Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1964, the Four Seasons had a number one hit with a song about my second cousin once-removed; what was the name of this popular song?

Answer: Ragdoll

"Ragdoll" was a number one hit in both the U.S. and England. So popular was the melody that it was remade in 1967 by the English band The Tremeloes. In 1988 the American hard rock group released a song with the same name but different lyrics and melody. What can I say...my cousin, the rag doll, is very popular!
2. In 1943, The Mills Brothers had the number one song for twelve weeks with their song about my Aunt Hildegaard who was which kind of two dimensional doll?

Answer: Paper doll

For three months the song "Paper Doll" stayed at the top of the Billboard charts as the most popular song in the country. The song is listed in the Grammy Hall of Fame and the single sold over ten million copies world-wide. Aunt Hildegaard said the tribute was wonderful, it gave her the big head, and she started to try and argue that she was actually three-dimensional. Which, owing to the fact that paper does have thickness, albeit not much, I guess that she is correct.
3. My youngest sister was the topic of which of these hit songs by Del & The Escorts in 1961?

Answer: Baby Doll

My youngest sister Baby Doll really gets around. Del & The Escorts are not the only group to sing a song to her. Other groups singing her praise include Mariah Carey in 1997, Devo in 1988 and N*E*R*D in 2001. All have released a song with the title "Baby Doll".
4. "Doll on a Music Box" was about my sister-in-law's first cousin Anna, and was first performed in which 1968 children's musical?

Answer: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

"Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" was a children's musical based on novelist Ian Fleming's novel of the same name. One of the characters is named Truly Scrumptious and while singing this song she is on a pedestal dressed as a music box dancer. It is a lamentation about her rigidness and the facade behind which she hides. It does remind me of my family member.
5. What is the nomadic sounding name for the back-up group for Cliff Richard in his 1959 song about my mother called "Living Doll"?

Answer: The Drifters

Cliff Richard and the Drifters released "Living Doll" in 1959. The song went to the top of the charts. In 1986 Cliff Richard re-recorded a comic version of the song for the charity Comic Relief. The song has sold over three million copies worldwide.
6. My cousin, the kewpie doll, was the object of a 1958 song by which award-winning crooner?

Answer: Perry Como

"Kewpie Doll" was recorded by Perry Como in 1958. British singer Frankie Vaughn also released his rendition of the song the same year. The song is about a trip to the carnival and the winning of a Kewpie doll after winning a carnival game. As my cousin likes to point out, both renditions of the song were very popular at the time.
7. Released in 1997, "Barbie Girl" is the signature song of the Scandinavian dance-pop group Aqua. (I think they were inspired by my best friend Barbie doll, after she made a visit to Denmark on spring break.)

Answer: True

Released in 1997 "Barbie Girl" was released as a single and is on the groups first album "Aquarium". The song is about the Barbie and Ken dolls produced by Mattel. The company promptly sued saying that the song depicted Barbie as a sex object and insinuated that she had inappropriate relations with her boyfriend Ken. Because this argument might sound silly to some, the also sued for copyright infringement.

The case was taken all the way to the supreme court, where Mattel lost their case, as the song is considered a parody.
8. In 1968 edition of the Ed Sullivan Show, the British rock group The Rolling Stones sang a song about me, called "Trivia Doll".

Answer: False

This is definitely, completely, totally, and absolutely false. I am still waiting for a musical group to be inspired enough by the trivia dolls of the world to sing a song about all of us!
9. In 2009, which Grammy Award winning singer released her SECOND album called "Epiphany" which included a song about my daughter called "Porcelain Doll"?

Answer: Chrisette Michele

"Porcelain Doll" is the 11th song on Chrisette Michele's 2009 album "Epiphany". The song is a plea to be treated like a capable, intelligent, mature woman instead of a delicate, breakable porcelain doll. It is a request for respect. It mirrors the requests made by teenage girls to their parents all over the world.

They don't seem to understand that they will always be our porcelain dolls.
10. In 2002, the British indie rock group, Boyracer, released which song about my godmother who was made by a Hopi Indian?

Answer: Kachina Doll

Boyracer included the song "Kachina Doll" on their twelfth album, which was titled "To Get a Better Hold You've Got To Loosen Your Grip". Kachina dolls are not toys, they are depictions of the masked spirits important to the Hopi Indian culture. My godmother is an unusual soul, so it is fitting that this unusual musical group sang about this unusual doll.
