Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the line: "Waltzing on top of the ...."

Answer: world

"Waltzing on top of the world" is also the title of the song. This sounds like an early country-style song rather than the smooth Nashville sound that emerged later. It celebrates happiness and love and how it comes with the first recognition of true love.
2. Complete the line: "Don't ask me -"

Answer: why

It's all about the inexplicable nature of love. No matter how badly he is treated by the woman, he will go on loving her. In spite of her "schemes and lies" he will still be there. He just can't help himself or explain why he loves her. So the title "Don't Ask Me Why" fits very well.
3. Complete the line: "There are no roses in the -"

Answer: snow

"And I'll Stop Loving You." He lists all the impossible things he can think of. There are no daisies in the desert and there are no roses in the snow. It's just as impossible for him to stop loving her. There are other songs which use similar titles, such as those by Ray Charles and Roy Orbison, but the lyrics and tunes are different.
4. Complete the line: "From a jack to a -"

Answer: king

"From a Jack to a King" is again the title of this song. Life and love are compared to a card game in this song recorded by Jim and many others. He plays "an ace" because he is encouraged by the "twinkle" in her eyes.
5. Complete the line: "I'll just live my life in dreams of -"

Answer: yesterday

"I Can't Stop Loving You..." - another standard recorded by many artists like Roy Orbison. It's another one where Jim puts across the pain of being unable to forget. He has to live in dreams of yesterday.
6. Complete the line: "I'll gaze into your eyes -"

Answer: divine

"That's What I Desire" is the song in which this lyric occurs. Is he in the middle of a relationship or is he just remembering what it used to be like?
7. Complete the line: "See the market place in old -"

Answer: Algiers

"You Belong to Me" was also recorded by Patsy Cline. She too sang about flying the ocean "in a silver plane". There are also "the Pyramids along the Nile" and "the jungle when it's wet with rain".
8. Complete the line: "I'll stop loving you until -"

Answer: the next time

Poor Jim is being betrayed once more. He hides her picture, he puts away the records they listened to together, but nothing does any good. He will always give her another chance. "Until the Next Time" is a good title for this endless circle of events.
9. Complete the line: "We both reached for -"

Answer: heaven

The song "When Two Worlds Collide" suggests that, though they love each other, they come from different backgrounds. He has just realised that their love is doomed. He still regards her as belonging to a world which is "sweet and good".
10. Complete the line: "Remember to name one -- for me "

Answer: muchacho

"Adios Amigo" is about the parting of two friends who have fallen in love with the same girl. Jim sings the part of the one who is resigned to being the loser.
11. Complete the line: "I love you most of all because you're -"

Answer: you

This is the ultimate song of happiness- "I Love You Because." He lists all the reasons why she makes him happy. In the face of all that the world can say about him, her love will always "see him through".
12. Complete the line: "I'll be waiting here with my arms -"

Answer: unfurled

"Welcome to My World". Perhaps it is sung to a particular woman, but perhaps it is for all those who like to share in his style of music.
13. Complete the line: "And you'll always be -"

Answer: the only love I ever knew

"I'll forget many things in my lifetime but, darling, I won't forget you." She will be "the only love I ever knew" for Jim. It's somehow inevitable but it's deeply rewarding. "I Won't Forget You" is the title of several other country songs, including a different one sung by Patsy Cline.
14. Complete the line: "Tonight we've reached the hour we set for -"

Answer: parting

It hurts so much to see her go. He can't understand why this parting has to take place. He just knows that the love they knew has somehow disappeared. There's nothing left to say. "It Hurts So Much to See You Go" is a typical Jim Reeves ballad.
15. Complete the line: "that he's king while he sits there in -"

Answer: my chair

"I Won't Come in While He's There" is the title of the song. Everything has changed - someone else is in his place. Now Jim sings the part of the man about to leave town. He can't even bear to ring the doorbell in order to say goodbye.
16. Complete the line: "I always get lost on a -"

Answer: detour

This clever lyric about the "Highway to Nowhere" records the sadness and frustration of the man who just can't find his way to the heart of the woman that he loves. He ends the song where he began "back where he started".
17. Complete the line: "My darling, I'm telling you -"

Answer: now

"Have I Told You Lately I Love You..." is another song recorded by many artists. He is determined to say the words that are often left unsaid because we take people for granted.
18. Complete the line: "But now I'm down to my -"

Answer: last dime

"I've Lived a Lot in My Time." This is another real country-sounding song rather than "smooth Nashville". There is a strong religious theme to the experiences that he is describing.
19. Complete the line: "afraid I'll see my old -"

Answer: sweetheart

"If Heartache is the Fashion" is a very sad song. He's lost her and it has totally destroyed his confidence and now he won't even dare to go out. When he thinks of her lips on someone else's it causes him deep pain.
20. Complete the line: "Every day is blue -"

Answer: Monday

"How's the World Treating You?" He thinks about her constantly. He tells of how terrible he feels, but he also asks how she feels. He wants to know if there's still any hope but really his tone tells you that there isn't.
