Porter Wagoner had Country success with Claude "Curly" Putman Jr.'s composition. Bobby Bare released a version in 1965 and Jerry Lee Lewis recorded the song the same year on his "Country Music for City Folks" LP.
In 1966 Tom Jones reached Number 11 on the US Pop charts with his version and Charley Pride recorded a version on his "Country" album. Tom Jones credited Jerry Lee Lewis' version with inspiring him to record the song. Several others artists in the US and internationally have released versions.
Faron Young's first Country chart success was in 1952 with "Goin' Steady", the same year that Ray Price reached Number Four with "Talk to Your Heart". "A Week in a Country Jail" was a Number One Country hit for Tom T. Hall.

The Byrds rejected "Eve of Destruction" before the Turtles, Jan and Dean and The Grassroots all recorded unsuccessful versions of the song. Barry McGuire took it to the top of the charts. Some of the top Los Angeles session players performed on the track while Barry reportedly did his vocal in one take while reading the lyrics. That take was supposed to be a scratch track it was ultimately released and became a major hit as well as the only Top Forty by Barry. "A Change Is Gonna Come" was a 1965 song by Sam Cooke that reached Number 31. Johnny Rivers took his version of "Seventh Son" to Number Seven. "One Dyin' and a Buryin'" was a Number 34 in 1965 by Roger Miller.

The Ohio-based Lemon Pipers recorded "Green Tambourine", the first Number One single for their label, Buddah Records. The record was Number One for only one week but it remained on the charts for three months.
Buddah producer Paul Leka wrote the song with Shelley Pinz and although the song did not appeal to The Lemon Pipers the band recorded it as an obligation under their contract.
"Incense and Peppermints" was a 1967 Number One hit by Strawberry Alarm Clock. "I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)" by The Electric Prunes reached Number 11. Peaches and Herb released "Let's Fall in Love", a Number 22 single in 1967.

"This Diamond Ring" was a 1965 chart topper for Gary Lewis and the Playboys. They followed up with a number of Top Ten hits until Gary was inducted into the Armed Forces. They began performing at Disneyland as Gary and the Playboys and quickly became popular. Liberty records producer Snuff Garrett heard the band and arranged for them to record a song recorded earlier in 1965 by Sammy Ambrose titled "This Diamond Ring" The song broke big on New York radio and became a national hit. The 1966 Number Seven "Along Comes Mary" was one of several hits by The Association.

The Lovin' Spoonful went to Number Two the same year with "Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind?" and Sam the Sham and The Pharaohs went to Number Two with "Lil' Red Riding Hood".

The Denver-based Sugarloaf originally called themselves Chocolate Hair but changed their name when they landed a record deal. Sugarloaf was the name of a mountain near Boulder, Colorado. After the success of "Green Eyed Lady" in 1970 they released another Top Ten five years later with "Don't Call Us, We'll Call You".
Band member Jerry Corbetta went on to work with The Four Seasons and Disco-Tex and the Sex-O-Lettes.

Sergeant Barry Sadler had a five week run at Number One in the US with "Ballad Of The Green Berets". Sadler injured his leg while serving in Vietnam and while recuperating he connected with Robin Moore, the author of a book titled "The Green Berets". The Green Berets was an elite force created by President Kennedy. The song was originally recorded specifically for the armed forces but it eventually received national attention and chart success.
Moore had Sadler pose for the cover of his paperback edition of "The Green Berets". John Wayne would go on to star in the movie version of the book.
The follow up release to "Ballad Of The Green Berets", "The A Team", did not fare well and Sadler's music career fizzled. He did some acting and reenlisted in the Army.

The Brothers Four enjoyed chart success in the early sixties before the British Invasion and Bob Dylan changed the music scene for Folk musicians. The Brothers Four formed in Seattle while they were members of a fraternity together. In 1959 they secured a recording deal with Columbia and their second single, "Greenfields", made it to Number Two the following year.

Their fourth single, "Green Leaves of Summer" was from the soundtrack to John Wayne's 1960 film, "The Alamo". The group performed the song at the 1961 Academy Awards.

In 1963 they performed the theme to the "Hootenanny" television show, "Hootenanny Saturday Night". The Kingston Trio had an early hit with "Tom Dooley". "Michael, Row the Boat Ashore" was a major sixties single for The Highwaymen.

The Limeliters featured the voice of Glenn Yarbrough.

After a stint in the service he settled into the Folk circuit in San Francisco, performing at such venues as The Troubadour.

He recorded an album titled "The Balladeer" in 1962 that contained "Greenback Dollar" then followed up with an album of the same name the following year. "Never Been To Spain" and "Joy to the World" were two songs by Hoyt Axton recorded by Three Dog Night. "Eli's Coming" was written by Laura Nyro. Harry Nilsson composed "One" and Randy Newman wrote "Mama Told Me Not to Come".
