Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Swedish band has brought us such hits as "Hearts on Fire," "Last Man Standing," and "Any Means Necessary." Who is this band?

Answer: Hammerfall

Hammerfall has been releasing power metal music since 1997 and has been consistent in the quality of its songs ever since. "Hearts on Fire", "Last Man Standing", and "By Any Means Necessary" are three of their numerous music videos, which generally consist of a very energetic performance of the song.
2. Which rather controversial power metal band began releasing music in 2000 and has released such albums as "Sonic Firestorm" and "Ultra Beatdown?"

Answer: Dragonforce

Dragonforce is among the most popular power metal, especially in America, but it appears to be one of those "love it or hate it" bands. Still, there are evidently enough people who love it for Dragonforce to be extremely successful, with hit singles such as "Through the Fire and Flames" and "Heroes of Our Time."
3. Which German group began in the mid-1980s and has been releasing power metal albums such as "Imaginations from the Other Side" ever since?

Answer: Blind Guardian

Blind Guardian's albums are many and long, usually at least an hour in length; the band's faithful release of an album every 2-4 years since 1986 makes it one of the most prolific power metal bands around.
4. The well-loved power metal band Stratovarius began releasing music in the late 1980s. From what country does Stratovarius hail?

Answer: Finland

Stratovarius, along with many other power metal bands, are from Finland. From 1989 to 2005, they released twelve studio albums, perhaps more than any other power metal band in history. Although the band changed dramatically in 2008 with the loss of their lead guitarist and songwriter from the beginning, Timo Tolkki, they don't appear to be letting up on their releases any time soon.
5. Which of the following power metal bands is not from Europe?

Answer: Kamelot

Kamelot is actually one of the few successful power metal bands from the United States, although it fits right in with European bands of their genre such as British Dragonforce, German Edguy, and Finnish Dreamtale.
6. This Swedish band changed vocalists from 2003 to 2005 but switched back to the original singer for their later releases. This band has released two music videos: one, "Emotional Skies", with its temporary vocalist; and another, "Carnival of Disgust", with its original and current vocalist. Who is this band?

Answer: Falconer

Falconer, containing remnants of the viking metal band, Mithotyn, began releasing music in 2001 with vocalist Mathias Blad, who was replaced by Kristoffer Gobel in 2003 because he didn't have time to tour very much. However, the band requested Blad's return in 2005 for a new upcoming album, and he accepted, still being with the band to this day.
7. This Finnish band draws lyrics almost exclusively from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Which band, perhaps more a mixture of death metal and symphonic metal than true power metal, although it still contains distinct power metal elements, has released songs such as "House of Heroes" and "Sons of Riddermark?"

Answer: Battlelore

Battlelore, which has been said to draw from several genres, power metal included, gives a listener the unique mix of harsh death growls with high, soft female vocals. It has been serenading the metal world since 2002.
8. Which band, founded by ex-Stratovarius guitarist and vocalist Timo Tolkki, has featured members such as ex-Helloween vocalist Michael Kiske, Edguy vocalist Tobias Sammet, and ex-Thunderstone vocalist Pasi Rantanen?

Answer: Revolution Renaissance

Revolution Renaissance began in 2008 with the album "New Era", but didn't achieve a permanent lineup until recording 2009's "Age of Aquarius". Revolution Renaissance has been fairly unique in its all-star power metal cast of musicians. The only other notable power metal project of this caliber is Northern Kings.
9. This somewhat obscure band has had a different vocalist with each of its first four albums, as well as various guest vocalists scattered throughout. Which Scandinavian is perhaps most famous for its 2003 release, "Ocean's Heart," and has released just one music video, for 2008's "Take What the Heavens Create?"

Answer: Dreamtale

Dreamtale's first album, "Beyond Reality," featured Marco Hietala of Nightwish and Tarot as guest vocalist, alongside Rami Keranen, who has been in the band ever since but only did vocals on the first album. Since then, Dreamtale has had an absurd number of vocalists, but continues to play the same style of music, the one and only power metal!
10. Name the aforementioned power metal band by the following lyrics: "I didn't know, I couldn't hear the answer...my mind was blank, I should have known."

Answer: Blind Guardian

That particular line is taken from Blind Guardian's single "Another Stranger Me," from their 2006 album "A Twist in the Myth."
