Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Jazz: Although most people associate this artist as a comedian and actor, he actually first gained public recognition as a jazz musician. One of his best known albums was released in 1968 and was titled "Bedazzled". Does anyone know this artist is?

Answer: Dudley Moore

I nearly mentioned that Moore had recorded "Moore" than "10" albums and that he also never contributed a song to the "Arthur" soundtrack, but I figured those hints would have been too obvious. It is a true statement though, that Dudley Moore was a gifted artist and musician and his legacy should be one of respect.

He, sadly, passed away in May of 2002 of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a brain disorder that is so far incurable. Moore was an activist in the fundraising necessary to discover a cure for the disease.
2. Rap: This cool bloke with the notorious eyepatch released such songs as "Children's Story" and "Behind Bars". Although he has had several run ins with the law, he still has the respect of his peers in the rap world.

Answer: Slick Rick

Many American rap fans are not that familiar with Slick Rick's music. The fact remains that Slick Rick (nee Ricky Walters) was a powerful force in the realm of hip hop for several years until legal battles overtook his career. I still say that his presentation is some of the smoothest in all of hip-hop.
3. Jazz/Hip-Hop: This band had a huge US hit with their hit "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" between 1992 and 1994.

Answer: Us3

Everyone knows that most rap/hip-hop songs are based on a sample of another song. In this case, the song is "Cantaloupe Island", a great tune by one of the most talented musicians ever, Herbie Hancock. The song was an international hit and has even found itself into advertisements and sporting events.
4. Girl Groups: When I first saw this group in 1994, I thought the Spice Girls had improved their looks and had gained a little talent. However, the Spice Girls had done neither, and this girl group were hot on the scene. Which group had a number four hit in the US with the song "Never Ever"?

Answer: All Saints

All Saints were similar to the Spice Girls in that they had a group of really good looking ladies with some mild talent. The difference is that the All Saints were actually musicians and songwriters while the Spice Girls were simply there for eye candy. That and the fact that All Saints were a quartet and the Spice Girls were a quintet. Nobody really notices those subtle differences, however.
5. Punk: Simply said, this band revolutionized several genres of music, all at once, and never once even tried. One of my favorite songs was "Train in Vain (Stand By Me)"; it was released on an album that would certainly fit in with the city of topic with this quiz.

Answer: The Clash

Since this is a quiz based on London-based bands, The Clash's album "London Calling" would certainly fit with the topic. The song in question was once covered by Annie Lennox on her "Medusa" album. A very good interpretation if I've ever heard one.
6. Rock: Most folks would not associate this artist with London, England, but the fact remains that she was born there in September of 1958. She was once in the all-girl group The Runaways. The clue is that she is only one born in the UK.

Answer: Lita Ford

Yes, Lita Ford, known best as the hot blonde who dueted with Ozzy Osbourne on the song "Close My Eyes Forever", was born in the UK. In addition to her duet with Ozzy, she also had hits with "Kiss Me Deadly" and "Shot of Poison".
7. Heavy Metal: This band's original members included guys named Tony Parsons and Doug Sampson. They were formed by their bass player in 1976. Which band is it?

Answer: Iron Maiden

When Steve Harris founded Iron Maiden, he had Paul Di'Anno as their lead singer. When Bruce Dickinson was a member of Samson, he saw Iron Maiden and knew he could do a better job as lead singer. Eventually, he won his way and became the successor to Paul Di'Anno. Once the band relesed their album "Number of the Beast", they knew their choice to enlist Dickinson was the right one as the album became an international bestseller.
8. Psychedelic Rock: The Seattle, Washington band Nirvana was not the first to use that name. Surprisingly enough, there was a Nirvana that was formed in 1967 in London and they were mildly noticed among followers of the psychedelic era. When the grunge Nirvana were hit with a lawsuit over their name, the two Nirvanas came together amicably. The elder Nirvana even recorded a tune by the younger Nirvana for an album of previously unreleased material. What was the song?

Answer: Lithium

It's interesting how a band can gain notoriety by another band using their name, even when the second band had never even heard of the prior group. However, the Nirvana founded in the late 1960s in England were irked by Kurt Cobain and his mates calling themselves by the same name.

They eventually filed suit, but were dismissed by the courts. The older band did release an album in 1996 titled "Orange and Blue" which had a version of the grunge group's hit song titled "Lithium". Very interesting events, indeed.
9. Prog-Rock: Believe it or not, this band has had songs with some strange titles. They include: "Jugband Blues", "Matilda Mother" and "Get Your Filthy Hands Off My Desert".

Answer: Pink Floyd

No quiz on London groups would be complete without the greatest band from the area, Pink Floyd. For the record, the songs in the question were from the following album (in order): "A Saucerful of Secrets", "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" and "The Final Cut". The first two songs were written by Syd Barrett, the final was written by Roger Waters.
10. Rock: This band formed in 1963. They waited 31 years to receive their first Grammy awards. They won a Short Form Video award for the song "Love is Strong". They also won another award that night. Which band is it?

Answer: Rolling Stones

For their big award of the night, the Rolling Stones picked up the Grammy for the Best Rock Album with their "Voodoo Lounge" release. In my opinion, the album was fair, maybe even decent, but no where worthy of a Grammy. The issue here is timimg; the band had not released an album in five years. Any release was certain of attention.

They certainly received attention with their Grammy nod.
