Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." (Genesis 1 v. 3) There can be few more iconic words than these in the Bible, so it is not surprising that many songwriters have chosen to parody them. Which of the following is NOT a real example - though you might wish it to be genuine?

Answer: "Let There Be Lycra" by Lady Gaga

"Let There Be More Light" appears on Pink Floyd's album, "A Saucerful of Secrets". "Let There Be Rock" was a 1977 album and single released by AC/DC. "Let There Be Love", written in 1940 by Lionel Rand and Ian Grant, has been recorded by many artists. Cole's version reached number 11 in the UK in 1961.
2. According to the Bible, God made the world in six days. On the seventh day came rest. What, according to Kiss, did God create on the eighth day?

Answer: Rock 'n' Roll

"And on the Eighth Day" appears on the 1983 Kiss album, "Lick It Up". Although never released as a single, the song has become a firm favourite with fans. The album received additional publicity due to the band removing their makeup on the eve of its release.
3. Having been made from the soil of the ground, Adam is given the task of naming the animals as they are created. Which artist, recently converted to Christianity in 1979, featured a song called "Man Gave Names to all the Animals" on his album, "Slow Train Coming"?

Answer: Bob Dylan

The album had may critics questioning whether Dylan had lost his incisive lyrical insight. Who can blame them when you consider that "Man Gave Names to all the Animals" has lines such as:
"He saw an animal up on a hill
Chewing up so much grass until she was filled.
He saw milk comin' out but he didn't know how.
'Ah, think I'll call it a cow.'"

Having said that, the album's lead single, "Gotta Serve Somebody", did win a Grammy in 1980.
4. Then comes the story of Adam, Eve and their 'state of mind' when confronted with forbidden fruit. Whose modern take on this story is reflected in the lyric: "Don't bite the apple Eve, caught up in the in crowd, Now you're in-style, and in the winter gets cold, En vogue with your skin out, the city of sin is a pity on a whim ..."?

Answer: Jay-Z and Alicia Keys

The lyric is from "Empire State of Mind" which topped the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009 and reached number two in the UK.

Throughout history there had been a tension between rural and urban dwellers and this is reflected both in the Bible and in much modern popular culture. The city is viewed both as a thing of attraction and of suspicion. A further example of this can be found in the Good Charlotte song "The River", which pairs Los Angeles with the imagery of Jesus' parable of the Prodigal Son.
5. Adam and Eve were banished from paradise and the soundtrack to their exile sounds to have been provided in the 2007 album, "Long Road out of Eden", a first studio album since 1979 for which of these groups?

Answer: The Eagles

"Behold the bitten apple, the power of the tools
But all the knowledge in the world is of no use to fools
And it's a long road out of Eden"

I think it's safe to say that the tone of the title song is not one of optimism!
6. "Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to Cain. She said, "With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man." (Genesis 4 v. 1) Which American legend recorded "Adam Raised a Cain" on his 1978 album, "Darkness on the Edge of Town"?

Answer: Bruce Springsteen

"In the Bible Cain slew Abel
And East of Eden he was cast
You're born into this life paying
for the sins of somebody else's past"

Many fans and critics see "Darkness on the Edge of Town" (1978) as the bridge between Bruce's early work and the commercial success that he enjoyed from "The River" (1980) onwards. That said, the album is uncompromisingly built around its darkness of mood with no eye towards commercial singles.

"Adam Raised a Cain" deals with family relationships and not being able to escape your 'destiny' within that context - "You inherit the sins, you inherit the flames."
7. "Jara sang - his song a weapon In the hands of one though his blood still cries From the ground" "She stands with a naked flame I stand with the sons of Cain Burned by the fire of love" Two different songs on the same album reference the story of Abel's murder at the hands of his brother Cain. From which of these classic releases do they come?

Answer: The Joshua Tree - U2

"The Lord said, 'What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground'." (Genesis 4 v. 10)

The songs, respectively, are "One Tree Hill" and "In God's Country". Jara refers to Victor Jara, a Chilean poet and musician, who was murdered under the Pinochet regime in 1973.
8. The Genesis account of the Fall is followed by a story of angels visiting the Earth and fathering giants. This provided the name for which Gothic rock band?

Answer: Fields of the Nephilim

"The Nephilim were on the earth in those days - and also afterward - when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them." (Genesis 6 v. 4)

Fields of the Nephilim were formed in England in 1984. Despite enjoying only relatively minor chart success, they have been influential on others within their genre. They also, for some years, had a spoof column devoted to them in "Melody Maker", the newspaper of the British music industry.
9. "Although no one understood, we were holding back the flood Learning how to dance the rain There was more of them than us Now they'll never dance again" Which British group reinterpreted the story of the flood autobiographically, in their first single release after being reunited with former member Robbie Williams in 2010?

Answer: Take That

"The Flood" peaked at number two on the UK chart. Take That began life in the 1990s as a manufactured boy band with the usual emphasis on five good looking guys singing and dancing. They were phenomenally successful and, in this first phase of their career, topped the UK charts no less than 8 times. Williams left in 1995 to pursue a solo career and the rest of the band went their separate ways the following year. What Take That had, though, that others didn't, was the song-writing talents of Gary Barlow and this, ultimately, led to them reforming (minus Williams) in 2006. Further huge success followed at a time when all of their original rivals would "never dance again".

For further examples of artists developing the flood motif, check out Jackson Browne's "Before the Deluge" (from "Late for the Sky") or Bruce Springsteen's "Lost in the Flood" (from "Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J.").
10. "Saw it in the beginning, so shall it be in this iwa; And they fallen in confusion, well-a just a step from Babel Tower." The Tower of Babel - and scattering of humankind into many different languages - is the final one of Genesis' creation myths. The metaphors of Babel and Babylon are used powerfully in reggae music. Which reggae master was responsible for the lyric above from the song "Rastaman Live Up"?

Answer: Bob Marley

In the Bible, Babylon is at the heart of the Babylonian empire that conquered Israel in the sixth century BC. It came to represent worldly sophistication and progress. As Babel and Babylon share the same etymological root, it almost certainly also lies behind the story of the Tower of Babel, whose architects were so proud of their achievements that they set out to build a tower to the heavens.

Babylon had long since lost its power by New Testament times but the name was reinterpreted as a metaphor for oppressive regimes, particularly the Roman Empire. It is with this sense that the word has been embraced within reggae music. As with most good metaphors, it is precise enough for everyone to have a sense of what is meant, but loose enough to be used in multiple contexts.

"Rastaman Live Up" first appeared on the album "Confrontation" (1983), which was released two years after Marley's death in 1981.
