Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'The Shadows' were formed in 1958 when the group members were Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Jet Harris and which drummer?

Answer: Tony Meehan

Brian Bennett was Tony Meehan's replacement when Meehan and Harris left the group. Keith Moon was 'The Who's' infamous drummer and Pete Best was the original drummer for 'The Beatles'.
2. Jet was not bassist Harris's real name, but which of the following was?

Answer: Terence

Jet was born in London in 1939 and left the group in 1962. He claims to be responsible for naming them 'The Shadows'. Sadly, he was not invited to rejoin the group for their 50th anniversary reunion when they played with Cliff Richard at the Royal Variety Performance in 2008, or for the subsequent tour.
3. The Shadows were originally known by a different name, but had to change it due to an American group having the same name. What was it?

Answer: Drifters

The American Drifters are well known in the UK, having featured great singers such as Clyde McPhatter and Ben E. King. The Shadows are better known for instrumentals than for their singing abilities.
4. The Shadows hit number one in the UK charts in 1960 with which of the following?

Answer: Apache

This was their first UK number one, and had a driving beat reminiscent of the Indian 'wardances' as frequently seen in film and television 'Westerns' which were very popular at the time. It could have been called any of the options, since it had no lyrics to reflect the name.
5. The Shadows hit number one again in 1961 with a tune named after the craft of which of the following seafarers?

Answer: Thor Heyerdahl

This was 'Kon-Tiki', named after Thor Heyerdahl's famous raft, which he sailed across the Pacific to Polynesia. Drake's most famous ship was 'The Golden Hind' and Nelson's was 'HMS Victory'. Cousteau's research ship was called 'Calypso'.
6. Jet Harris and the drummer left the group in 1962 and had a number one hit in 1963 as a duo with which of the following?

Answer: Diamonds

They followed this up with 'Scarlett O'Hara', which reached number 2 and 'Applejack' which made number 4. All these hits were in 1963. Jet's personal problems meant that they did not have any further success as a duo. Tony Meehan died in 2005, at the age of only 62, following a fall.
7. Between March 1962 and March 1963, The Shadows had three more number one hits. Which of the following failed to reach the number one spot?

Answer: Guitar Tango

Guitar Tango made only number 4 in August 1962. 'Wonderful Land', with an orchestral backing, was number one in March 1962, 'Dance On' in December 1962 and 'Foot Tapper', which was to be their last number one hit, reached this position in March 1963.
8. Bruce Welch was engaged for a while to which of the following singers?

Answer: Olivia Newton-John

All these were well established singers in the UK, but it was Olivia who had the strongest connection with Cliff Richard and his backing group and who was romantically involved with Bruce in 1968. Unfortunately, he was still married to someone else at the time.
9. Following the break-up of the group, Hank Marvin and Bruce Welch went on to form a singing group with which man?

Answer: John Farrar

Farnham & Rowles were solo singers and Sebastian is from the 'Lovin' Spoonful'. Farrar came from Australia, where he worked closely with Olivia Newton-John (yes, her again). Marvin, Welch and Farrar released two albums in 1972 and 1973, but had no hit singles. John Farrar wrote the songs 'Hopelessly Devoted to You' and 'You're the One That I Want' for the film version of 'Grease'.
10. The Shadows returned to the charts in 1978, reaching number 5 with an instrumental version of which song from a musical?

Answer: Don't Cry For Me Argentina

From 'Evita', of course. The other choices are all from musicals, 'Carousel', 'Chess' and 'Cats'. They followed this hit with 'The Theme From the Deerhunter (Cavatina)' which reached number 9 in 1979 and a few more minor hits before disappearing from the charts again. As already mentioned, the group has reformed for their 50th anniversary tour. Hank, Bruce and Brian Bennett are all part of this group, with Mark Griffiths on bass.
