Kishore Kumar was born on 4th August 1929 in Khandwa in Madhya Pradesh, India to Kunjalal Ganguly and Gouri Devi. Kishore's elder brother was known in the Hindi film industry as Ashok Kumar and was a well-established star. Abhas Ganguly took the name of Kishore Kumar.

He got his first break from music director Khemchand Prakash in 1948 in the movie 'Ziddi'. Apart from his singing career, he also acted in movies and made his debut as a hero in the movie 'Andolan' in 1951. In later years, he was known as a comic hero and acted in hit movies like 'Asha', 'Chalti Ka Naam Ghadi' and 'Half Ticket'.
