Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who sang these lyrics: "Through the storm we reach the shore; you give it all but I want more. And I'm waiting for you, with or without you"?

Answer: U2

"With Or Without You", from the album "The Joshua Tree", originally released in 1987. This album also includes the tunes, "Where The Streets Have No Name", "In God's Country", and "Red Hill Mining Town". A Joshua tree (Yucca brevifolia) is a desert plant, indigenous to the Joshua Tree National Park in the Mohave Desert in California, also the home of other odd plants such as the Beavertail and Hedgehog cacti.
2. Who sang these lyrics: "I don't feel safe in this world no more. I don't want to die in a nuclear war. I want to sail away to a distant shore, and make like an apeman."?

Answer: The Kinks

"Apeman", from the album "Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One", originally released in 1970. This album also includes the tunes, "Rats", "Powerman", "Top Of The Pops", and "Lola". The character of Lola was a transvestite the singer met in a nightclub.

The character of Powerman is a record industry executive whose only goal is the almighty dollar. The Moneygoround is another of Ray Davies' shots at record industry executives and the parasites that feed off them.
3. Who sang these lyrics: "Seventy-three men sailed, up from San Francisco Bay; rolled off of their ship and here's what they had to say, 'We're calling everyone to ride along, to another shore. We can laugh our lives away and be free once more.'"?

Answer: Blues Image

"Ride Captain Ride", from the album "Open", originally released in 1970. This song was a one-hit wonder for a band out of Tampa, Florida. Blues Image formed in 1966, released two albums in their short-lived career, and were considered one of the founders of the Latin-based pop/rock sound which was later adapted by such bands as Santana, War, and El Chicano.
4. Who sang these lyrics: "Well, our fathers fought the Second World War, spent their weekends on the Jersey shore, met our mothers in the USO, asked them to dance, danced with them slow."?

Answer: Billy Joel

"Allentown", from the album "The Nylon Curtain", originally released in 1982. This album also includes the tunes, "Pressure", "Goodnight Saigon", and "She's Right On Time". Joel wrote "Allentown" with the town of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in mind. Bethlehem is only a few miles from Allentown. Joel thought that if he named the song "Bethlehem", it may get confused with a religious song, which obviously it was not.
5. Who sang these lyrics: "On board I'm the captain, so climb aboard. We'll search for tomorrow on every shore. And I'll try, oh Lord I'll try, to carry on."?

Answer: Styx

"Come Sail Away", from the album "The Grand Illusion", originally released in 1977. This album also includes the tunes, "Miss America", "Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)", and the title track. The band takes their name from the river Styx, which is the river of fire that surrounds Hades. Hundreds of years ago, it was common practice to place a coin under the tongue of a dead person before burial.

It was believed that Charon, the ferryboat driver, would keep the coin as payment for transporting the dead person across the river.
6. Who sang these lyrics: "On we sweep with threshing oar. Our only goal will be the western shore."?

Answer: Led Zeppelin

"Immigrant Song", from the album "Led Zeppelin III". This album also includes the tunes, "Tangerine", "Gallow's Pole", "Celebration Day", and "Out On The Tiles". Before releasing their first album, the four members of Led Zeppelin toured several European countries while calling themselves the New Yardbirds.
7. Who sang these lyrics: "Take it to the bridge, throw it overboard, see if it can swim back up to the shore. No one's in the house, everyone is out, all the lights are on and the blinds are down."?

Answer: Squeeze

"Hourglass", from the album "Babylon And On", originally released in 1987. This album also includes the tunes, "Footprints", "Splitting Into Three", and "Some Americans". Squeeze formed in London, England, in 1974. They are similar to Steely Dan, in the sense that the band basically consisted of the songwriting team of Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, and utilized numerous temporary and studio musicians.
8. Who sang these lyrics: "Walked out this morning, don't believe what I saw, a hundred billion bottles washed up on the shore. Seems I'm not alone at being alone. A hundred billion castaways looking for a home."?

Answer: The Police

"Message In A Bottle", from the album "Regatta de Blanc", originally released in 1979. This album also includes the tunes, "Walking On The Moon", "The Bed's Too Big Without You", and "Bring On The Night". The Police formed in Newcastle, England, in 1977, as Gordon Sumner (a.k.a. Sting) on vocals and bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stewart Copeland on drums. "Regatta de Blanc" was the band's second studio album.
9. Who sang these lyrics: "I have watched you on the shore, standing by the ocean's roar. Do you love me, do you, surfer girl?"?

Answer: The Beach Boys

"Surfer Girl", from the album of the same name, originally released in 1963. This album also includes the tunes, "Little Deuce Coupe", "Catch A Wave", and "Boogie Woodie". The Beach Boys formed in 1961, as Brian Wilson (guitar/keyboards), Carl Wilson (guitar/keyboards), Dennis Wilson (drums), David Marks (guitar), Al Jardine (bass), and Mike Love (saxophone). All six members also sang lead and background vocals.
10. It's time once again for the mystery word part of our quiz. Now, without going back to peek, tell me: What one word was used in each of the previous nine lyrics?

Answer: Shore

I love going to the shore, especially the one in Atlantic City. I love the summer weather, the lights from the casinos, wandering aimlessly up and down the boardwalk, watching the moonlight float gently over the ocean...all of this while being totally wired out, of course. Thanks for playing the quiz. Hope you all had fun.
