A bit of a humorous story regarding Russell Kelso Carter's classic hymn. The other Sunday at our chapel, an elder was serving as chairman of our Sunday morning service and as a result, he was responsible for selecting the hymns for the service and leading the people in singing. Usually when it's a rousing hymn, like 'Victory in Jesus' or 'How Great Thou Art', the chairman invites people to stand when they sing. On this particular Sunday, we stood for our opening hymn and then when everyone was seated, the elder invited us to sing 'Standing on the Promises' with no instructions given to stand. In other words, we were singing 'Standing on the Promises' while seated! After the second verse, the elder realized how preposterous it was for everyone to be seated while singing about standing on God's promises. After some blushing, he told everyone to stand for the remainder of the hymn.

Here are the words to the hymn 'Standing on the Promises'.

"Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
I'm standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

[Refrain]

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

[Refrain]

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by love's strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spirit's sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

[Refrain]

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listening every moment to the Spirit's call
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God.

[Refrain]"
