Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1980s song describes an apocalyptic scenario caused by balloons being mistaken for a threat. How many balloons caused the chaos?

Answer: 99

'99 Luftballons' was released in 1983 by German band, Nena. Although the original German version had commercial success, an English version, '99 Red Balloons', was released. The English is not a direct translation and there has been criticism that something of the original has been lost in tranlation.
The original German version doesn't specify the colour of the balloons - the word red was used to replace the luft- in the original. A luftballon is a coloured toy balloon.
2. 'The sky was all purple, there were people running everywhere, Tryin' to run from the destruction, you know I didn't even care' Prince's reaction to the end of the world was to 'party like it's ___'?

Answer: 1999

'1999' was the title track of Prince's album '1999'. Despite its end of the world theme, the song had commercial success and the album, the fifth studio album from Prince, is considered to be his breakthrough album and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
3. Kate Bush released a single in 1980 which tells the story of a nuclear blast and fallout from the point of view of an unborn child who is aware of what is going on in the outside world. What is the name of this single?

Answer: Breathing

'Breathing' appeared on the 1980 album 'Never For Ever'. This album made Kate Bush the first female artist to ever enter the UK album charts at Number 1 with a solo album. 'Babooshka' and 'Army Dreamers' also featured on this album, with the former being the most successful single taken from 'Never For Ever'.
4. 'The ice age is coming, the sun's zooming in Engines stop running, the wheat is growing thin A nuclear error, but I have no fear Cause ___ is drowning and I, I live by the river' According to The Clash, which city was drowning?

Answer: London

The song 'London Calling' was taken from the album of the same name. It was the third studio album from The Clash. The song is a social commentary dealing with drugs, violence and the threat of a nuclear accident - the line 'a nuclear error' is said to be a reference to the accident at Three Mile Island in 1979, which resulted in a partial core meltdown.
The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
5. 'That's great, it starts with an earthquake' is the opening line to R.E.M.'s song 'It's the End of the World as We Know It (___ _ ___ ___)'. What four words complete the title?

Answer: and I feel fine

'It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I feel fine)' appeared on the 1987 album 'Document'. Despite the title of the song, there is no definitive cause for, or reference to, the actual end of the world in the lyrics - the 'as we know it' would probably explain this.
The song has appeared in numerous television shows and movies, including 'Family Guy', 'The Simpsons', 'Independence Day' and 'Chicken Little'.
TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) has become an acronym used by survivalists and is pronounced 'tee-oh-twaw-kee'.
6. 'There was thunder there was lightning then the stars went out and the moon fell from the sky it rained mackerel it rained trout and the great day of wrath has come and here's mud in your big red eye the poker's in the fire and the locusts take the sky and the ___ ___ ___ while I lay dreaming of you' What is the title (the missing words) of this Tom Waits song?

Answer: Earth Died Screaming

This song appeared on Tom Waits' album 'Bone Machine' which was released in 1992. The title of the song was inspired by a 1965 science fiction movie called 'The Earth Dies Screaming'. The film tracks 6 survivors of an apparent gas attack which is in fact an attack by aliens and the survivors must battle for survival.
This movie also inspired a 1983 video game from Atari, which involved the player fending off an alien invasion while in orbit above Earth.
UB40, an English reggae band, had a UK Top 10 hit song titled 'Earth Dies Screaming' but its subject matter was a nuclear holocaust.
7. 'Two Suns in the Sunset' is a song about the ending of the world in a nuclear holocaust. It appears on the 1983 album 'The Final Cut', by which band?

Answer: Pink Floyd

The song was written by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, as is every song on the album - the only Pink Floyd album where this is the case. The entire album was a concept album and was planned to be the soundtrack to the band's film 'The Wall'.
One of the major themes is that of war, and the theme of the song - nuclear disaster - is one that Waters continued to explore in his later solo albums. Although it is a Pink Floyd album, other members of the band have expressed dissatisfaction with it.
It is heavily critical of the then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, and she is referred to (as 'Maggie') several times on the album.
8. 'Armageddon Days Are Here (Again)' is a song dealing with war and religion, sung by which band?

Answer: The The

This song appeared on the album 'Mind Bomb'. Matt Johnson is the driving force behind The The, acting as front-man as well as songwriter, with all other band members changing over the years.
'Mind Bomb' deals with war, religion, politics and romance and was the fourth studio album release by the band. Sinead O'Connor appeared as a guest vocalist on one of the album tracks, 'Kingdom of Rain'.
9. Smashing Pumpkins touched on the end of the world with a track that featured on their 2007 album Zeitgeist. What is the title of this song?

Answer: Doomsday Clock

This song was featured on the soundtrack for 'Transformers', and although it was not a single it did make a chart position in both the US Billboard Hot 100 and the US Billboard Pop 100 through sales of digital downloads alone.
'Zeitgeist' was the seventh studio album from Smashing Pumpkins but was the first release following their reforming in 2005.
10. Which Johnny Cash song, the title track for his 2002 album, used biblical references when talking about the end of the world?

Answer: The Man Comes Around

'American IV: The Man Comes Around' was released in 2002. 'The Man Comes Around' is one of only three songs by Johnny Cash - the rest of the tracks are cover versions of other artists' songs.
The song deals with the end of the world in a biblical apocalypse, with the title being a reference to Jesus' second coming.
'And I looked and behold, a pale horse, And his name that sat on him was Death,
And Hell followed with him.' is used in the closing of the song and is taken from the Book of Revelation.
