Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Outlaws were from what US city/state?

Answer: Tampa, Florida

"The Outlaws, down in Tampa town, yes, a mighty fine place to be. Well, they got green grass and they got high tides and that sure looks good to me!" from "Gator Country" by Molly Hatchet! Jacksonville, Florida is the hometown of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Molly Hatchet.
2. The original members of The Outlaws were

Answer: Herbie Pino, Frank Guidry, Hughie Thomasson, David Dix

In the late 60's, The Outlaws were a local Tampa rock band! Drummer David Dix quit and Monte Yoho replaced him. Then the band broke up, and Huey went to NYC to work as a folk singer. When he returned to Tampa, he got permission from the other ex-members to form a band using The Outlaws' name. That band, comprised of Huey, Billy Jones, Frank O'Keefe, Monte Yoho, and Henry Paul, signed with Arista in 1974. Dix, Arnold, and Salem were members at various times. Brown, Hlubek, Crump, Roland, Thomas, and Holland formed the original Molly Hatchet membership.
3. "Waterhole", "Knoxville Girl", "There Goes Another Love Song", "Green Grass and High Tides Forever": on what album did these songs originally appear?

Answer: "The Outlaws"

"Anytime" was the 1981 Atlantic Records release by the Henry Paul Band. Hustlers, Inc. was the publishing company for all of the songs that appear on the 1975 debut album!
4. The inside cover photo of The Outlaws' second album, "Lady In Waiting", is a rustic porch shot reminiscent of Crosby, Stills, and Nash's first album, including a shadowy figure in a window that is credited as a percussionist. Who is that CSNY/Stills' sideman lurking on the inside looking out?

Answer: Joe Lala

On CSN's first album, it was drummer Dallas Taylor standing in the window. David Dix re-joined The Outlaws as a second drummer during the tour that became "Bring It Back Alive" (1978). Joe Vitale is another CSNY drummer who also worked with Joe Walsh.
5. What was the name of Henry Paul's band prior to his joining The Outlaws?

Answer: Sienna

The country rock band Sienna members were future Outlaws Henry Paul and Monte Yoho, future Henry Paul Band alumnus Jim Fish, plus Sean Emmitt and Ray Gerber. Henry quit The Outlaws to form the Henry Paul Band in 1977 and formed the country music award winning band BlackHawk in 1990.
6. The Outlaws have been one of the hardest touring bands in rock and roll history. Because of the relentless road trips, along with the high-energy shows and recording responsibilities, the turnover of musicians has been heavy. Who replaced bassist Frank O'Keefe when he decided he'd had enough of the road?

Answer: Harvey Dalton Arnold

Harvey came on board in 1977, during the "Bring It Back Alive" tour, and remained with the band for 3 albums, leaving the bass spot to Rick Cua in 1980. Riff West was a bass player with Molly Hatchet, and John Demaio is the co-founder (with his brother Mike, Hyon Hon, and myself), long-time bassist, and keeper-of-the-flame for the New Jersey-based southern rock tribute band Whiskey!
7. Who wrote The Outlaws' FM radio hit "(Ghost)Riders In The Sky"?

Answer: Stan Jones

The country-western standard was written in 1949. Singer/songwriter Rodney Crowell is an award-winning Nashville star and wrote the Tim McGraw hit "Remember Me".
8. What band was Freddie Salem with prior to joining The Outlaws?

Answer: The Chambers Brothers

The 1960's one-hit wonders: "Time Has Come Today"! The Wildcats ["Cat Dance"(1982)] was Freddie's project after leaving The Outlaws.
9. Who did Freddie Salem replace with The Outlaws?

Answer: Henry Paul

Henry didn't quit because of excessive touring, though! He left to front The Henry Paul Band.
10. Who wrote "Freeborn Man"?

Answer: Mark Lindsey and Keith Allison

Mark Lindsey and Keith Allison were members of the 60's pop-rock band Paul Revere and the Raiders. Danny Chauncey wrote "I Want To Go Back", a top ten hit for Eddie Money, and replaced Don Barnes as lead guitarist in .38 Special for a short time.
11. Who wrote and sang lead vocals on "Green Grass And High Tides Forever"?

Answer: Hughie Thomasson

The classic live version with 3 lead guitars and 2 drummers runs 20 minutes 20 seconds on "Bring It Back Alive"; it saved the bladders and bowels of many a DJ! In this writer's humble opinion, it's the greatest guitar song ever written!
12. Who wrote and sang lead vocals on "Ain't So Bad"?

Answer: Billy Jones

From the 1976 album "Lady In Waiting", the song contains the ironic lyric: "Well, I've waited so long, trying to put it in song, whether rise or fall ... livin' ain't so bad after all!" Billy Jones, for reasons only he knew, was too young at 45 when he took his own life in February 1995.
13. Who wrote and sang lead vocals on "White Horses"?

Answer: Freddie Salem

From the album "Ghost Riders" [1980]: Freddie Salem came to The Outlaws from the Chambers Brothers in 1977 as Henry Paul's replacement, adding a heavier rock sound to the three guitar lineup as well as his considerable song writing and producing abilities and unique vocal style. Freddie was the producer for Barbra Streisand's soundtrack album "The Way We Were" [1974] and Natalie Cole's 1999 release "The Magic Of Christmas", among others.
14. Who is the keyboardist pictured as a member of the band on the album sleeve for "Ghost Riders", even though he is not credited as a member but rather as on "loan" from Epic Records?

Answer: Mike Duke

Mike Duke was a member of Wet Willie ["Street Corner Serenade"], wrote the hit "Doin' It All For My Baby" for Huey Lewis and the News, and has toured with the great Delbart McClinton ["Givin' It Up For Your Love"]! The legendary Al Kooper was [among other major and minor contributions and accomplishments] the founder of Blood, Sweat, and Tears and "mentor" and producer for Lynyrd Skynyrd in their early recording years! Ken Hensley is the former keyboardist of Uriah Heep and Blackfoot, and Dean Daughtry is the keyboard wizard for the Atlantic Rhythm Section!
15. Hughie Thomasson disbanded The Outlaws in 1997 to join what band?

Answer: Lynyrd Skynyrd

BlackHawk is Henry Paul's country-rock band. Blackfoot was Rickey Medlocke's legendary-but-faltering group that he disbanded to join Lynyrd Skynyrd. Big Southern is my New Jersey-based southern rock tribute band. After Hughie assembled a new lineup, The Outlaws released the live album "Hittin' The Road" in 1993 and "Diablo Canyon" in 1994 on the indie label Blues Bureau. Without a major label deal, Hughie accepted the offer to replace Ed King as the strat lead guitarist with Lynyrd Skynyrd! However, according to Hughie, "The Outlaws will ride again!"
