Santa Baby Trivia Quiz

I've been giving my Christmas songs playlist a workout over the last few days and "Santa Baby" has popped up a number of times, so I've been inspired to write a quiz about this tongue-in-cheek adult Christmas list.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What kind of fur does the singer want Santa to bring her?

Answer: Sable

"Santa baby, slip a sable under the tree for me..." Perhaps not a terribly politically correct Christmas present in this day and age, but very expensive - the singer obviously begins her Christmas list as she means to go on! Sable fur is so expensive that these days it is most commonly used as trim on items, rather than constructing complete garments from it.
2. What colour convertible would the singer like?

Answer: Light blue

"... a '54 convertible too, light blue ..." Other versions of the song use "out-of-space convertible" as part of this line.
3. In the song's first bridge, which one of the following does the singer lament as something she's missed?

Answer: All the fellas that she hasn't kissed.

"Think of all the fun I've missed, think of all the fellas that I haven't kissed..." The song "Santa Baby" was written by Joan Javits, Philip Springer and Tony Springer and was originally recorded in 1953.
4. What does the singer consider to be "not a lot" to ask for?

Answer: A yacht

"I want a yacht, really that's not a lot..." A sequel to the song, titled "This Year's Santa Baby" was released in 1954, but was not a chart success.
5. Throughout the song, how does the singer indicate to Santa that she's worthy of all the gifts on her Christmas wish list?

Answer: All of these.

The "awful good girl" line comes after asking for the sable and she informs Santa that she's "been an angel all year" after requesting a yacht. She promises Santa that she'll wait up for him if he brings her that light blue convertible she's asked for. I'd wait up for Santa, too, if I thought he was going to bring me a car! ;)
6. To what does the singer feel that she needs the deed?

Answer: A platinum mine

"There's something I really do need, the deed to a platinum mine..." Throughout the song, the singer asks Santa to "hurry down the chimney tonight" and I suppose that a rolled-up piece of paper would be a lot easier to carry than some of the other items on the list! Joan Javits, one of the song's cowriters, is the niece of former US Senator Jacob J. Javits.
7. After asking Santa to fill her stocking "with a duplex and checks", what does she exhort him to do?

Answer: Sign his "X" on the line.

"Fill my stocking with a duplex and checks, sign your 'X' on the line..." The song "Santa Baby" was featured in the movie "Driving Miss Daisy". This brought the song to prominence again more than 35 years after its original release.
8. The singer would like Santa to trim her Christmas tree with decorations bought from which store?

Answer: Tiffany's

"Come and trim my Christmas tree with some decorations bought at Tiffany's..." A made-for-TV movie titled "Santa Baby", starring Jenny McCarthy, Ivan Sergei and George Wendt was aired in the US in 2006. It tells the story of Santa's daughter taking over her father's "business".
9. What's the "one little thing" that the singer almost forgot to ask for?

Answer: A ring

"Forgot to mention one little thing - a ring, and I don't mean on the phone..." Miss Piggy did a version of "Santa Baby" in "It's a Very Merry Muppet Christmas Movie". The song has also been featured in an episode of the TV show "Ally McBeal".
10. Which of the following artists has recorded a version of "Santa Baby"?

Answer: All of these.

Eartha Kitt recorded the original version of the song in 1953. Other artists to have recorded a version of the song include Madonna and Taylor Swift. It is generally believed that Marilyn Monroe also recorded a version of the song, but there is some doubt as to whether the recording attributed to her is actually her voice.

I hope you've had fun (and go away humming!) - thanks for playing!
