Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The song "Loser", was released in 1993 on Beck's debut album titled "Mellow Gold". The line "I'm a driver, I'm the winner; things are gonna change I can feel it" appears in the song. The line was taken from a movie. Can you name it?

Answer: Kill the Moonlight

All of these movies have one thing in common. They were all written by, directed or somehow utilized Steve Hanft. Hanft is a good friend of Beck's so the line from the movie "Kill the Moonlight" was featured in the song. In response, Hanft directed the video for "Loser".
2. This classic funk tune was the first number one hit for George Clinton and his band Parliament on the US Billboard Black Singles chart. Do you remember this 1977 release?

Answer: Flash Light

This song was originally recorded for a Bootsy Collins solo release, but Collins didn't particularly like the way the track sounded. Parliament keyboard player Bernie Worrell had been experimenting with sounds on his Moog synthesizer and he came up with a stacked bass tone that he really liked. When "Flash Light" was handed over to George Clinton, Worrell decided this would be the song he used his new bass sound on, creating an instant classic. The song was from one of the best named albums ever: "Funkentelechy Vs. the Placebo Syndrome".
3. This song was the very last song performed at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair in 1969. Can you remember that far back, or are your thoughts a little cloudy from the haze?

Answer: Hey Joe

Jimi Hendrix was the last artist to play at Woodstock, to a relatively small crowd because he didn't get to play until 9:00am on the last day of the festival. Most festival goers had already left the site before his performance.
4. Elvis Presley is responsible for the song at number 197 on this chart. The song "Don't Be Cruel" was written by bluesman Otis Blackwell and recorded by Elvis in 1956. The song was released as a single, with which equally famous song on the single's flip side?

Answer: Hound Dog

The combination of "Don't Be Cruel" and "Hound Dog" was the first release to have both sides of the single reach number one on Billboard's Pop, R&B and Country charts in the US. In fact, it's a feat that's never been matched. Otis Blackwell was a struggling song writer when he was given a chance to write full time.

His writing talents netted many hit songs including "Return to Sender", "All Shook Up" and "One Broken Heart for Sale" for Elvis. He also wrote the famous tune "Fever" for Peggy Lee.
5. This love song was written by a rock singer from Indiana for the daughter of a popular 1960s vocal duo. It was later covered by Sheryl Crow, and she even won a Grammy for her version. What song is it?

Answer: Sweet Child O' Mine

So maybe this was pretty easy if you knew that Axl Rose was a singer from Indiana who happened to be courting the daughter of Don Everly who was one half of the Everly Brothers.
All of the possible answers to the question are all Grammy award winning singles from Sheryl Crow.
6. The song at number 195 is titled "Maybe". Which girl group recorded this doo wop hit in 1957?

Answer: The Chantels

If you knew that The Passions, The Ravens and The Harptones were all men doo wop vocal groups, this may have been a bit easier for you. The Chantels were centered around Arlene Smith, who was a young New York teenager when the song "Maybe" was written and recorded in a church in Manhattan.
7. Buddy Holly's "Peggy Sue" didn't start with that title. What was the name originally used?

Answer: Cindy Lou

The name was changed in dedication to a young lady who was dating Jerry Allison, the drummer in Holly's backing band, The Crickets. Peggy Sue Gerron eventually married Allison, but they were divorced after an 11 year marriage.
8. The Drifters have had several men in their group to sing lead on different songs. Who was the lead vocalist on their hit "There Goes My Baby"?

Answer: Ben E. King

Many critics claim this is the first major pop hit to include full orchestration with a string section. By the time this tune was released, The Drifters were an entirely different group than the version that had been fronted by Clyde McPhatter. The song topped the Billboard's Black Singles chart in 1959 but could only reach number two on the Pop Singles chart in the US.
9. Glen Campbell had many hits with city names in the title. Which of these is the correct title?

Answer: Wichita Lineman

This song was written by Jimmy Webb after he saw a telephone lineman working alone somewhere out on the Kansas-Oklahoma border. Webb also wrote another song with a city in the title for Campbell, "By the Time I Get to Phoenix". Other city-titled songs by Campbell include: "Galveston", "Houston (I'm Coming to See You)" and "Hollywood Smiles".
10. Who has been to a live show in a bar or club and some yahoo is in the back screaming for "Freebird"? I know I have. The song is on our chart at number 191. This song was written as a tribute to a fallen musician. Who was it?

Answer: Duane Allman

When Duane Allman crashed his motorcycle in Macon, GA, the group Lynyrd Skynyrd were devastated when they learned the news. They wrote the song "Freebird" as a memorial to Duane. Just six years later, Lynyrd Skynyrd had a tragedy of their own when a plane crash took the lives of members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines along with their manager Dean Kilpatrick.
11. The song "Knocking on Heaven's Door" was written by Bob Dylan for a soundtrack he wrote for which movie?

Answer: Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid

The movie was shot in Mexico and Dylan was included in the film as an actor and as talent for the soundtrack. The movie starred James Coburn as Pat Garrett and Kris Kristofferson as Billy the Kid. The song "Knocking on Heaven's Door" was played during the scene where an aging Sheriff Pat Garrett is dying.
12. Many people remember that the characters portrayed by Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty had a fun dance scene in the movie "Airplane". Do you remember which song they were dancing to?

Answer: Stayin' Alive

The Bee Gees had great success with the release of the movie "Saturday Night Fever" in 1977. The disco craze was in full force and people were really into the club scene when the song was released. Folks forever branded the Bee Gees a disco act, a brand that the group never really embraced.
13. Many songs have the word "rain" in the title, but only this one was recorded by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Can you pick it out of the following songs?

