Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is considered to be the "brains" behind the group?

Answer: Tom Scholz

Tom Scholz was a keyboardist playing for any band he could in the Boston area while he attended MIT. Barry Goudreau was the lead guitarist of a group called Mother's Milk and asked Tom to play with them. Tom then learned to play guitar during this time and began writing songs.

After graduating from MIT he landed a job with Polaroid. In his spare time, he built a 12 track mixer and began recording some of his music with the help of drummer Jim Masdea. Finding the right vocal talent proved to be a problem until he found the late Brad Delp.

After a couple of years of shopping the demo tapes around, Tom found a record company willing to sign him. Epic Records wanted Tom and the rest of his band to re record the songs in Epic's Los Angeles studios. Tom felt that the tapes were fine the way they were since he had spent hours upon hours fine tuning them. Eventually, Brad, Barry, bassist Fran Sheehan and new drummer Sib Hashian did go to L. A. and recorded a song for show. Meanwhile Tom continued to tinker with the original tapes.

It was the demo tapes which made up most of the original debut album, simply titled "Boston". Except for Tom, none of the original members appear on all of the albums.
2. The Boston debut album was the best selling debut album until whose debut album supplanted it?

Answer: Whitney Houston

The debut album, simply titled "Boston" has sold over 17 million copies according to "Billboard" magazine.
3. Who does all of the vocals on the first album?

Answer: Brad Delp

Brad Delp did all of the vocals on "Boston" as well as on "Don't Look Back" and "Third Stage". He was working on another project with Barry Goudreau when "Walk On" was being produced. Speculation has it that they were lip synching everything because they sounded too much like their albums and you can't sing lead, background and harmony vocals at the same time. Kimberley Dahme did various vocals on "Corporate America" including a song of her own. David Sykes played bass and did do some vocals at one time or another and Fran Cosmo did vocals for the fourth album "Walk On" and shared vocals with the late Brad Delp on the sixth album "Corporate America". Brad was found dead in his house on Mar 9, 2007.

A long time sufferer of depression, it was determined that he took his own life.
4. How many songs were recorded in the Epic Records studio?

Answer: One

In an interesting deviation from what was normal, after Tom Scholz managed to garner enough interest in his demo tapes, the Epic chiefs wanted Boston to recreate their unique sound in the studio. Tom had spent hundreds of hours perfecting the demos and felt they would be sufficient for the album.

The original producer agreed, in part, with Tom and managed to snooker the studio executives by flying the other four members of the band to LA where they looked busy in studio recording "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" while Tom finished up the demos at the Hideaway Studio.
5. Who was the first female to be a member of Boston?

Answer: Kimberley Dahme

Kimberley Dahme joined the band in 2003. The first female of the group, she has her own country career, but had also worked in a Boston cover band. When she was asked to join the band, she had to learn to play bass to do it. She does sing a song of her own on the "Corporate America" album entitled "With You" where she also plays acoustic guitar. Additionally she does some lead and harmony vocals on the album as well. Kelly Rowland performed with Destiny's Child. Louise Ciccone is the birth name of Madonna. Jennifer Warnes is half of the duet that did the love theme for "Dirty Dancing".
6. Who did Tom Scholz marry in early 2007?

Answer: Kim Hart

There was a lot of speculation that Tom Scholz and Kimberley Dahme were a couple. There were a lot of publicity photos where she's standing next to him and he has his arm around her. Whether they were together or not at any given time, he married Kim Hart. The other two Kims I made up.
7. Officially, did Boston use a synthesizer at any time?

Answer: No

Tom Scholz remains adamant that he did not use a synthesizer on any Boston song. I find it hard to believe, especially after listening to track 3 on the first album, "Foreplay/Longtime". Tom contends that he used a "special effects guitar". On the "Corporate America" album he makes the following comment in the liner notes, "The air raid siren is not a synth: it's a modified Hammond B3" organ. Ok, if you modify a Hammond B3 organ the way he did, it's a synthesizer in my book.
8. One of the ways their unique sound is created is by having 2 guitarists perform the same riffs at the same time. Tom Scholz was one of them. Who has been the second guitarist since 1985?

Answer: Gary Pihl

Gary Pihl had previously played for Sammy Hagar before joining "Boston" in 1985. Neal Schon was best known for playing with "Journey". Craig Chaquico was best known for his work with "Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship". And Steve Howe was best known for playing with "Yes" and "Asia".
9. Which of the following did NOT play drums for "Boston"?

Answer: David Sikes

David Sikes played bass guitar for the "Third Stage" tour and was instrumental (pardon the pun) in some of the songs for the "Walk On" album. He also did vocals on two songs from the "Greatest Hits" album, "Tell Me" and "Higher Power". Doug Huffman and Curly Smith are past members. Jeff Neal is the current drummer.
10. What was the song they played at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl that also appears on the "Greatest Hits" album?

Answer: The Star Spangled Banner

They played the National Anthem of the United States, "The Star Spangled Banner" at the 2003 Fiesta Bowl.
