and record label negotiations the group disbanded. Why?

Answer: Daddy Cee fired Burt-Locz and disbanded the group after a personal conflict between the two

Although there were rumors of Daddy Cee going to prison and even dying, and he allegedly did have a substance abuse problem, the break up was actually the result of a personal conflict between the two members. Daddy Cee stated that whatever had transpired was serious enough that he could never trust Burt-Locz again. (It is interesting to note that Daddy Cee also filed for divorce from his first wife shortly after the break up of the group.) On a happier note, Cee has reportedly been sober since 1997.

In 2003 he stated that he was happier than he had ever been, and had no regrets about leaving the music industry.
