Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1961, a mysterious lineup of Los Angeles session musicians called B. Bumble & The Stingers burst onto the scene with the instrumental "Bumble Boogie", which peeked at #21. What was their "nutty" 1962 follow-up?

Answer: Nut Rocker

This instrumental group never publicly admitted to their actual lineup, and many theories abound about their actual membership. It mattered little, however, as "Nut Rocker" ended it's 7-week chart run at #23 and the band never cracked the Top 40 again.
2. In October, The Belmonts had their second - and last - Top 40 hit with "Come On Little Angel". Which singer did they back from 1957-1960?

Answer: Dion

The Belmonts, from the Bronx, NY, were Angelo D'Aleo, Fred Milano and Carlo Mostrangelo. Although Dion went on to a long, successful solo career, "Come On Little Angel" stalled at #28 after an 8-week chart run. Their first release, "Tell Me Why", only did slightly better peaking at #18 in 1961.
3. Character actor Walter Brennan had two spoken word hits in 1962, the classic "Old Rivers" and "Mama Sang A Song". Who sang backing vocals on both songs?

Answer: The Johnny Mann Singers

Billy Vaughn & His Orchestra also hooked up with Brennan in 1960 for "Dutchman's Gold", which peeked at #30. "Old Rivers" remains his biggest hit, topping off at #5. He was 68 years old at the time of his last hit, making him one of the oldest artists to hit the Top 40.
4. Instrumentalist Ace Cannon had his only two hits in 1962, "Tuff", which peaked at #17 and "Blues (Stay Away From Me)", which stalled at #36. What instrument did he play?

Answer: saxophone

Cannon, who was born in Grenada, Mississippi, performed with Bill Black's Combo on several occasions.
5. In 1962, the California group The Castells hit #21 with their second and final Top 40 hit, "So This Is Love". Vocalist Chuck Girard promptly left the group to become lead singer of what beach music group?

Answer: The Hondells

The Hondells, which included guitarist Glen Campbell, had one Top 10 hit "Little Honda."
6. Keyboardist Dave Cortez, scored his second and final hit in 1962 with "Rinky Dink", the follow up to "The Happy Organ", a #1 smash in 1959. What was Cortez's young-sounding nickname?

Answer: Baby

Dave "Baby" Cortez was born in Detroit. Both of his hits were instrumentals.
7. Following up "Wooden Heart", his #1 smash from a year earlier, Joe Dowell had a hit about a little rented rowboat in 1962. What color was it?

Answer: red

"Little Red Rented Rowboat" peaked at #23 and was the last time Dowell would score a hit. Amazing, since his version of "Wooden Heart" outperformed Elvis's, which never charted.
8. 1962 was a great musical year for singer/actress Shelley Fabares, as her debut single rocketed straight to the top and its follow-up rose to #21. What was the name of the angel who she loved and loved her back?

Answer: Johnny

She may have listened to a story about a man named Jed, but she loved her Johnny Angel. Unfortunately, listeners tired of hearing about Johnny, and Shelley never scored a hit again. She did, however, have a successful career on the big screen and on TV.
9. After climbing all the way to #3 with her debut song "The Big Hurt" in 1959, what female singer returned to the charts in 1962 with "West Of The Wall," her second and final hit?

Answer: Toni Fisher

"West Of The Wall" was inspired by the Berlin Wall crisis of 1961 and only peaked at #37 for a one-week chart run. Despite a great start and the promise of great things to come, the Los Angeles born singer never charted again.
10. Stan Getz, another instrumentalist, blew onto the scene in 1962 with "Desafinado", a Top 15 hit performed with Charlie Byrd. What instrument did Getz play?

Answer: saxophone

Getz would score even bigger in 1964 with the classic "The Girl From Ipanema", which topped off at #5 and featured Astrud Gilberto on vocals. It was his last Top 40 hit.
