Cousins, Hooper, and Chesterman were in the origianl band called "Strawberry Hill Boys". In 1968 they changed the name to the Strawbs for the 1968 album "All Our Own Work" (with Sandy Denny), but this was not released till 1973. The first released album by the same three in 1969 included "The Man Who Called Himself Jesus", which came out as a single, but was banned by the BBC.
2. What is the missing word? "There's a light in the distance It is easy to see They're burning a ____ by day and by night" ("Burning for Me")

Answer: Candle

"Lantern" and "Beacon" are what is burning in verses one and two on this track by Dave Cousins and John Mealing. Dave Cousins got a degree in statistics at Leicester University and has worked in radio broadcasting.
3. Which of these was NOT written by Richard Hudson?

Answer: All the Little Ladies

"All the Little Ladies" was written by Cousins/Hooper. Rik Hudson and John Ford both came from "Velvet Opera" in May 1970 and stayed for three years with the Strawbs, when the duo went off on their own for four albums, then Terry Cassidy joined then for two albums with The Monks, followed by another album under a new name - High Society and totally different style. Hudson and Ford rejoined the Strawbs in 1983; Ford went to New York to pursue a solo career in 1985.
4. In what song do you find these lyrics? "The French boat, at the ready, stands at anchor on the swollen tide"

Answer: The Soldiers' Tale

This is from "Deep Cuts" (1976) and written by Cousins/Cronk. Chas Cronk joind for the "Hero and Heroine" album and left in 1980, when the band broke up for three years. He wrote a number of songs with Cousins during this time.
5. Which album cover had a picture of a man drowning in a telephone box?

Answer: Deadlines

The cover design by was by HIPGNOSIS, and was meant as a pun on the title, as was the inner picture of a struggling newspaper editor on on the phone with two assistants.
6. Who wrote the music for "The Life Auction - part i: Impressions of Southall from the Train"?

Answer: Hawken/Cousins

The words were by Cousins. "Part ii: The Auction" was written by Cousins/Lambert. John Hawken backed Chuck Berry on his first UK tour, and is a member of Renaissance Illusion.
7. On "The Dragonfly", who played drums on "Vision of the Lady of the Lake"?

Answer: Bjarne Rostvold

This was the only track he ever played on. Bjarne was only brought in as a local drummer, and has an interest in Jazz. Rick Wakeman played the piano on that track. Hudson, Coombes, and Fernandez were all Strawbs drummers. Tony Fernandez has also played on Rick Wakeman albums.

Part of "A Mind of my Own" by Rod Coombes. Coombes was in Jeff Beck Band and Juicy Lucy before joining the Strawbs.

Written by Cousins. Dave Cousins, Brian Willoughby, and Dave Lambert play as the Acoustic Strawbs, which they created in 2000, with a higher acoustic content than the normal band.
