Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lionel didn't begin his career as a solo artist - he was a member of a soul band. But can you name that band?

Answer: The Commodores

The Commodores were almost as popular as Lionel Richie himself, but Lionel went on to eclipse the success of the band who he was the lead singer of until 1982, when he began a hugely successful solo career.
2. "Three Times A Lady" was first performed by Lionel Richie.

Answer: False

Trick question! The misconception of many people is that Lionel Richie released and performed "Three Times A Lady" during his solo career, but the song was actually written by Lionel and performed/released by The Commodores in 1978.
3. Which of the following is the missing word - "_____ _____ don't you walk on by, _____ _____ don't you make me cry"?

Answer: Penny Lover

"Penny Lover" was a slow, romantic song with some beautiful, thought-provoking lyrics. It did not reach Number 1 in the US, but had huge success in the UK.
4. Which fairy-tale character has Lionel Richie written and performed a song about?

Answer: Cinderella

"Cinderella" was another classic, romantic Lionel song, which again did not have the same success in the US as it achieved in the UK. Lionel later admitted that this song was written about and for his former wife, Brenda Harvey.
5. Which disco hit, known for it's 80's bad dancing and crazy clothing contained in the video, was a US number one for four weeks in 1983?

Answer: All Night Long

I cringe when I look back on the video for "All Night Long" now, but I suppose everyone danced like that in the 80's! Bad dancing and crazy clothes aside, "All Night Long" will probably be the song Lionel Richie is most remembered for.
6. With whom did Lionel Richie duet with for the 1981 hit "Endless Love"?

Answer: Diana Ross

"Endless Love", sung by Lionel Richie and Diana Ross in 1983, was a US number one for nine weeks and enjoyed similar success in the UK. It was later covered by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey.
7. In 1977, Lionel Richie and The Commodores had a chart hit with "Easy". But can you remember which day was mentioned in the chorus of the song?

Answer: Sunday

"Easy like Sunday morning"

Somewhat ridiculously, "Easy" only reached number nine in the UK Singles Chart and is my favourite Lionel/Commodores song of the lot.
8. Throughout his career, Lionel Richie showed just how musically diverse he is, churning out ballads, funk, R&B and disco songs. Can you fill in the blank in the title of his up-tempo hit in 1986 - "Dancing On The _______"?

Answer: Ceiling

Another Lionel classic, "Dancing On The Ceiling" is still played at weddings and birthday discos today and is generally popular with anyone who lived through the 1980's disco era.
9. A Lionel Richie song was featured on a "Grand Theft Auto" video Game.

Answer: True

"Running With The Night" was featured in "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" following the game's release in 2002, but was removed from later versions of the game.
10. From which US state does Lionel hail from?

Answer: Alabama

Lionel was born in Tuskegee, Alabama on June 20th, 1949. He later moved to Illinois, where he graduated from Joliet Township High School. Choosing not to move into the area of economics (which he later gained a Major in) Lionel eventually became the lead singer and saxophonist of his first group (The Commodores) in 1968. He went on to become one of the world's most renown soul and R&B singer of his generation.

Hope you have enjoyed my quiz on one of my favourite artists and I hope that it has given you an insight into the life and career of one of the best voices of the 70's and 80's. Most of all, I hope you share my high opinion of him!
