Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The lullaby "Hush Little Baby" might have been the first song sung to you. It usually begins, "Hush little baby, don't say a word. Your Papa's gonna buy you a..." What?

Answer: a mockingbird

The author and origin of this lullaby is unknown. Depending on what country or even what part of the country you were born in, the gifts Papa brought you might vary. Some people even sing the beginning as "Hush Little Darlin'".
2. "A Tisket A Tasket" tells the story of a young girl carrying a green and yellow basket containing a letter she wrote to her love. What happened to her basket?

Answer: She dropped it

Another visual imagery song that sticks in my head.
Ella Fitzgerald, along with Al Feldman, turned this children's rhyme into a jazz piece, which became her breakthrough hit in 1938 with the Chuck Webb Orchestra.
3. An old Spiritual known as "When the Chariot Comes" most likely became the inspiration for this lively tune. Tell us what "She'll Be Coming Around"?

Answer: the Mountain

Southern slaves were heard singing a religious song whose lyrics began, "King Jesus, he'll be driver when she comes, when she comes..." That song was noted, referenced and changed to "Coming Around the Mountain".
As a child I could easily picture the six white horses bringing "Her", as well as taste the chicken and dumplings we'd all have.
4. "My Grandfather's Clock", a Lawrence Welk Show favorite, was sung in which musical range?

Answer: Bass

While staying at the George Hotel in North Yorkshire England, American songwriter Henry Clay Work noticed a large wooden clock that wasn't working. He was told that the hotel had been owned by two brothers and when the first brother died, the clock started losing time. When the second brother died, the clock stopped completely. This info inspired the story for the song Henry Clay Work later wrote and is partially credited for how the "Grandfather Clock" was named.
Children around the world loved the image of a personified old clock ticking, then stopping. I did, for one.
5. Of the choices given in the song "Swinging on a Star" (Would You Like to Swing on a Star?") what might you be turned into?

Answer: Pig

"Swinging on a Star" has been sung by Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and many other wonderful talents. The one I remember hearing is Perry Como. Although the lyrics state the line, "Carry moonbeams home in a jar", I thought the words were, "Kerry moonbeam's home in a jar". That was one funny image!
6. Speaking of Stars, let's move into our teen years with the song "I've Told Every Little Star". With recording artist Linda Scott, it reached number three on the U.S. pop charts in 1961. Besides the star, who else did Linda Scott reveal her love to?

Answer: Ripples or fishies

The lyrics to "I've Told Every Little Star" were written by Oscar Hammerstein II; music written by Jerome Kern.
7. Dinah Shore sang "High Hopes" in the early sixties, encouraging us to keep trying just like the Funny Old Ant and Silly Ole Ram. What did the ant want to move? Think rubber bands and horticulture.

Answer: A rubber tree plant

Dinah Shore proved to be much like that ant and ram; after having been rejected to sing with multiple big names, she took out on her own to become a successful solo artist.
8. Betty Johnson sang a creepily funny song that was recorded by Atlanta Records in 1957. Who was the unwanted visitor whose, "I Wuv You"'s, about drove her looney?

Answer: The Little Blue Man

Wasn't this song a hoot?! Betty Johnson was a regular on Jack Parr's "Tonight Show". This could have been the link that made her known to Atlanta Records.
9. 1965 brought us The Supremes singing, "Stop in the Name of Love". What would happen if the Lover didn't stop?

Answer: He'd break my heart

The Supremes had 12 Number One Hits in the U.S. And 33 in the Top 40.
10. Where did Martha and the Vandellas encourage us to dance?

Answer: In the street

Martha Reeves was born in Alabama in 1941. She took voice lessons from Abraham Silverson, who also coached Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson of the Supremes. In 1961, she was hired as secretary for Motown Records. Her bosses had heard her sing with friends Roselind Ashford and Annette Beard, so when backup singers were needed asap, Martha, Roselind, and Annette answered the call.

I have fond memories of my girlfriend and I singing this and dancing at the intersection of her street and mine. Gotta love the 60s!
