Question 2 of 10
2. "Understand. We're fighting a war we can't win. They hate us - We hate them. We can't win no way. Walk down the street. I flip them off. They hit me across the head. With a billy club." What 'bad vibe merchants' uttered these hopeless words, and in what song? Hint

Question 3 of 10

4. "Ever live a life that's real. Full of zest, but no appeal. Ever want to cry so much. You want to die. Ever feel that you've been had. Had so much that you turn mad. Ever been depressed that - to those you turn to, you bring distress." What intensely intense band sang these lyrics? Hint

Question 5 of 10

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What song by a radical punk rock band is this: "You say, 'God loves you. Come and buy the Good News'. Then you buy the president and swimming pools. If Jesus don't save 'til we're lining your pockets. God must be dead if you're alive."

Answer: "Moral Majority" - Dead Kennedys

"Moral Majority" appeared on the mini album "In God We Trust; Inc.", which also featured "Religious Vomit", a cool version of the "Rawhide" theme and their firm stance about Nazi Punks. Shame the memory of the Dead Kennedys got so desecrated by the band, by reforming with a soap star singer replacement for Jello Biafra. They surely are the 'goons of hazard', indeed.
2. "Understand. We're fighting a war we can't win. They hate us - We hate them. We can't win no way. Walk down the street. I flip them off. They hit me across the head. With a billy club." What 'bad vibe merchants' uttered these hopeless words, and in what song?

Answer: "Police Story" - Black Flag

Black Flag were often harassed by cops, not only when they played a show in L.A., but also when they were hanging around, minding their own business. That's what being a punk rocker was about in the late 70s/ early 80s - you had to deal with a lot of prejudice. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Or, a few bumps on the head from a night stick never hurt nobody ...
3. What incredibly cool band sang these lyrics? "Insulation in my circulation. I'm a mating rhythm. Sick with electrocution. Nazi operation. Devestation. Wire up a radio - and I am a mating rhythm. Wire up the radio - turn the terror and find my limit."

Answer: "Hot Wire My Heart" - Crime

Crime, or 'San Francisco's Doomed', as they were also known, used to dress up as police men. And not only for gigs. They walked around in those uniforms all the time. There's some footage of them playing a gig at San Quentin prison, where they're playing in full gear while being cheered on by inmates carrying plackards reading 'Crime Rules'! Cool or what? The song "Hot Wire My Heart" was covered by Sonic Youth, on their "Sister" (1987) album.
4. "Ever live a life that's real. Full of zest, but no appeal. Ever want to cry so much. You want to die. Ever feel that you've been had. Had so much that you turn mad. Ever been depressed that - to those you turn to, you bring distress." What intensely intense band sang these lyrics?

Answer: "Ever" - Flipper"

Fun fact: Moby once temped in this legendary hardcore band. In a 1999 interview he explains how: "It lasted for two days. I was sixteen years old - so that would have been '82. They played two shows in Connecticut. This was when "Generic" was out. Singer Will Shatter had been thrown in Jail. So they could only do half the set. Before the show I recognized Bruce Loose and offered to write down the lyrics of Will's songs for him because I had them memorized.

In the anarchic Flipper style, he said: "Why don't you sing them yourself"? So for two nights, I sang Will's songs for Flipper." Musta been the high point of his career.
5. Which well-meaning boys sang these words? "Early man walked away as modern man took control. Their minds weren't all the same, to conquer was his big goal. So he built his great empire and slaughtered his own kind. Then he died a confused man, killed himself with his own mind."

Answer: "We're Only Gonna Die From Our Own Arrogance" - Bad Religion

This song was on Bad Religion's debut full length album, "How Could Hell Be Any Worse" (1982). The record label Epitaph was started by guitar player Brett Gurewitz, so Bad Religion could release their records. In 1993 Bad Religion released their first album on a major label, "Recipe For Hate" on Atlantic.

The second album for Atlantic, "Stranger Than Fiction", was also the last one with Gurewitz on guitar, until 2001 when he rejoined.
6. "Let's have a war! Jack up the Dow Jones! Let's have a war! It can start in New Jersey! Let's have a war! Blame it on the middle-class! Let's have a war! We're like rats in a cage!" What sarcastic ditty was this?

Answer: "Let's Have A War" - Fear

Fear was founded in L.A., in 1977. In '78 they released their debut single, "I Love Livin' in the City", but it wasn't until 1982 that they released a full length. In 1984 Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea played with them for a while, but he didn't record with them.
7. "Hot cherry on Friday night. When the sun goes down my spine. I put an axe in my baby's head. I'm gonna end up doing time. She looks so good in red." What pleasant little ditty is this?

Answer: "American Nightmare" - The Misfits

It was once legend that the Misfits only played on Halloween. They formed in 1977 and in 1983 singer Glenn Danzig disbanded them. This would mean they only played live 6 times. Bit of an urban legend, methinks. Glenn Danzig later formed Samhain and after that the band called Danzig.

In 1996 bass player Jerry Only and his younger brother Doyle reformed the Misfits, with a different singer. They weren't as good.
8. What satirical band sang these lyrics? "Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth?"

Answer: "Reagan Knew" - Mucky Pup

The full lyrics to "Reagan Knew" went as follows: "Reagan knew, Reagan knew. Ron told North just what to do. Our Government lied, to hide the truth. Ron told Ollie, "We'll shred the truth" Oliver North was set-up, and all of congress knew it. Yeah, Ollie North was set-up, and guess who made him do it? Mr. President I know you knew. Do you think I'm as dumb as you? A word to the wise, Oh what should we do? Take that shredder and throw Ronnie through! Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth? Why don't you stop lying and just tell us the truth?" Yup, a poignant observation about "Irangate". You can find this song on Mucky Pup's "A Boy in a Man's World" (1989) album.
9. "A street with bodies, filled with guts. Child's world is such a mess. One bomb could rip this place apart. Yet who's to blame, where'd it start?" A stern warning from whom?

Answer: "What If There's War in America?" - 7 Seconds

7 Seconds was formed by singer Kevin Seconds. They released some 7"s, but I'm not too sure that's the main reason they chose their name.
10. These guys were obviously philosophers. Still, I get what they're saying. What song is this from: "Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday. Thursday. Friday. Saturday. Sunday. Aaargh!"

Answer: "Strange Week" - Hüsker Dü

This is probably the most melodic song on Hüsker Dü's breakneck speed debut album "Land Speed Record" (1981). This is probably one of the leanest, meanest hardcore punk albums. Where they got their melodies from, later in their career, nobody knows.