Answer: Who'll Stop the Rain

In addition to "Who'll Stop the Rain", CCR also had another rain titled song, "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?". This song was one of the many Vietnam inspired songs written by John Fogerty.
"Fire and Rain" was from James Taylor.
"No Rain" was by Blind Melon.
"A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" is by Bob Dylan.
14. The song at number 187 on our chart is the title track from the first album released after Bon Scott's death. What is it?

Answer: Back in Black

All of these songs are title tracks for AC/DC albums, however only "Back in Black" was recorded after Bon Scott's alcohol induced death. The other three songs were all recorded with Scott on vocals.
15. "You're no good, heartbreaker You're a liar and you're a cheat..." Who sang these lyrics, the opening line to our song at 186?

Answer: Aretha Franklin

Of course, it's Aretha Franklin. Songwriter Ronny Shannon wrote this song specifically for Aretha's singing style and she literally blew him away with her rendition. This song is just one in a long list of songs recorded at Rick Hall's Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
16. This quiz wouldn't be complete if we didn't at least have a couple Bob Dylan songs included. This song is the only one included on the album "Highway 61 Revisited".

Answer: Desolation Row

"Desolation Row" tells the story of a young girl who was raped and murdered in Duluth, Minnesota while the circus was in town. The song was Dylan's longest recording to date at over 11 minutes in length. The song, which was never released as a single, was released in 1965.
17. If you know your Beatles history, you'll know this was the first song released by the band in the US. Do you remember the name of the song?

Answer: Please Please Me

"Please Please Me" was released on VeeJay records, but it didn't exactly light up the charts or create much of a buzz. Then, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was released and it really took off, much to the delight of every music listener at the time. The Beatles then re-released "Please Please Me" and it was a hit, reaching number three on the Billboard Pop Charts in the US. John Lennon has openly admitted that he was trying to copy the Roy Orbison sound when he recorded the vocals for this tune.
18. "The Thrill is Gone" is B.B. King's signature song, the song that most fans identify him with. Many people believe that Mr. King was the writer and original recording artist for this song. That would be incorrect. Who was the writer of this song?

Answer: Roy Hawkins

Legend has it that when B.B. King was a radio personality in Memphis in the early 1950s, he would play the relatively obscure Roy Hawkins hit. He had a real love for the song and would sing the song in the studio over the recording. Unfortunately for Roy Hawkins, he never received any royalties for the B.B. King version of the song due to an error in the credits.

As a matter of fact, Hawkins had a very bad run of things in his life. Midway through his career, he lost use of one of his arms, a terrible thing for a piano player. Poor management and accounting left him penniless. Eventually he was forced into a homeless existence in the Oakland, CA area where he died alone and poor in 1973.
19. "Save the Last Dance for Me" was written by the duo of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller for The Drifters. Other Leiber and Stoller classics include "Jailhouse Rock", "Spanish Harlem" and "On Broadway".

Answer: False

Well, almost. Everything in this is true except the fact that "Save the Last Dance for Me" was written for The Drifters by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. There has always been a rumor floating around music circles that a very young Phil Spector was involved in the song writing process as well, but he has always been uncredited with his involvement with this recording.
20. Booker T. and the MG's were a studio house band for which record label when they recorded the song "Green Onions"?

Answer: Stax

Booker T. Jones was the keyboardist and Steve Cropper was the guitarist of this group of talented session artists who came up with the lick for "Green Onions". The group was in the studio awaiting a session with Billy Lee Riley when they were delayed.

In their downtime, they laid down the basic tracks for the instrumental. When asked why they decided on the title "Green Onions", Booker T. said he thought that was the nastiest thing he could think of. That's the vibe the group was looking for in their recording, one nasty funk groove.
21. This song became the first single to sell over one million copies at Apple's iTunes online music store. Can you name it?

Answer: "Hey Ya" by OutKast

All of these songs were top sellers the year iTunes became popular, but "Hey Ya" outsold all of them to be the first million seller. Andre 3000, one half of the OutKast duo, performed nearly all instruments in the recording of this song. Which one did he not play? The bass, that was left to Aaron Mills of the popular 1980s act Cameo.
22. The song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" by Joy Division was written as a tongue in cheek rebuttal to a popular love song by which musical act?

Answer: Captain and Tennille

When songwriter and front man Ian Curtis was involved in a failing relationship, he wrote the song "Love Will Tear Us Apart" as a response to the more uplifting "Love Will Keep Us Together" by Captain and Tennille. Unfortunately, Ian Curtis never saw the success this song garnered, he committed suicide before the song's release.
23. A great tune has once again been placed out of date. Can you identify which month Big Star sang about their "gurls"?

Answer: September

The song "September Gurls" has been revitalized as a song on the soundtrack to the hit TV show "That 70s Show".
24. "Free Fallin'" is a great Tom Petty classic instantly recognized by any listener of rock music. His songwriting ability is typically solo, but not in the case of this tune. Another writer contributed from another act. Which one?

Answer: E.L.O.

Jeff Lynne was listed as a contributing artist to this track. Many Los Angeles areas are mentioned in the tune. Funny since Tom Petty is from Florida.
25. Which song was the B-side to The Beach Boys' "I Get Around"?

Answer: Don't Worry Baby

Brian Wilson certainly loved reciprocating to other artist's music and "Don't Worry Baby" was no exception. He purely used this as an answer to the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" from The Ronnettes.
